Specification of Letters Patent.

Force-Pumps; and I do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to pumps, and more particularly to power pumps of the type known as high pressure double acting force pumps.
In pumps of this character the pump body and jack, or that part of the casting which supports the gears and pinions for imparting motipn to the piston, are usually made separate, or the bearings are bolted on to the rear of the pump, and there is usually considerable movement between the pump and jack under high pressures, which movement is due no doubt to the play in the bolt holes in the pump and jack through which they are bolted to the same base, and this play between the two units eventually allows the shafting of the gears and the piston rod of the pump to get out of alinement, causing rapid Wear.
One object of my invention is to provide a pump of the character referred to having the pump cylinder or casing and jack integral, whereby movement between the two parts is entirely eliminated, thus insuring perfect alinement of the working parts of the pump at all times and decreasing the cost of repair parts, also eliminating considerable machine work on the rear end of the pump, and thereby reducing the cost of manufacture, and also reducing wear and the cost of renewal of worn parts. Another object is to provide an integral pump cylinder or casing and Jack adapted for a double train ofgears and pinions, or What is commonly known as a double drive, which is very desirable for high pressure work, as it distributes the power more evenly to the cross head of the pump through the connecting rods and thereby makes a better and more evenly balanced pump. Another object is to provide an integral pump body or casing and jack with a pump cylinder open at both ends, to adapt it to receive a boring bar and provide supports therefor at each end, together with a detachable plug for closing the open end adjacent to the jack, so that both ends of the cylinder being open it maybe easily bored out and a brass lining easily rolled.
The invention will first be hereinafter more particularly described, with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and then pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.
In said drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of so much of a double acting force pump as is necessary to illustrate my invention; the piston-actuating mechanismbeing indicated in dotted lines;

Referring to said drawings, in which the same reference letters are used to denote corresponding parts in different views, the letter A may denote the pump body or casing and B the jack, or that part of the casting which supports the gears and pinions for imparting motion to the piston. The two parts A and B'are'formed or cast as one integral structure with a cylinder A which is open at both ends; and a removable plug A is provided for closing the end thereof adjacent to the jack. The pump casing and jack are preferably cast integrally withsupporting legs or standards which have apertured lugs or flanges on their lower ends to receive fastening bolts by which said parts may be firmly secured to the floor of the building or other foundation on which the pump is mounted. The pump body or casing, including the valve casing with water ways therein and means for seatin suitable valves controlling said water ways, 1s formed with inlet and outlet openings at, and al on opposite sides thereof, for connection with inlet and discharge pipes, and with openings a and a in the top of the valve casing for inserting and affording access to the valves, and with an opening a in its top, for the attachment of an air chamber; said openings being preferably formed co-incident with projections or bosses on the casing which, in the case of the inlet and outlet openings and the opening for the attachment of the air chamber, may be interiorly threaded for connection with the inlet and discharge pipes, The water ways a? and a are in communication with said inlet and outlet openings and arecontrolled by suitable valves such as are ordinarily employed in pumps and which it is thought to be unnecessary to illustrate" or describe. As shown, the rear standard or supporting leg of the pump casing constitutes the front supporting leg or end of the jack, which is cast with integral side walls 6 and a rear supporting leg or end portion 6 and also with bearings Z) and 6 for a plurality of shafts having gear wheels thereon for actuating the piston. Said bearings 25 are formed integrally with said side walls I) while the bearings are formed on rearwardly and upwardly inclined extensions of one of said side walls and of said rear end portion 6 the latter being formed' with a. lateral extension on which one of said shaft bearings b is formed, so as to separate it a sufficient distance from the other bearing to support a longer shaft than the one journaled in the bearings b The bearingsb as shown, are substantially semi-cylindrical in form and adapted for the attachment thereto of similarly shaped caps which fit over the gear shafts and confine them in their bearings. Thus constructed the jack provides eflicient supporting bearings external to and integral with the pump cylinder and easing with provlsion for using a double drive plstonactuat ng mechanism having long-connecting rods, so as to evenly distribute the power from the engine to the piston rod and insure perfect alinement and even wearing of all parts with maximum efficiency and increased power. The piston actuating mechanism comprisesa' shaft