FAN-BLoWEn.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. PRrroH- 1g ments in fan blowers, designed especially for use in impelling air currents for' sanitation and ventilation in mines, restaurants, hotels, theaters, and other public or similar places The primary object of the invention is to improve the construction of the fan blower in several (particulars to render it more eflicient in enlarging the volume of airv currents impelled therefrom, without the expenditure of added power and without additional cost which will affect the operation of the fan to any appreciable extent.
Thel invention v consists incertain novel combinations land arrangements of parts as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying 'drawings I have illustrated 'one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention VVconstructed 4according to the Abest mode I have so far devised for-the practical application of the principles of my invention, andthis embodiment has proven highly eiicient and satisfactory in actual service.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the fan blower, showing its bearings, but omitting its housing for convenience of illustration. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the bloweror impeller, on line. 1'-1 Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view of the impeller or blower, the bearings being omitted. Fig. 4 is a-detail view showing a collar on the blower shaft with the inner ends of the louvers attached thereto. Fig. 5 is a detail of a central brace for the fan blades. Fig. 6 is a diagrammatic view showing the fan blower in itsl housing.
The'blower is preferably located in a horizontal position for best results, and in this form the invention is illustrated with ai central shaft 1 supported in its bearings 2, 3, and the shaft `is revoluble in the journal bearings.
There are nine blades designated by the numeral 4 arranged to extend longitudinally of the shaft with their`inner ends or edges 1 on the periphery of the shaft and Specification of Letters Patent.

tangential thereto with :the edge of each suc-l ceeding blade overlapping the preceding one pocket at the inner or shaft end of the blade. As best seen in Fig. 1 the blades are of tapered formation,
l z. e. they are longer at I thelr inner ends than at their outer ends,
and at their sides the edges are curled as at 5, 5. The maximum depth of this curlorcurve to the sides of the bladesis aty thek outer end, and the curl or curve diminishes as the blade approaches the shaft so that the extreme inner edge of each blade lies flat upon the shaft as described.
The blades are' supported between two side rings 6 and 7 by means of two sets of cross bars 8 and 9 which have their bent ends fastened as by edges of the blades as at 10 and to the rings 6 and 7 as at 11 respectively. Thus thefront brace bar 8 holds the curled side edges while the rear brace b ar supports the blade between the two rings 6 and 7 and is itself supported between and braces thetwo rings.
A central tangentially slotted disk or collar 12 1s fastened on the shaft to brace the blades byangles 12.
The rings 6 and 7 are rigidly held and supported from the shaft by means of two series of louvers 13 and 14:, which are rivv eted at the inner sides of the respective rings 6 and 7, at their outer ends, and at their inner ends the louvers are riveted as. at 15 to a collar 16 at one end of the blower, and end of the blower. The louvers are each located at the side of the curled edge of a blade, and it will be seen that they are fashionedV as pockets or cups with outwardly flaring walls approximately. parallel with the taperedk rivets to the curled side curled edge of the sides of the blades. These pockets are not closed however, but the flaring louver and the outer side of the curled.
blade edge, between them, form a space .through which the airis trapped and passed to the succeedingv blade as the fan blower revolves. In this manner the'air is scooped or caught by the flaring louvers at each end of the fan and guided around the outer side of the curled edges of the blades and caught b v the succeeding blade which impels the lair through the duct 18 of thehousing 19 in Figa. By' the utilization ofthe Haring .louvers and the curled edges of the blades a greater quantity vor volume of air is,
trapped, and the curled edges of the .sides of-'theblades prevent escapel of air at the sides'of" the fan and in this manner thecapacity of the blower is increased as the volurne of impelled air is increased. l
.' Wha;t I claim iszi In [agian blower the combination 'with a v shaft, of blades extending therefromha'ving curled side edges, spaced rings with sup orting connecting bars foi'l the blades and `race barsy connecting the cuirled edges of `esimh blade, a louver attached to a ringet the v curled edge of each 'blade for air n l cuirents to the succeeding blade, an the inner end of each louver connected with the 'In testimony whereof I ax my signan shaft.
