IMPROVEMENT IN FRUIT-CANS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,455, dated January 2, 1-872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES `GrRIMEs, of Portsmouth in the county of Scioto and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Fruit-Gan;

My invention has for its object to improve the means for preserving fruit in cans 5 and to this end it consists in the construction of the can and its cover, as I will now proceed to describe. 1

In the accompanying drawings, A is a sheetmetal can, of the ordinary construction, with 4the exception of the upper edge, which is left ot the usual thickness of the metal instead of being turned over or vprovided with a ilange. B is the cover, struck up from one pieceof sheet-metalwith al depressed center, forming a square snoulder, c, to lit within the can mouth in close contact with it's sides, an exterior groove or gutter, d, surrounding the top ofthe can opposite the shoulder C, and an exterior turnedup tlange, c, to strengthen the cover outside the shoulder, and form an additional bearing or supporting surface for the can when sealed.

The process of sealing the can is as follows: It is first completely lled with the fruit to be preserved and the cover applied, as shown in Fig. l, the shoulder c fitting tightly against the sides of the can, expanding them somewhat, and forming a close joint. The can is then reversed, as shown in Fig. 2, the whole weight of its contents resting upon the cover, while the edge ofthe can itself bears upon the metal outside the shoulder, as shown at f. If there is any defect in the body ofthe can which 'will canse it to leak, the liquid will ooze ont into the gutter d, and the defect be thereby detected. lt'the can is found to be tight the glitter is filled with wax or other sealing material g, and the process is completed.

By constructing the cover B with the square shoulder c itiits tightly within the can, expanding its sides somewhat, and forming a close joint before the sea-ling material is applied. The exterior iange e strengthens the gutter and prevents the metal thereof from being' bent inward or downward to displace the sealing material.
