To all whom it lmay concern. v
Be it known that l, FRANKLIN A. FLncK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fans; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of vthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. j
This invention relates to improvements in fans and has for one object to provide a simply constructed yet very eficient device of this character which can be very inexpensively manufactured.
A further object-is to provide a novel means for mounting the fan blades upon the fan shaft.
With the above general objects in view, my invention resides in certain novel features of construction which will be hereinafter more particularly set forth in the fol- Fig. 6 is a similar view showing the sleeve used for securing the free side edges of the fan blades;

Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of the inner end of one of the fan blades showin more particularly the construction thereo In the preferred form, my invention comprises a fan 1 which is rotatably mounted within a suitable casing 2 provided with a removable cover 3 in which is formed one or more inlet openings 4 of any preferred formation. The openings are here shown as two in number and of substantially oval shape; The fan is fixed to a shaft 5 which passes through the casing and its cover and is mounted 1n suitable bearings 6 supported by a bracket 7, which shaft carries the tight and loose pulleys 8 and 9. y rThe end of the shaft 5 which projects through the cover 3 is rotatably mounted in the bearing 10 carried by said cover.
rThe fan l is constructed of a flat plate 11 preferably circular in shape, to which a cone 12 is secured. Both the cone and the plate are centrally apertured for the reception of the shaft 5, the cone 12 being fixed thereto preferablyv by means of a set screw 13 which is carried by a sleeve 14 formed within the hollow portion of the cone. rThe cone 12 is provided with a iiange 15 by which the plate 11 is secured thereto, and with outstanding lips 16 which are arranged at predetermined intervals around said cone. The cone with its iange and its lips 16 is preferably cast in one piece. Fan blades 17 have their inner ends inclined to iit the inclined face of the cone and are secured to the lips 16 by suitable-fastenings. The rear upright edges of the blades 17 are attached to the plate 11 by means of the angle iron braces 18 secured thereto. This arrangement securely attaches the fan blades to the cone and tothe plate.
rThe front edges, however, are free except adjacent the shaft 5 where they are securely held by the sleeve 19. rThe construction of this sleeve .19 is clearly shown in Fig. 6, the inner face thereof being slotted as shown Y at 20 to receive said fan blades, the outer portion thereof having a set screw 21 therein by which said sleeve is secured to the shaft 5.

As shown in Fig. 7, the cone 12 may be used in constructing what is known as a double fan, the casing surrounding which is provided with inlet openings on both its front and rear'sides. In a double fan, but a single plate 11 is used with fan blades 17 on each side thereof, the inner ends of said blades being secured tov cones 12 similar in construction to the cone 12. In this case, however, the fastenings used to, secure the cones to the plate pass through the flanges on both cones 12" and through the plate. The sleeves 19 which are used on the free side edges of each set of fan blades are similar in all respects to the sleeve 19. In fact, the method of mounting the blades to the plate or the cones is similar in all respects in both the preferred and modified forms of the invention; therefore further description is unnecessar From the foregoing, it is evident that I have produced a light fan which will readily accomplish all the objects for which it is designed, the cone being of such a shape and disposed in such relation to the other parts of the fan as to securely hold the blades irrespective of the speed of the fan. Particular emphasis must also be laid on the peculiar construction and disposition of the fan blades as the pockets formed between them and the plates greatly assist in sucking dust laden air into the casing.
I claim:
l. In a device of the class described comprising a fan casing, a shaft rotatably mounted therein, a plate surrounding said shaft and fixed thereon, fan blades secured to said plate, a sleeve surrounding said shaft,
said sleeve being slotted on one face to receive the edges of the fan blades, and means for fixing said sleeve to the shaft.
In a device of the class described comprlslng aA fan caslng, a shaft rotatably mounted thereln, a plate surrounding said shaft, a hollow cone secured thereto and fixed to said shaft, fan blades secured to said plate and said cone andhaving shoulders extending downwardly beyond the edge of said cone, and a sleeve on said shaft slotted to receive said shoulders and means for fixing said sleeve to the shaft.
3. In a device of the class described comprising a fan casing, a' shaft rotatably mounted therein, a hollow cone on said shaft having a sleeve extending from one end into said hollow portion, and means thereon whereby said cone is secured to the shaft, said cone having lips thereon, a circular plate secured on the opposite end of the cone, fan blades secured to said lips and said plate, each blade bent at an angle to the plate and laterally above its adjacent lip and then upwardly to form ockets for said plate, each blade extending eyond the end of said cone and having a shoulder projecting downwardly over the end of said cone, a sleeve slotted in one face to receive said shoulders and-contacting withthe said cone, and means on the sleeve for fastening i the same to the shaft.
