To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HENRY REININGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Barrel Feeding and Arresting Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in feeding and arresting devices for barrel washing and rinsing machines, and has for an object to provide a device which will re ceive a barrel, keg, or the like, and feed the same to a proper point and then arrest the same with the bunghole in a predetermined position so that the barrel washing and rinsing machine associated with the device may properly act on the barrel.
Another object of the invention is to produce a device which will automatically guide barrels to a rinsing machine and arrest the same in a proper position for correct operation by the rinsing machine.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device formed with a lifting and guiding structure which will lift the barrels to a given position and then shift the same so that the bunghole will be arranged centrally in order to properly engage the bunghole finder so that the barrel or keg may be properly positioned for being acted upon by the associated Washing and rinsing devices.
In carrying out the objects of the invention, the device is intended to be associated with a washing and rinsing device and to operate continuously therewith so that barrels may be fed in at one end of the device under consideration, and removed in a clean condition at the opposite end of the washing and rinsing device, the entire operation being automatic. The structure producing this result is provided with a skid or runway for receiving the barrels, and with raising arms or elevating members for receiving and raising successively the barrels from the skid. The raised barrels are deposited upon a second skid or guide, part of which is adjustable transversely so that the barrels thereon will be easily shifted transversely in order that the bunghole may be positioned centrally of the device. In order to cause a proper shifting of the barrels transversely, side guiding members are provided which act against the head of the barrel or keg, so that when the keg has passed the side guiding members, the bunghole will be in line with the center of the device and may be easily engaged by the bunghole finder arranged adjacent the laterally moving skid or guide.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side view of an embodiment of the invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan View of part of the structure shown in Fig. 1, the same being arranged on a slightly enlarged scale; Fig. 3 is a sectional view through Fig. 2 approximately on the line 33; Fig. 4 is a sectional view through Fig. 8 on the line 44; and Fig. 5 is adetail fragmentary side view of a cam and associated parts for controlling the feed of the barrels.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 indicates a frame provided with a suitable supporting standard 2. Arranged on one end of the frame is a barrel washing device, while on the opposite end is arranged the feeding and arresting mechanism embodying the invention. Extending outwardly from one end of the frame l is a skid or barrel guideway 4, designed to receive any desired number of barrels, the skid 4 being inclined so that the barrels will naturally travel toward the frame 1. A plate 5 is arranged between the side bars of the skid 4, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and is pivoted at 6 to the side bars. The outer end of the plate 5 is provided with uprights or stops 7 and 8 designed to engage or stop a barrel, as shown in Fig. 3. On the opposite end to the stops 7 and 8 are arranged overlapping lugs 9 and 10, designed to rest against any desired support, as for instance the side members of skid 4, in order to limit the downward pivotal movement of plate 5, the end containing lugs 9 and 10 being heavier than the opposite end.

