To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. OARBrs, a citizen. of the United States, residing at Freeport, in the county of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Handling Metal Sheets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates broadly to apparatus for handling metal sheets, and specifically to a machine for conveying or transporting sheets of metal to the rolls, stack, pile or conveyances, etc.
The primary object of this invention is to provide an apparatus whereby sheets of metal are automatically conveyed to the place of disposition without injury to the sheets in the process of handling and conveyance.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described whereby the table from which sheets of metal are taken is elevated automatically as the height of the pile is decreased.
Further objects of this invention are to provide a device of the character set forth, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable and efficient in its use and inexpensive to manufacture.
To the accomplishment of these and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, the
invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts specifically described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention.

Referring more in detail to the drawings,
1 indicates a framing made of structural steel or any other suitable material upon which are mounted, in proper bearings, the rollers 2 provided at their outer ends with the shaft extensions 3 carrying the sprocket wheels 4 adapted to be driven by the chain 5.
Power is communicated to the rollers 2 by means of the sprocket wheel 6, mounted on the shaft 7 which is suitably journaled in the frame 1, engaging the chain 5. The gear 8, likewise carried by the shaft 7, meshes into the gear 9 which in turn meshes into the gear 10 on the shaft 11 of the motor 12. I
F or the purpose of conveying the metal sheets from the stack or pile upon the table 13'to the delivery rollers 2, a horizontally movable carriage 14 is provided shiftably mounted upon the guide member 15 positioned adjacent the top of the frame 1. A pinion 16, carried by the shaft 17 suitably journaled in the carriage 14, is in gear with the teeth of the rack bar 18 mounted on the under side of the guide member 15.
The vertical shaft 19, provided with proper bearings 20, is driven by the bevel gear 21 meshing into the bevel gear 22 on the shaft 7. The vertical shaft 19 is made to drive the horizontal shaft 23, suitably journaled at 24 in the frame 1, by means of the bevel gears 25 and 26. j
The bevel gears 27 and 28 are loosely mounted on the horizontal shaft 23 and are in meshwith the bevel gear 29 on the outer end of the shaft 17 to drive the pinion l6 in opposite directions.
The double-clutch 30, sliding upon a key which engages the groove 31 in the horizontal shaft 23, is positioned intermediate the bevel gears 27 and 28, and will rotate the gear 29, and the pinion 16, which is in gear with the rack bar 18, thereby causing the horizontally movable carriage 14 to travel to the right or left upon the guide member 15, according to the gear which is engaged by the double-clutch 30.
Attached to the under side of the carriage 14 is a cylindrical guide 32 in which operates a vertically movable plunger 33, pivotally connected at its upper end by the connecting rod 34 to the crank-shaft 35.
The arms 36, attached to the lower end of the plunger 33 and vertically movable therewith, are provided with the vacuum cups 37 which are adapted to engage and hold the metal sheets during the process of conveyance.
The vacuum cups 37 may be adjusted to different positions on the arms 36, in the openings 38, according to the width of the sheets to be conveyed.
A hollow shaft 39, provided with a suitable bearing in the carriage 14, carries the 43 in the carriage 14 and extending into the hollow shaft 39, is inoperative until the pin 44 is withdrawn from the groove 45, permit ting the spring 46 to force the clutch 47, sliding upon a key on crankshaft 35, into engagement with the clutch disk 41 and rotate said cran -shaft 35 therewith.
The pin 44 is actuated by the movement of the cam 48, mounted in the guides 49 on the carriage 14, in the opening 50 and the spring 51 will hold said pin 44 in engagement in the groove 45 until actuated by the said cam 48.
Formed integral with the clutch 47, is the gear 52, which meshes into the spur gear 53 mounted on the shaft 54. The spur gear 53, being twice the diameter of the gear 52, makes but one complete revolution while the gear 52 makes two revolutions.
The shaft 54 passes through the slot 56 and carries the cam which engages the lugs 57 and 58 and imparts a variable alternating rectilinear motion to the rod 59.
The double-clutch 30 is provided with the groove 60 in which operates the forked arm 61 pivotally connected by the rod 62 to the carriage 14 and at 63 to the rod 59.
