PLATE-LIFTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented ay 1, 1917.
Application filed December 9, 1916. Serial N 0. 136,056.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR W. LosnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dover, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plate-Lifters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improve ments in plate lifters and it. is an object of the inventionto provide a novel and improved device of this general character which may be employed with a maximum of efliciency in connection with plates or other flanged utensils to facilitate the handling thereof particularly when in a heated condition.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved plate lifter comprising two relatively movable clamping members, one of said members being slidably mounted upon the other.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved plate lifter whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.-
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a plate lifter constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in applied position;
Fig. 2 is a view in top plan of my improved lifter as herein embodied, a coacting plate being indicated by dotted lines;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken through the elongated member and the handle member as herein disclosed;,and
Fig. 4 is a view in top plan of the handle member as herein included, detached.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes an elongated fiat strip of metal having one end portion returned, as indicated at 2, with the bend 3 thereof on a predetermined radius and the free extremity of the returned portion 2 is provided with the oppositely directed arcuate arms a preferably of the same length and which are adapted to be engaged beneath the flange F of a plate P or the like.
Slidably mounted upon the elongated member 1 is the handle H. The inner end of the handle H is provided with the perpendicularly related extension 5 terminating in the inwardly directed arm 6 occupying a plane substantially parallel with the elongated member 1 and said arm is provided with the oppositely directed arcuate arms 7 also adapted to underlie the flange F of a plate whereby it will be perceived that the handle H may be readily adjusted longitudinally of the member 1 for effecting a gripping action upon the plate so that the same may be readily lifted and which is of particular advantage when the plate is in a heated condition.
The outer or opposite end of the handle member H is also provided with the perpendicularly related extension 8 disposed in the samegeneral direction as the extension 5 hereinbefore referred to and which serves to facilitate the movement of the handle H upon the member 1.
The end portion of the member 1 outwardly of the handle H and remote from the returned portion 2 is curled or beaded, as indicated at 9, whereby the handle member H is held against displacement upon the member 1.
The handle H preferably comprises a sleeve split longitudinally, as indicated at 10, whereby the same will be held against movement longitudinally of the member 1 when pressure is imposed thereon by the hand grasping the same or if preferred and the conditions warrant the member 1 may be grasped in advance of the handle H, whereby the contact of the extension 8 with the hand holds the handle H against movement in a direction away from the plate with which the improved lifting device may be employed.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a plate lifter constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremeley simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly Well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof andthe free portion of said extension being also for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
A plate lifter comprising an elongated member of fiat material and having one end portion returned, the free extremity of said returned portion being provided with oppositely directed arms, the inner edges of the arms and the adjacent end of the member being in continuity, and a handle slidably mounted upon the elongated member and provided with an angular extension,
provided with oppositely directed arms, the inner edges of said last named arms and the adjacent end of the extension being also in continuity, said handle member adjacent its end remote from the first named extension being provided with a second extension disposed in the same general direction as the first named extension, said handle member comprising a sleeve havingits upper face split longitudinally.
In testimony whereof I hereunto ailix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
