Improvement in Fruit Cans.

1mm Z0229 UNITED STATES PATENT 'OEEIoE.
WILLIAM POLYBLANK AND GEORGE POLYBLANK, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT lN FRUIT-CANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,156, dated February 27, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM POLYBLANK and GEORGE POLYBLANK, both of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in the Construction of Tin Cans and Covers for Preserving Fruit and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the construction and uses of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of can and cover complete. Fig.2 is a section of the body of can and cover, showing howit fits by wedging tight in its place. Fig. 3 is a section of the cover, showing the pitch atA, canal B, angleedge 0. A depression is made in the pit-ch A for lifting the cover.
Our improvements relate to the construction of tin preserving-cans with open mouths and tight-fitting covers, which are made airtight by sealing-wax or other suitable material.
The open-mouth can gives greater facility for filling and cleaning than cans made with use; and our 'cover is so constructed for holding wax, and fitted to the body of the can so tightly, that sealin gits contents is accomplished without the usual objection of holding the cover down, as in cans with loose-fitting covers.
It is well known that in sealing cans with loose covers the application of heat will raise the cover out of its true place, thus making it difficult to obtain an air-tight joint. Our cover, Fig. 3, letter O, has an edge beveled at an angle corresponding to the bevel on the upper edge of the can, Fig. 2, letter E, forming a wedge-shaped mouth. Thus the cover may be pressed or even hammered as tight as desired. The cover is pressed by means of suitable dies, and is in one'piece. The bevel on the can is swaged by suitable rollers fitted to a tinners machine. 1
Vv'ha-t we claim as our improvements, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is
The flanged cover A B O, in combination with the flaring edge E of the can, substan tially as shown and described.