tions 7 and 8 will be lowered and the barrel 12 allowed to automatically move down under the action of gravity to the position occupied by barrel 11 (Fig. 3) The means for causing plate to move in this manner is disclosed in Fig. 5. Referring to this figure, it will be seen a lever 13 is pivotally mounted upon one of the standards 2 so that end 14 is designed to engage the under surface of the projection 10, while end 15 is engaged by a roller 16 arranged on the cam 17, said cam 17 being rigidly secured to shaft 18. The shaft 18 extends transversely of frame 1 and carries intermediate its length a worm wheel19. The worm Wheel 19 meshes with Worm 20 rigidly secured to a main driving shaft 21 which extends for the full length of the'machine and is operated by any desired power, the same continuously moving during the operation of themachine. Rigidly secured to shaft 18 are a pair of wipers 22 designed to co-act with levers 23 rigidly secured toshaft 24. The shaft 24 is journaled in suitable bearings 25 and 26, and has rigidly secured to the ends thereof arms 27 and 28.v The arms 27 and 28 are designed to extend downwardly beneath the barrel 11 and to be raised or swung upwardly when the shaft 24 is operated, the shaft 24 being operated by lever 23, which is rigidly secured thereto.
' Arranged adjacent the shaft 24 and rigidly secured to frame 1, is a stationary skid 29 supporting a laterally movable skid 30, the skids 29 and 30 being slightly inclined so'as to allow the barrels fed thereon to move by gravity toward the bunghole finder 31. Arranged on the stationary skid 29 are tracks 32 and 33 designed to accommodate anti-friction rollers 34 and 35. The rollers 34 and 35 are adapted to support the skid 30, while allowing the skid to move freely back and forth transversely'of the frame 1. Extending laterally from frame 1 and rigidly secured thereto are brackets 36 and 37 (Figs. 2 and 4 A pair of sliding members '38 and 39 are arranged on each of the brackets 36 and 37 and are formedwith notches 40 for receiving cross pins 41 and 42. The sliding members 38 and 39 are each provided with a depending portion 43 having a threaded aperture therein for accommodating the threaded portion 44 of an adjusting wheel 45 whereby the sliding members 38 and 39 may be adjusted. The frames 46 and 47 have the pinsor shafts 41 and 42 passing therethrou'gh so that whenever the pins 41 and 42 are arranged in any of the apertures 40 the frames 46 and 47 will be positioned properly. Stops 48 and 49 are rigidly secured by any desired means, as rivets or screws, to the frames 46 and 47 so as to prevent the upper framesfrom swinging inwardly. The frames 46 and 47 are provided at the upper part with rollers 50 and 51 for engaging the ends of the barrel and shifting laterally the barrels so that the bunghole will be arranged centrally of the frame 1. The lower ends of the frames 46 and 47 are provided with weights 52 and 53 so as to cause the upper ends to be maintained in a certain position and to be moved back to that position when moved therefrom. It will be evident that the frames 46 and 47 are allowed a certain pivotal movement so that the weights 52 and 53 will be effective in moving the barrels transversely of the frame with the barrels, of course, resting on the transversely movable skid 30.
Arranged beneath the skid 30 and associated with the bottom thereof are projections 54 whereby a socket 55 is provided, the socket 55 accommodating one end of the lever 56 which is pivotally mounted at 57 on a cross brace 58. The lever 56 is provided with a weight 59 so as to normally hold the lever in a vertical position and move the same back to that position when moved therefrom. The lever 56 is designed to maintain the movable skid 30 in a central position and when moved therefrom, to move the skid back to said central position. The use of the weighted lever 56 will allow the skid to freely move to one side in order to properly center the barrel while at the same time presenting efficient means for reestablishing the skid in its proper position. A support 58 is connected in any desired manner with the frame 1.
Arranged adjacent the skid 30 is a bunghole arresting device 31 which is provided with beveled wheels 60 mounted upon shafts 61 and 62. Each of these shafts is journaled in a suitable casting 63 rigidly secured to frame 1, and each of these shafts also carries a beveled gear 64 which meshes with beveled gear 65. The gears 65 are rigidly secured to shafts 66 and 67 which carry beveledgears 68 meshing with beveled gears 69 and 70 rigidly secured to the power shaft 21. Arranged centrally of the casting 63 is a reciprocating plunger 71 designed to extend upwardly into the bunghole when permitted to do so, the plunger 71 carrying a roller 72 at the upper end which engages the barrel as the barrel is rotated and which passes through the bunghole when the same is reached. The plunger 71 is provided with a stop 73 which is pressed by a suitable spring 74. The plunger 71 is provided with a keyway 75 designed to engage a stationary key 76 whereby the plunger 71 may freely reciprocate but cannot rotate. A movable plug 77 is provided in the casting 63, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 whereby the plunger 71 and associated parts may be applied and removed at any time.
In operation, any desired number of barrels 12 are arranged on the skid 4 and then the machine is started. The machine is designed to automatically take the barrel forward and move it to the position of barrel 11 (Fig. 3) and from thence through the device shown in Fig. 3. From the device shown in Fig. 3 the barrels automatically move to the washing device shown in Fig. 1, and from thence are discharged to the rinsing device or disposed of in any desired manner, the operation being automatic from the time the barrels engage arms 27 and 28 until they are discharged completely clean...
It will, of course, be understood that skid 4 is maintained filled manually. As soon as the machine is started, the barrels being arranged as shown in Fig. 3, wiper 22 is rotated, which in turn will act on lever 23 for partially rotating shaft 24. As shaft 24- moves, arms 27 and 28 are raised until the barrel 11 moves by gravity on to the stationary skid 2-9, and from thence to the movable skid 30. If the barrel is not absolutely arranged centrally, one of the rollers 50 and 51 will engage the end of the barrel and move the barrel laterally so that the barrel will be properly centered at the time it moves by gravity off of skid 30 on to the wheels 60. The wheels 60 are continually revolving so that as soon as the barrel rests upon the wheels 60 it is revolved. As the barrel engages the wheels 60, the same also engages the plunger 71 and depresses the same. The plunger 71 remains depressed until the bunghole has been moved so as to register with the plunger, whereupon the plunger will automatically move into the bunghole and consequently stop the rotation of the barrel, though wheels 60 will continue to rotate. This completes the operation as far as the feeding and centering device is concerned, but various transporting devices will be operated which are associated with the Washing device and which will remove the barrel from wheel 60 to the washing device where the same is operated upon and finally discharged, the operation of the washing device and the discharge mechanism forming no part of the present invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a device of the character described, aframe, a laterally movable skid, and a pair of guiding members arranged on opposite sides of said laterally movable skid for guiding the barrel arranged on said skid so as to center said barrel.
2. In a device of the character described, a frame, a stationary skid arranged on said frame, a movable skid arranged on said stationary skid, said movable skid being adapted to move transversely of said frame, and means arranged on each side of said frame for engaging a barrel on said movable skid for moving the barrel and skid transversely of the frame so as to center the barrel previousto its dischargefrom said skid.
3. In a device of the character described, a frame, a. transversely movable skid .ar-
ranged on said frame, a pivotally mounted lever having one end. loosely engagingsaid skid, a weight arranged on the opposite end of said lever whereby said lever is normally held in a vertical position whereby when said skid is moved from a central position the same will automatically move back to said central position when released, and means acting against the ends of barrels on said skid for causing the barrels to move transversely of said frame in order to be centered previous to their discharge from the skid.