The bracket 64, attached to the carriage 14, engages the gears 27 and 28, and the bracket 65, also attached to the carriage 14 engages the gear 42, so that said gears will shift horizontally on the shaft 23 when the carriage .14 is actuated to move to the right or left upon the guide member 15.
The spring 46 is positioned upon the crank-shaft 35 and may be adjusted by means of the collar 66 and set screw 67.
Oppositely disposed to the carriage 14 and the guide member 15, as illustrated in Fig. 3, to carry the other end of the sheet of metal, is the guide member 68 and the carriage 69. The shaft 17, provided with suitable hearings in the carriage 69 carries a pinion which operates on the rack bar 70 and communicates horizontal movement simultaneously to the carriages 14 and 69.
The crank-shaft 35 also extends to the carriage 69 and imparts vertical reciprocating motion to the plunger 71 operating in the cylindrical guide 72.
A rod 73 connects the plungers 33 and 71 and carries an adjustable block 74. The plunger 71 and the block 74 have each attached thereto arms and vacuum cups identical to the arms 36 and vacuum cups 37 attached to the plunger 33 for the purpose heretofore described.
The operation of the carriage mechanism and associated parts is as follows :While the apparatus is in operation the horizontal shaft 23 is rotating continuously, and assuming that the double-clutch 30 is in engagement with the gear 27, the said gear 27 will rotate gear 29 and the shaft 17 upon which are mounted the pinions which are in gear on the rack bars 18 and 70 and thereby shift the carriages 14 and 69 upon the guide members 15 and 68.
When the carriages 14 and 69 have reached a predetermined point directly over the pile of metal sheets upon the table 13, the adjustable stop 75 will strike the cam 48 which will withdraw the pin 44 from the groove 45 in the clutch 47 as the cam 48 passes through the opening 50 in the pin 44.
Gear 40 and the clutch disk 41, mounted on the hollow shaft 39, are rotated continuously by the gear 42, slidably keyed to the shaft 23. As the pin 44 is withdrawn from the groove 45 by the cam 48, the spring 46 on the crank-shaft 35, will force the clutch 47, slidably keyed to the crank-shaft 35, into engagement withthe clutch disk 41, thereby rotating said crank-shaft 35, and imparting vertical reciprocating motion to the plungers 33 and '71 pivotally connected to said crankshaft 35.
As illustrated in Fig. 5, the groove 45 is formed to extend diagonally on the clutch 47 so that when the said clutch 47 is in engagement with the clutch disk 41, the spring 51, positioned in the'opening 50 of the pin 44 and bearing on the cam 48, will force the pin 44 into the groove 45 only when the crank-shaft 35 has taken a one-half turn and the plungers 33 and 71 are fully extended. On the return or upward movement of the plungers 33 and 71 with the crank-shaft 35, the cam 76 rotating and bearing against the pin 44, will automatically disengage the clutch 47 from the clutch disk 41 and stop the rotation of the crank-shaft 35, until the pin 44 is again withdrawn, as the said pin 44 now engages the stop 77 extending across the groove 45, and holds the crank-shaft 35, slightly off center, from rotation by reason of the weight carried thereon.
When the plungers 33 and 71, by the rotation of the crank-shaft 35 pivotally connected therewith, are fully extended, the vacuum cups 37, on the arms 36 attached to said plungers and to the block 74, will engage and hold the top sheet of metal of the pile upon the table 13, and return with the plungers 33 and 71 to their initial positions to be conveyed by the carriages 14 and 69 to the delivery rollers 2, and deposit said sheet thereon.
The gear 52, being of sufficient width to engage the spur gear 53 when the clutch 47 is in engagement with the clutch disk 41, will rotate said spur gear 53 mounted on the shaft 54 carrying the cam 55. When the crank-shaft 35 begins its rotation, the smaller portion 78 of the cam 55 will engage the lug 57 of the rod 59 pivotally connectecl to the forked arm 61 and move the double-clutch 30 into neutral thereby stopping the horizontal movement of the carriages 14 and 69. Upon the upward or return movement of the plungers 33 and 71, by the crankshaft 35, the larger portion 79 of the cam 55 will engage the lug 57 of the rod 59, and move the double-clutch 30 into engagement with the gear 28 and thereby rotate the shaft 17 and the pinions mounted thereon, in the opposite direction.
