UNITED STATES PATENT oFFlcE.
ARTHUR R. WILFLEY, OF DENVER, COLOBADVO.
cmrrarruear. PUMP.
Application led April 6, 1922. Serial No. 549,969.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ARTHUR R. WIIJLEY, citizen of theUnited States, residing at the city and county of Denver, and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Centrifugal Pumps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention such as .will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying' drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in centrifugal pumps of the type disclosed and in Patent 1,346,924, granted to me on July 20, 1920.
It is the object of this invention to provide a certain improved and simplified construction which will enable -me to more easily manufacture the pump disclosed in the above referred to patent.
The improvement to which this invention is specifically directed is a simplification of the means employed in keeping the liquid from entering into the bearings when the pump is in operation.
In order to more clearly describe my invention, I shall have reference -to the accompanying drawing in which- Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my pump with parts thereof shown in vertical longitudinal section;
Fig. 2 is a Vdetail on an enlarged scale showing my improved arrangement o parts;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to that'shown in Fig. 2 but showing a modified form of my invention; and
Fi 4 is a sect-ion taken on line 4-4, Fig. 3 an .on line 5-5, Figi 2.
The same reference c aracters indicate the same parts in the several views.
Let the numeral 5 designate a stationary casing upon which is mounted an air chamber 6, which is connected with the main casing 7 in which the runner 8 is arranged. e runner 8 is connected as shown at 9, with one. extremity of the runner shaft 10,v this shaft extending through an opening 12 in the casing which is in communication with the sump chamber 13. Secured non-rotatably on shaft 10 is a member 14 which may be formed cone shaped as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This member is provided on one side fby with fan blades 15 which extend outwardly `fr om the shaft 10 in the mannerv shown in Fig. 4. The runner shaft extends through a cylindrical housing 16 within which a shaft bearing is located and has a pulley 17 secured to the outer end thereof. In order to prevent liquid and solid materials from entering into the interior 18 of housing 16, I provide a stationary1 member 19 which is secured to the end of casing 16 by means of screws 20. Member 19 has an inwardly extending fiange 21 which serves to hold lit steady and to form a tight joint and is provided centrally with a hole 22 through which shaft 10 extends. Hole 22.is made slightly larger than the shaft so as not to be in contact therewith at any time. A'channel 23 is provided in hole 22 and serves to catch any liquidvthat may enter between the sides of the hole and the shaft. This liquid is thrown off from the shaft by the centrlfugal action due to the rapid rotation thereof and is permitted to How through thehole 24. When the pump is -in operation the shaft 10 rotates at a high rate of speed and the centrifugal action of the fan blades 15 keeps liquid ing into the space between the rotating member 14 and the member 19. If any material or liquid should succeed vinreaching the shaft 10 and pass into the opening 22, it will be thrown off from the shaft by centrifugal action and be received in recess 23 where it will iow to the bottom and through hole 24 into the infiuence of fan blades 15,
which means it will be returned into active circulating stream which fiows through the pump.
Instead of making the member 14 conical in shape as shown in Figs. 1 and 2,1 may make 1t in the shape shown in Fi 3 where the member .14* is disk shaped an provided with fan blades 15. I have shown members 14 and 14" held in place by a set screw, but it is preferable to also employ splines to prevent rotation on the sha From the above it will appear that I have provided an exceedingly simple and effective means for preventing liquids and solid material from entering the chamber 18 when the pump is in operation. Having now described my invention, ,I claim as new is- 1. In combination, a rotatable shaft, a
what
and other material from enterchamber adapted to contain a. shaft bearing,
adapted to contain a liquid, means between said chambers for preventing the liquid from, iiowing from the second mentioned chamber to the first mentioned chamber, comprising a partition member rigidly secured to the end walls ofthe first mentioned chamber and provided with an opening adapted to receive the shaft, said opening being larger than the shaft, the walls of said opening provided with an annular recess and the partition member being provided with an opening extending from said recess to the outersurface of said member, and a member rigidly secured to said shaft and provided with a plurality of fan blades in the side nearest the partition member.
2. In combination, a rotatable shaft, a chamber adapted to contain a shaft bearing, a second chamber adjacent thereto and adapted to contain a liquid, means between said chambers for preventing the flow of liquid from the second to the first mentioned chamber while the shaft rotates, said means consisting of a partition member nonrotatably secured to the end walls of the rst mentioned chamber and provided with an opening adapted to receive the shaft having a greater diameter than the shaft, the wall of said opening being provided with an annular recess, saidimember being provided with a downwardly inclined opening connecting the recess with the outer surface thereof, and a disk like member 'secured to the shaft and rotatable therewith at a point adjacent the partition, said disk like member being provided with a plurality of fan blades on the side nearest the partition and adapted to be rotated in close proximity thereto, whereby any material that enters between the disk and the partition will be thrown outwardly by centrifugal force.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
