COMBINATION-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
I 'atontetl Mary 1, 1917.
Application filed December 27, 1916. Serial No. 139,180.
lie it known that I, JAMns M. lionlnrrs, citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Critteuden and State of l\'e11tue|\' v. have invented eertain new and useful 'l111proveme1its in (omhination-Loeks: and I do hereby deelare the following to he :1 full, clear. and exact: description of the. invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to'whieh it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention 'relates to :1"loel\' and has i For one of its ohjeets. the provision of a.
easing havmg :1 shaekle adapted to he e11- gaged and held by means loeated w1t'h1n the easing to prevent the haeltle from being" withdrawn from the easing or moved into an nnloelted position.
Another ohjeet ol'tthis invention is to provide :1 eo111l1i11ation 111ea11s loeated within the easing and adapted-to engage the ends of the sharkle and prevent the same tron: moving into :111 unloeked position until tl1ero1nhination has been properly n1a11ipulated. 1
further ohjeet of this invention is to provide :1 locking shal't'having lugs thereon, whieh are i'eeeivetl hetween Ul haped memhers having slots \\'l|lt'l1 are adapted to reeeive the lugs for permitting the shaft torotate for freeing the shaekle.
turther ohjeet ol'- this invention is to provide means eonneeted to the U-shaped me111hers and extending esteriorlv ol"the easing l'ormovingtheU-shaped111e111l1e1'sto ward and From the shaft for permitting the lugs to turn in the slots for l'reeing the shaft.
still I'nrther ohjeet of this invention is the provision ol' :1 eomhination ltit'lx' ol' the ahove stated eharaeter. Wilit'll shall he -si111- ple, durahleant l eilieient. and 'whieh may he 111:1nutaetured and sold at :1 eomparativelv low eost.

lor ta 'romplete understanding of n1 v inventi'on. ret'erenee is to he had to the following deseription 11nd aeemnpanving drawing. in'whieh:
Figure l is :1 front elevation of :1 eomhinationlorl: eo11str11etedin :u'roiwlanee with 111 1' invention,
Fig. 2 is :1 siinil 11' view part [v in section having the (over 1' lllOVCtl,

Fig. (5 is :1 detai perspective view of the shaeltle, 5
Fig. 7 is an edge elevation;illustrating means loeated upon the exterior of the cusing for operating the ro111l1ination ot' the loeh.
lte'l'erring in drail to the drawing, the numerai 1 indieatts :1 substantially reetangular easing having :1 removable (over 2 seeured thereon h v s rews I, or like fasteners. The top wall of the easing 1 is provided with openings 4 :1 ljaeent eaeh-end of the easing to reeeive the arm portions 5 and 6 of :1 slt|Ist:1l1ti2tl| l|-shaped shaeltle 7. The arm portion 5 of the sllaelile T has :1 redueed e vli11drieal iortion-H \Yhit'll is provided with :1 noteh and :1 lug it The arm portion ('1 of the sharhle T is provided with :1 redueed evlindrial portion 11 having :1 noteh l2. Formed 111 the end ol the reduced evlindrieal portion 11 is :1 flat extension 13v having oppositely disposed lugs 14.
The end walls ol the easing are provided with slots 15 for r reiving :1 lllth'ill{ shaft lti. whieh has notel es 1? and ls for111ed adjarent' eat-h end l'oi permitting the ends of the arm portions it the shaekle 'T' to pass under the lorlting :ha'l't l i. Formed upon one end of the lot-k 11g. shaft 16 is :1 knoh I!) 'l'or rotating the loe ting shaft i within the easing 1 and tort-:1 Hill" the notrhes 17 and Z71 tia|l v U-shaped munhers 22 are provided with oppos1tel v (imposed elongated slots 23. For111ed upon the lo clung shaft. to are pairs .of oppositely disposed lugs 24 which are bers 22 in the guides 21 for permitting the slots 23 to become so positioned that the ll-igs 24 may pass therein when the locking shaft 16 is turned .by the knob 19 thus freeing the shackle 7 from a locked position. The arm portion 6 of the shackle 7 is prevented from entirely withdrawing from the casing by the oppositely disposed lugs 14 engaging the underface of the top wall. The extension 13 formed upon the arm portion 6 of the shackle 7 adds a greater length to said' arm portion than the arm portion 5 and when the oppositely disposed lugs 14 engage the undertace of the top plate of the casing, the arm 5 will be free from the casing, permitting the shackle to be removed from a staple or .other device which itis locking. 7
The knobs 26 may have formed thereon indicators as illustrated in Fig. 7 adapted to cooperate withcombination figures located upon the bottom wall of the casing wherebyaperson when desiring to unlock the shackle 7 can tell by the indicating hand moving uponfthe graduations the number of times it is necessary 'to'rotate the operating rod 25 before the slots in the substantially U-shaped members are so positioned to permit the lugs24' to turn or extend therein,
From the foregoing description taken in.
'will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what -I claim is:
1. A lock comprising a casing, a'substant'iall y U-shaped shackle having itsends disposed within the casing and notched, a shaft ournaled in the casing and having notches for cooperating with the notches in the shackle to permit the shackle to slide freely within the casing, a knob formed on the shaft and exteriorly of the casing for rotating the shaft to move said shaft into the notches of the shackle to lock said shackle against withdrawal from the casing, means engagin the shaft to lock it against rotation, am means connected with the last mening notches for cooperating witl'rthe notches in the'shackle to permit the shackle to slide freely in the casing, means for rotating the shaft to more said shaft into the notches of the shackle to lock said shackle against withdrawal from the casing, oppositily disposed lugs formed on the shaft, substantially U-shaped members located within said casing and receiving. the shaft between its arm portions, said U-shaped members having elongated slots in the arm portions, means for moving the substantially U- shaped members to position the slots for receiving the lugs for permitting the shaft to be rotated.
3. A lock comprising a casing, a substantially U-shapcd shackle having its ends disposed within the casing and'notched, a shaft journaled inthe casing and having notches therein for cooperating with the notches in the shackle to permit the shackle to slide within the casing, means for rotating the shaft to more. said shaft into the notches of the shackle, guides formed within the casing, substantially U-shaped members slid able in the guides and receiving the locking shaft between their arm portions, said U- Y shaped members having elongated slots in the arm portions thereof, oppositely disosed lugs formed on the shaft and located between the arm portions of the suhstantiall y U-shaped'members, and operating rods journaled in the casing and threaded tothe substantially U-shaped members for-moving said U-shaped members to position the slots so as to permit the lugs to enter them for permitting the shaft to be rotated.
In testimon whereof I afiix my signature in presence 0 two witnesses.