From the foregoing description it will be readily understood that the reversing operation is accomplished automatically as the crank-shaft 35 makes one complete revolution for picking up a sheet of metal.
The spur gear 53 being twice thesize in diameter as the gear 52, it will be noted that after the reversing operation herein described, the spur gear 53 will have taken but a one-half revolution, and consequently the cam 55 will be in the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 4.
The carriages 14 and 69 will now move horizontally upon the guide members 15 and p 68 in the opposite direction, carrying the metal sheet, until said carriages are directly over the rollers 2, when the adjustable stop 80 will engage and operate the cam 48 in a manner identical to that heretofore de scribed with the exception that in this instance the lug 58, on the rod 59, will cooperate with the cam 55, and the doubleclutch 30 will consequently engage the gear 27 and again reverse the horizontal movement of the carriages 14 and 69.
When the plungers 33 and 71 are fully extended with the metal sheet adjacent the rollers 2, said sheet may be released from contact with said vacuum cups 37 in any suitable manner.
While vacuum cups, actuated to engage and release the metal sheets are specified in connection with the operation of this invention, it is to b understood that any suitable engaging and releasing medium may be employed in connection therewith, without departing from the principle or sacrificing anyadvantages of the invention.
The table 13 is provided with elevators, comprising the heads 81 having inner threaded portions 82, in which operate the screws 83. The lower ends of the screws 83 are swiveled in the sockets 86 adapted to be secured to the floor. Adjacent the lower ends of the screws 83 are the worm gears 87 which are operated by the worms 88 mounted on the shaft 89 suitably journaled at 90 and 91, and the worms 92 mounted on the shaft 93.
Disposed at right angles to the shafts 89 and 93 is the shaft 94, provided with proper bearings, and carrying the bevel gears 95 and 96. Gear 95 is in engagement with the bevel gear 97 on the shaft 89, and gear 96 with the bevel gear 98 on the shaft 93.
Mounted in the bearings 100 and 101, is the vertical shaft 99, the lower end of which carries the bevel gear 102 which meshes into the bevel gear 103 on the end of the shaft 94. On the upper end of the vertical shaft 99 is the bevel gear 104 which is in engagement with the bevel gear 105 carried by the shaft 106. Mounted on the shaft 106 are the gears 107 108 and 109 adapted to engage the gear 110 adjustably mounted, by the yoke 111 to the shaft 112, and graduate the distance of elevation of the table 13. Slidably mounted on the shaft 112 is the gear 113 which meshes into the gear 110. Positioned within the yoke 114, on the end of the shaft 112, is the ratchet wheel 115 which is adapted to rotate the shaft 112 when actuated by the ratchet 116 pivotally mounted in the yoke 114. K
The yoke 114 is pivotally connected to the rod 117 which in turn is pivotally connected to the arm 118 mounted on the shaft 119. Shaft 119 is provided with the bearings 120, and carries the lever 121. The lower portion 122 of the lever 121 is hingedly attached to the lever 121 proper in a manner so that the said lever .121 will be operative in one direction only.
For the proper operation of this apparatus it is essential that the distance between the metal sheets upon the table 13 and the vacuum cups 37 on the arms 36, remains relatively the same, and to maintain this distance it is necessary to elevate the table 13, after each conveying operation, a distance commensurate to the thickness of the sheet of metal removed therefrom. The elevating operation is performed automatically, as follows :As the carriages 14 and 69, on the guide members 15 and 68, are conveying a metal sheet to the rollers 2, the lug 123, on the upper surface of the carriage 69, will engage the lower portion 122 of the lever 121 and rotate the shaft 119. The arm 118, being attached to said shaft 119, will convey upward motion to the rod 117, thereby rotating the shaft 112 by means of the ratchet wheel 115 and the ratchet 116 in the yoke 114.
Gear 113 is mounted on the shaft 112 and will rotate the gear 110 which is in mesh with either the gear 107, 108 or 109, according to the elevation that is desired.
