Original application filed September 24, 1914, Serial No. 863,332. Divided and this application filed August T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM T. LYON, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in dental tool operating machinery and, in its general nature, the invention comprises a driving motor for a dental drill and cooperating mounting and driven connections between the motor and the drill, together with means for sustaining the motor in a relatively fixed location while permitting freedom of operation and manipulation of the dental instrument itself.
In its more subordinate nature, the invention includes those novel features of construction. C()1'11l)l112\l3l()11 and arrangement of parts: all of which will be fully described and then be specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the acctnn ninying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating my invention in use.
Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view on an enlarged scale showing the motor and the swivel connection with the dental instrument supporting arm.
Fig. 3 is a detail elevation and part section of the same.
In the drawings in which like letters and numerals of reference indicate like parts in all of the figures, 1 represents the motor support which is secured to the dental chair by a suitable clamp or bracket 2, and 3 (.lesignates the motor which is preferably of the inclosed type and is mounted on the top of the support 1.
The motor has its shaft 4 provided with a driving pulley 5 and the motor casing .is provided with a neck 7 having an annular groove 8 to receive the set screw 9 which holds the swivel collar (3 in place, the swivel collar (3 carrying the sweep arm 10 that is provided with a swivel joint 11 and with an extension portion 12 of the sweep arm, the swivel joint 11 including idler pulleys over which the endless driving belt 14 passes. the belt 14 also passing over idler pulleys 13 on the swivel joint between the arm 12 and the bracket 15 which carries the hand piece 16.

17 is a support on which the hand piece may be placed when not in use and 18 is an idler pulley which rides on the surface 19 of the motor housin'g to assist in supporting the parts.
20 designates the controller or rheostat which is used in connection with my apparatus but inasmuch as I make no claim in this application to the construction' of such controller, detail illustration of the same is thought to be unnecessary.
The rheostat or controller which I prefer to use with my present invention forms the subject-matter of an application filed September 24, 1914, Serial No. 863,332, of which application the present one is a divisional part. 1
The rheostat 20 may readily have its connection 23 disconnected from the motor circuit, since a connector 22 of any ordinary type may be employed and a switch 21 may be also used for cutting the current to the motor on and off in the usual way.
I also provide a tightener M for the endless belt 14 and, while I have shown the motor 3. as located on a standard 1, it should be understood that the motor 3 may be placed on a suitable wall bracket instead of on a standard 1, if found more convenient.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought that the complete construction, the operation and advantages of the inven tion will be clear to those skilled in the art.
W'hat I claim is:
1. In an apparatus of the classdescribed, the combination with a dental chair: of a motor support, a motor mounted on said support, a foot operated motor controller, connection between said motor and said controller. said motor having a neck, a sweeparm swiveled on said neck, a dental instrument carried by said arm, driving connec tions between said instrument and said motor, said motor including a housing having a track, and an idler wheel on said sweep arm to ride on said track.
In an apparatus of the class described. a motor support. a motor mounted oil-said support. said motor having a neck. a sweep arm swiveled on said neck, a dental instrument carried by said arm, and driving connections between said instrument and said motor, said motor including a housing having a trackway, and an idler wheel on said sweep arm to ride on said trackway.
3. In an apparatus of the class described, a motor support, a motor mounted on said support, said motor having a neck, a sweep arm sWiveled on said neck, a dental instrument carried by said arm, and driving connections between said instrument and said motor, said motor including a housing having a trackway, and an idler wheel on said sweep arm to ride on said traclnvay, said sweep arm being composed of articulated sections and provided with means for eX- tending or retrackinglthe sections for belt tightening purposes, and said driving connection including a driving belt.
4. In an apparatus of the class described, a motor support, a motor mounted on said support, said motor having a bearing neck, an articulated sweep arm swivelly mounted on said neck, an idler wheel bearing engagement between said sweep arm and said motor, a dental instrument mounted on said sweep arm, a belt and pulley driving connection between said dental instrument and said motor, said sweep arm having a sustaining hook adjacent to the motor, which is adapted to receive the end of the sweep arm when folded back to sustain the dental instrument, substantially as shown and described.