In a device of the character described, a frame, a stationary skid arranged on said frame, said stationary skid being formed with a pair of transversely extending tracks, rollers arranged on said transversely arranged tracks, a movable skid supported by said rollers, an automatically actuated centering device for said movable skid, said stationary skid and said movable skid being inclined, and means acting on said barrels for moving the same transversely of said frame while on said movable skid, said movable skid permitting a free transverse movement of the barrels so that the same may be properly centered.

In a device of the character described, a frame, a laterally movable skid arranged on said frame, means acting on barrels arranged on said skid for centering the same, said skid permitting a free movement of the barrels, said centering means including a pair of contacting members, pivotally .mounted frames supporting said contact members, and means for adjusting said frame transversely of said first mentioned frame.

In a device of the character described, a frame, a skid arranged on said frame, means for moving laterally the barrels on said skid for centering the same, said means including a pair of comparatively long side contact members arranged with their axes substantially in a horizontal plane and at an angle to said first mentioned frame, said side contact members converging toward a certain point on said first mentioned frame whereby said barrels as the same are moved over said skid are centered and a weighted swinging member for supporting each of said contact members.

In a device of the character described, a frame, a skid arranged on said frame, and centering devices arranged on each side of said frame, said centering devices comprising a pair of comparatively long converging rollers with their axes substantially in a horizontal plane, said rollers, being designed to contact with the ends of barrels on saidskid, .a pivotally mounted supporting In testimony whereof I have signed my frame for each of said rollers, a Weight arname to this specification in the presence of 10 ganged at the hfiwer end of each of said two subscribing Witnesses.