Gears 107, 108 and 109, being mounted on the shaft 106, will rotate the gear 105 meshing into the gear 104 on the vertical shaft 99. Gear 102, on the vertical shaft 99, engages the gear 103 on the shaft 94, and the gears 95 and 96, on said shaft 94, meshing into the gears 97 and 98 respectively, will rotate the shafts 89 and 93 which carry the worms 88 and 92 and operate the Screws 83 in the heads 82 to elevate said table On the return of the carriages 14 and 69, after depositing a sheet upon the rollers 2, the lug 123, on the carriage 69, will again engage the lower portion 122 of the lever 121, but said lower portion being hingedly connected to the lever 121, said hinged lower portion 122 will swing idly and the elevating mechanism remain inoperative.
Immediately after the elevating operation, the ratchet 116, in the yoke 114, will by gravity automatically reset itself into engagement with the ratchet wheel 115.
To lower the table 13, after the removal of the metal sheets therefrom, 'the shaft 106 is made to rotate in theopposite direction by means of the clutch 127 engaging the shaft 124 which is driven by the gear 126 meshing into the gear 125 mounted on the shaft eX- tension 3 of the end roller 2.
Pivoted at 132, is the lever 131 the upper end 'of which engages the clutch 127. The rod 130 is pivotally connected at 133 to the lever 131, and at 134 to the bell crank 129.
To automatically stop the lowering operation of the table 13, the lower end 128 of the head 81 will operate the bell crank 129, when said table 13 has nearly reached its lowest point, thereby disengaging the clutch 127 from the rotating shaft 124.
The rod 135, pivotally connected at 136 to the-lever 131 and formed with the hand-hold 137 at its outer end, is provided for throwing the clutch 127 into engagement with the rotating shaft 124 for lowering the table 13, or for stopping the lowering operation of the table 13 before the automatic stop is actuated.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of this invention will be readily understood without a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to, which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
lVhat I claim is I 1. An apparatus for the purpose set forth comprising traveling carriages, propelling mechanism therefor, a sheet conveyer supported by the carriages and provided with a suitable sheet pick-up, a sheet support, means engaged and actuated by one of said carriages during the travel thereof in one direction for intermittently moving said sheet support upwardly for positioning the sheet to be engaged by the pick-up of the conveyer, means arranged in the path of and actuated by one of said carriages during the travel thereof for temporarily discontinuing the drive of and reversing the direction of drive of said propelling mechanism causing thereby the arrest of the carriages and the travel ofthe carriages in a reverse direction, and means for controlling the travel of the carriages. An apparatus for the purpose set forth comprising traveling carriages, propelling mechanism therefor, a sheet conveyer supported by the carriages and provided with a suitable sheet pick-up, a sheet support, means engaged and actuatedby one of said carria'ges during the travel thereof in one direction for intermittently moving said sheet support upwardly for positioning the sheet to be engaged by the pick-up of the conveyer, means arranged in the path of and actuated by one of said carriages during the travel thereof for temporarily discontinuing the drive of and reversing the direction of drive of said propelling mechanism causing.
thereby the arrest of the carriages and the travel of the carriages in a reverse direction, and means for vertically moving said conveyer when the travel of the carriages is arrested.-
3. An apparatus for the purpose set forth comprising traveling carriages, propelling mechanism therefor, a sheet conveyer supported by the carriages and provided with a suitable pick-up, a sheet support, means engaged and actuated by one of said carriages during the travel thereof in one direction for intermittently moving said sheet support upwardly for positioning the sheet to be conveyed by the pick-up of the conveyer, means arranged in the pathof and actuated by one of said carriages during the travel thereof for temporarily discontinuing the drive of and reversing the direction of drive of said propelling mechanism causing thereby the arrest of the carriages and the travel of the carriages in a reverse direction, and means supported by said carriages for vertically moving said conveyer when the travel of the carriages is arrested. An apparatus for the purpose set forth comprising traveling carriages, propelling mechanism therefor, a sheet conveyer supported by the carriages and provided with a suitable piclcup, a sheet support, means engaged and actuated by one of said carriages during the travel thereof in one direction for intermittently moving said. sheet support upwardly for positioning the sheet to be engaged by the pick-up of the co'nveyer, means arranged in the path of and actuated by one of said carriages during the travel thereof for temporarily discontinuing the drive of and reversing the direction of drive of said propelling mechanism causing thereby the arrest of the carriages and the travel of the carriages in a reverse direction, and means for vertically moving said conveyer when the travel of the carriages is arrested, and means for regulating the upward movement of the sheet support. 1

An apparatus for the purpose set forth comprising traveling carriages, propelling mechanism therefor, a sheet conveyer supported by the carriages and provided with a suitable sheet pick-up, a sheet support, means engaged and actuated by one of said carriages during the travel thereof in one direction for intermittently movin said sheet support upwardly for positioning the sheet to be engaged by the pick-up of the conveyer, means arranged in the path of and actuated by one of said carriages during the travel thereof for temporarily discontinuing the drive of and reversing the direction of drive of said propelling mechanism causing thereby the arrest of the carriages and .the travel of the carriages in a reverse direction, and means supported by the carriages for vertically moving said conveyer when the travel of the carriages is arrested, and means for regulating the upward movement of the sheet support.