ournaled'in the bearings b and carrying at or near each end av gear wheel which meshes with a pinion on a counter-shaft journaled in the bearings b and having a large gear wheel'thereo-n which meshes with a pinion on the main driving shaft; the gear wheels on said first mentioned shaft each having a wrist-pin: thereon for' connection with one end of a pitman rod which extends past the other end of the pump casing and is pivotally connected with one end of a cross-head which has an intermediate connection with the piston rod, as shownin dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, thus providing long connecting rods and greatly increasingthe power over similar piston-actuating mechanisms with short connecting rods. To relieve the cylinder head from lateral strain, lugs a7, may be cast on the forward end of the pump cylinder or casing and in reamed holes formed in these lugs may be pressed and secured by suitable nuts the ends of steel rods which serve as guides for the cross-head, as shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2. Valve caps. C, C, are removably secured on the pump casing over the openings for the valves therein by means of vertical bolts 0 which are secured in openended slots formed by bifurcated lugs or projections D on the pump casing and eX- tend up through apertures in the projecting end portions of the caps; bolt being seated in a recess at the base of the lug so as to prevent the bolt from turning and permit the cap to be removed by loosening the nut and sliding the cap endwise to release the bolt. These valve caps 'haveeach a circular machined projection on the under side thereof which fits upon a correspondingly shaped and 'machined seat therefor surrounding the valve opening, so as to reduce the pressure on the pac king be tween the valve cap and the pump."
The operation and advantages of my improved pump will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates. The described construction adapts the jack to support a double train of gears, and as the jack is integral with the pump body or casing perfect alinement of the gear shafts and piston is assured,-and all danger of these parts getting out of alinement is eliminated, while all wear on the gears, shafts, bearings, piston-rod and packing incident to the play allowed between the pump and jackwhen made separate, is avoided. This construction also enables me to arrange the pump and the gasolene engine which drives it in the same straight line, or in other words, to have the engine directly behind'the pump, thus making a more compact, evenly balanced' and complete pumping outfit, and one that occupies less space than pumps of the same general character as heretofore constructed. The pump cylinder being open at both ends permits a boring bar to be easily inserted and provides a support therefor at each end, so that the cylinder maybe easily bored out and the brass lining for the same easily rolled. The open end of the cylinder adjacent the jack is closed by merely screwing the removable plug therein, while the other end may be closed by a headplate through which the piston rod passes inthe usual manner;
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. An integral pump casing and jack; said jack being external to the pump and having the head of the shaft supporting bearings thereon, and said casing comprising a pump cylinder open at both ends and having inlet and outlet openings on opposite sides thereof and valve openings in its top together with water-ways connecting said openings and an opening for connection with an air chamber, all in one integral structure.
' 2. An integral pump body or casing and jack; said jack being external to the pump and having shaft-supporting bearings thereon, and said body comprising a pump cylinder open at both ends and having valve-openings in its top and inlet and outlet openings on opposite sides thereof; said openings being connected by suitable water-ways, and also having an opening in its top for connection with an air chamber.
3. An integral pump body or casing and jack; said jack being external to the pump and having shaft-supporting bearings thereon, and said body comprising a pump cylinder open at both ends and having a removable cap or cover for the open end thereof adjacent to said jack, and also having valveopenings in its top and an intermediate opening for connection with an air chamber, together with inlet and outlet openings on oppositesides thereof and connecting waterways.
4. A pump body or casing and a jack external thereto and integral therewith; said jack having integral-shaft-supporting bearings thereon, and said body comprising a pump cylinder open at both ends and integral with a valve casing having valve openings in its top and inlet and outlet openings on opposite sides and water-ways in communication therewith and also having an opening in its top for connection with an air chamber, together with a removable cap for closing the open end of the cylinder adjacent to said jack.
5. In combination, a pump casing and a jack external to said casing and integral therewith; said jack having spaced bearings thereon for a plurality of shafts, and piston actuating mechanism comprising a shaft on said jack having gear wheels thereon, a cross-head at the opposite end of said casing having an intermediate connection with the piston-rod, pitman-rods on opposite sides of said casing each connecting one end of said cross-head with one of said gear wheels, and a second shaft on said jack geared to said first named shaft and to a main driving shaft.
