POLISHING-MACHINE.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 25, 1913.
Application filed March 19, 1915. Serial No. 15,495.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANTONIO Gr. FER- RARINI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Polishing-Ma chines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to polishing or surfacing apparatus, and the principal ob ect of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive machine for polishing r surfacing the walls or wainscoting of buildings, particularly walls or wainscoting made of or faced with terrazzo, concrete, -mosaic work, or other like material.
A further object is to provide a machine of this sort consisting of a polishing tool, a motor, and a flexible shaft driven by the motor on which the tool is supported, whereby the tool may be moved over a very considerable areaand turned in whatever posi- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the ma chine, Fig. 2, a longitudinal sectional view taken through the tool holding shank and the outer end of the flexible shaft, and Fig. 3, a cross sectional view on line 3-3 of s Fig. 2.
Like characters of reference designate like parts in the several figures of the draw- 1ns.
eferring. to the drawings, designates a platform which is preferably mounted on wheels 11.
12 is a motor, of any desired type, supported on the platform 10. I have shown an electric motor but any other motor might be employed.
13 is a shaft mounted in brackets 14 on a framework 15 carried on the platform 10.
The polishing or surfacing tool consists preferably of a generally cylindrical body of carborundum or other suitable material 16, the outer end of which isrounded, as indicated at 17; the end being rounded particularly so that it will fit into the rounded surface or cove base 19 which frequently intervenes between the floor 20 and side wall 21 of a building. The surfacing tool is secured to a hollow tool-carrying element 22 through which extends a shaft 23. The tool is clamped between a boss 24 on the tool-carrying element 22, and a washer 25 and nut 26 on the end of shaft 23, the nut and washer being located in a recess 27 in the end of the tool. Preferably a lead bushing 22 intervenes between the tool-carrying element 22 and the tool, this bushing affording a tight fit between the tool and the carrying element. The latter is rigid with shaft 23. i
The shaft 23 turns in ball bearings 28 in a casing 29, the bearings being located in heads 30, 31, forming part of the casing 29.
,To the outside of the latter is secured, by
means of screws 32, a strip 33 having an offset projection 34 extending beyond the casingadjacent the surfacing tool 16. To the strip 33, 34 are secured studs 35 on which are arranged hand grips 36 held on the studs by nuts 37 and formed with recesses 38 for spiral springs 39. The tool carrying shaft 23 is driven in any suitable manner from shaft 13, for example, by flexible shafting consisting of shaft sections 10, 4:1, inclosed in hinged casings 42,43, and connected to each other and with shaft 23 by pinion 44:.
Operation: The truck 10 on which the apparatus is mounted may be moved from place to place in the room as the work progresses. Without moving the truck the flexible connection between the tool-carry ing shaft and the driving shaft 13 on the truck allows the former very considerable amplitude of movement. The operator manipulates the tool by taking hold of the hand grips 36. Where springs 39 are interposed between the hand grips and the easing supporting the tool (which is the way I prefer to construct the machine), the work of manipulating the tool is facilitated both in polishing fiat surfaces and-also the curved or cove base surface 19 between the wall and the floor since the tool will adjust itself to the surface on which it operates so that the workman does not have to be so carefulto keep the polishing surface of the tool inexact alinement with the wall or floor surface operated upon. Moreover, these springsreduce vibration. The rounding of the tool at the end permits the polishing of a cove base such as indicated at 19 in Fig. 1. The surfacing tool 16 may be readily removed when worn outvand a new tool substituted.
I claim:
1. In apparatus 6f the 'character described,
ing in which said tool-carrying shaft is revolubly mounted, handles on said casing,
and a polishing tool on said tool-carrying shaft generally cylindrical in form and withits outer end rounded.
3. In apparatus of the character described, the combination of a movable platform, a motor mounted on said platform, a-shaft driven by said motor, flexible shafting connected with said driven shaft, a tool-carrying shaft driven by the flexible shaft, a casing in which said tool-carrying shaft is revolubly mounted, a tool holder rigid on said tool-carrying shaft formed with a the combination of a movable platform, a
motor mounted on said latform, a shaft driven by said motor, flexible shafting connected with said driven shaft, a tool-carrying shaft driven by the flexible shaft, a casing in which said tool-carrying shaft is revolubly mounted, a tool holder rigid on said tool-carrying shaft formed with a shoulder, a polishing tool generally cylindrical in form with its outerv end rounded and formed with a recess which is arranged upon said tool holder, means located within said recess for binding the tool between said shoulder and the end of the tool-carrying shaft, studs on said casing, handles slidably mounted on said studs, and springs interposed between the handles and the casing.
5. In apparatus of the character described, the combination of a movable platform, a motor mounted on said platform, a shaft driven by the motor, a tool carrying shaft, a polishing tool having-a generally cylindrical polishing surface mounted on the outer end of said tool carrying shaft so as to i'evolve.therewith, a casing in which the inner end of the tool carrying shaft is revolubly supported and which is provided with laterally extending means whereby the tool may be handled by the operator, and flexible shafting operatively connecting said motor driven shaft with the tool carrying shaft.