6. An apparatus for the purpose set forth comprising traveling carriages, propelling mechanism therefor, a sheet conveyer supported by the carriages and provided with a suitable sheet pick-up, a sheet support, means engaged and actuated by one of said carriages during the travel thereof in one direction for intermittently moving said sheet support upwardly for positioning the sheet to be engaged by the pick-up of the conveyer, means arranged in the path of and actuated by one of said carriages during the travel thereof for temporarily discontinuing the drive of and reversing the direction of drive of said propelling mechanism causing thereby the arrest of the carriages and the travel of the carriages in a reverse direction, and means for vertically moving said conveyer when the travel of the carriages is arrested, and means for lowering said sheet support.
7. An apparatus for the purpose set forth comprising traveling carriages, propelling mechanism therefor, a sheet conveyer supported by the carriages and provided with a suitable sheet pick-up, a sheet support, means engaged and actuated by one of said carriages during the travel thereof in one direction for intermittently moving said sheet support upwardly for positioning the sheet to be engaged by the pick-up of the conveyer, means arranged in the path of and actuated by one of said carriages during the travel thereof for temporarily discontinuing the drive of and reversing the direction of drive of said propelling mechanism causing thereby the arrest of the carriages and the travel of the carriages in a reverse direction, and means supported by the car riages for vertically moving said conveyer when the travel of the carriages is arrested, and means for lowering said sheet support.
8. An apparatus for the purpose set forth comprising traveling carriages, propelling mechanism therefor, a sheet conveyer supported by the carriages and provided with a suitable sheet pick-up, a sheet support, means engaged and actuated by one of said car riages during the travel thereof in one direction for intermittently moving said sheet support upwardly for positioning the sheet to be engaged by the pick-up of the conveyer, means arranged in the path of and actuated by one of said carriages during the travel thereof for temporarily discontinuing the drive of and reversing the direction of said propelling mechanism causing thereby the arrest of the carriages and the travel of the carriages in a reverse direction, and means for vertically moving said conveyer when the travel of the carriages is arrested, and means for regulating the upward movement of the sheet support, and means for lowering said sheet support.

An apparatus for the purpose set forth comprising traveling carriages, propelling mechanism therefor, a sheet conveyer supported by the carriages and provided with a suitable sheet pick-up, a sheet support, means engaged and actuated by one of said carriages during the travel thereof in one direction for intermittently moving said sheet support upwardly for positioning the sheet to be engaged by the pick-up of the conveyer, means arranged in the path of and actuated by one of said carriages during the travel thereof for temporarily discontinuing the drive of and reversing the direction of drive of said propelling mecha nism causing thereby the arrest of the carriages and the travel of the carriages in a reverse direction, and means supported by the carriages for vertically moving said conveyer when the travel of the carriages is arrested, and means for regulating the upward movement of the sheet support, and means for lowering said sheet support.
10. An apparatus for the purpose set forth the combination with a sheet support and a conveyer mechanism, a pair of horizontally movable carriages, propelling mechanism therefor, a conveyer supported by the carriages and provided with a sheet pick-up for transferring sheets from the said sheet support to said conveyer mechanism, means arranged in the path of and actuated by one of said carriages during the travel thereof for temporarily discontinuing the drive of and reversing the direction of drive of said propelling mechanism causing thereby the arrest of travel of the carriages and the travel of the carriages in a reverse direction, and means for vertically moving said con veyer when the travel of the carriages is arrested in one direction to cause the pick-up to move a sheet from the sheet support and for vertically moving the conveyer When the travel of the carriages is arrested When trav-,
