Description

NHED STATES PATENT @FHCE ALEXANDER WARNER, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
'METAL CAN, &c.
BPECIEICAI'ION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 337,539. date March 9. 1886.
Serial N0. 175,432. (N0 modul.)
T0 all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that I ALEXANDER VARNER, of the ciby of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented. a. new and useful Irnprovemenb in Metal Gans, Pails, and other Ooverecl Receptacles, 0f which the fol- 1owing is a, speoification. v
Myinvention rolates to cans pails, and other such receptacles as are used for containing meats and obher articles of food, lard, butter, &c., and whioh are made of bin or other sheet metal, and provided with covers which are slipped downward upon them. When such pails are used for packing 1ard and other substances which ib is desired to preserve from atmospheric influences, o1 which consist of or contain liquid whioh would be liable to leak 01113 in oase the pails or cuns becorne tilted or inverted in transportation, it 1's common to solderthe slip-covers in place 011 the bodies of bhe pails and eans. 'Ihis method 0f seouring the cover, wh1'1e it; effectually closes the pail or can, is obj eotionable, because of the difficulty of removing the oover, and because in removing the oover by the rude implements usually ab band the body 01 cover, or both, are liableto become so bent or distorted thafi they cannob be reused in the original way, and are ofcen so cub and defaced as to be afterward useless for any purpose.
'lhe objeob of my invention is to constri1ct covers of Ehe kind described so that they may be very tightly secured upon the bodies of t;he pai1s 01 cans by simply pressing them down thereon, thereby prodncing a mebal-to-metpal j oinb, and so that the oovers may be readily removed wihout defacing or injuringin any way t;he bodies or covers, and leaving them fit for further use.
The invention consists, essentially, in the combination, with a meta1 pail 01 can body, of a cover having a double rimwhichis presenbed downward, and forms a wedge-shaped annular seat or groove to reoeive bhe edge of oho body, and closing thereon with awedge-like aotion when forced down thereon. I prefer 130 make the outer rim or member of the cover which slips outside the bodystraight andcylindrie, so that 113 will hug the body closely, and projeob ab the lower edge only the thickness of meta1 from the body, and oho inner ri1n 01 member which slips inside the body I make as straighband cylindric from top to bottom.
The upper edge 0r rim a of t-he body is shown as plain an straight, being only the thickness of tshe metal in width.
B designates the oover, provided With a double rim, b b,which is presented downwarcl. The outer rin1 0x mernber, b, of this double rim may be Strunk up 01 turned in from the szune piece with the head of the Cover in the usual wayand the innerrim 01 member,b mayhave its upper edge turned inward, as shown ab b*, and soldered so the under side of lhe oovertop. The outer and innen rims or members, b b, of the double rim are in close proximity, and are so arranged and placed relatively 130 ech other that between then1 is formed an annulargroove w l 01 seat, c, which is wedge-shaped o1 contraoned from the lower edge upward. This groove 01 seab c is so proporbioned thab ab the lower edgo it-s width is eonsiderably rnore than the thiokness of Ehe body-ri m a, while ab the top its width is less than the thickness of the rim a. Therefore in will be seen that when the coveris forced or pressed down upon the'body the seat 0r groove c closes With awedge-likeaction 011 the body-rim a and forms a tightjoinb therewith.
I prefer that Ehe wedge-like form of the groove or seat c shal1 be obtained by making Ehe, inner rim or member, b, of thedouble rin1 With an inward bevel or taper, as shown, and the onter rinn 01 member, b, may Ehen be straight and cylindrieand hug closely against the exterior of the body A.
For many purposes the joint produced by forcing t;he cover direot-ly down on the bodyrim a withoul;any substance between them will be sufficienb, thus producing a close metal-tometal joint. If greater seouriby be desired, a strip of 1neta1 foil ma.y be doubled or folded over thebody-rim a before the cover 1's applied, or a small quantity of suitable varnish orcen1- ent may be applied to the body-rimabefore tho oover is applied.
' henever it1 be desired to 'remove the coutents froxn the can or pail oho cover may be loosened and haken ofl by simply knoeking the IOO LII
lower edge 0f the rim b upward ab 0ne 01 more points around the circumterenqe 0f the can or pail, and this may be donewiiahoutin any way marring the b0dy 01 cover, anti will leave them fit; for re1aeated use.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combinationwith ametal pai1 orcan body, of a cover having a double 1im which is presented downward and forms a wedgeshaped annnlar seat 01 groove, c, t0 receive the edge 0f the body, anc1 closing thereon w1'th a wedge-like action when forced down, substantially as herein described.
2. Thecombinationwithametal pail or (an r5 body, 0f a cover having a double 1im, whicb forms a wedge-shaped groove 0x Saat, c, t0 receive the edge 0f th0 body and 130 close with a wedgelike acbion thereon, the outer member,
b, 0f the rim being straight and cylindric, and 20 theinner member, b, being beveled orslanted inward, substantially as herein described.
ALEXANDER WARNER.
