The Object of thisinvent-ion 1s to-provideka new and improved yoke, together with allied elements coacting between suchy yoke andra eopuler butt to provide a positive engagement against draft-strains between the yoke and coupler. :Another object is to provide a egnstruction of the class described which will-'enable ,ready assembling and disassembling o f the couplerand yoke.

` These and othery objectswill be set forth in the following specification and as shownin in which- Figure 1"-fis a perspeetive view partly in section of my invention as applied to a rail way car.
Fig. 2 is a perspective of the yoke. n Fig. 3 is a transverse rigging draft members ofa car along the line 3,3 of Fig.l 1; and

Other followers 13 are similarly carried between the arms of the yoke 12, and coil springs 111 eoaet therewith in the usual manner, rthe type of draft rigging shown being that known as tandem in which two sets of followers and springs are used. At its for ward ond the yoke 12 is open, arms of the yoke 12 being inwardly extended to form lugs 12b (sce Fig. 1) these lugs 12b being inturned as shown in the drawings.

122 serve to prevent spreading of the yoke arms at the open end ofthe. yoke and thcreby serveto maintain the inturned lugs 12b in fixed relation. The coupler rbar 15 is provided with the enlarged butt 15 forming the shoulders 15b, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 4, for example. This coupler butt 15 is of such dimensions as to enable its insertion between the inturned ends onv lugs 12b i of the yoke 'when the device is assembled.
In such assembling before the draft rigging properis placed in the yoke 12, the' coupler is inserted, as stated, between the lugs 121 and passed rearwardly in the yoke 12 to the position shown in Fig. 1l, that is, rearwardly of the side wings 12. lVhen in this position what I term the key blocks 16 are placed in'position, as shown in Fig. 4, whereupon the coupler bar is drawn out to position shown in Fig. 1 permitting the placing of the draft rigging. Each of these key blocks 16 comprises the rearwardly extending portion 16a and the enlarged forward end 1Gb havin@ the shoulder 16 contacting with the shoulder 15b of tlie'coupler butt 15a. The head 1Gb of each block 16 is of a size to suo stantially extend between the coupler bar 15 yoke 12'and the body portion 1Ga of suchbloek extends substantially between the coupler butt 15 and the adjacent arm of the yoke 12. These blocks areconstruetcd to fit as closely as possible while permitting a slight forward and back movement of the coupler relative to the yoke vin this form ofl tandem rigging in meeting the usual draft and buiiing strains and shocks. It will be obvious that in applying my invention to the single rigging I may omit the key usually provided and rely upon these'blocks 16 to prevent accidental disassembling of the drawbar and yoke.` The side wings 12c will serve to prevent accidental displacement or side slip of the key blocks 1 6, as parent, and the :body `portion 16'sL thereof is made of a sufficient length to prevent falling down or janine` 1g of the blocks between the shoulder 15b and the lugs or inturned ends 12b. l'The depth and thickness of the heads 16b is sufiieient to rovidev a reqlired strength between the coup er butt andthe yoke according to the strains and stresses met with in use.I The coupler bar 15 is'apertured, as indicated at 15, and a key 17 is. adapted to exwill be ap- Iii tend through the aperture 15c as well as through the slots l2, the slots 12d being of suoli size as to permit any sliding therein of such key 17, u'hile the latter closely lits the aperture 15 in the coupler 15. Suitable ing a shouldered butt, the butt of said coilpler being of such size as to permit the insertion thereof bel'zween said lug portions, key block members located between the shoulders of said coupler butt and said lug slots are provided in the draft sills tov per-g portion,'and means to normally prevent disinit sliding therein ol the key 17. The slots 12d are preferably arranged so that the key 17 Will contact with the forward end thereot' at the same time the shoulders 15b of the coupler butt 15a begin to press against the heads of the filler block 16, forcing the latter against the lugs 12". It will be apparent by this means that the permitted stress or strain on draft shocks. may be greatly increased over the amount ofthe same permitted when merely the key construction is used and I may provide a greater factor of safety by increasing the depth of the head 16b on filler block 16 by slightly altering dimensions of the allied parts. Such necessary alterations may be readily made without interfering with the necessary limits as established by conventional car building practice. These alterations may not be made beyond certain limits to. increase the resisting strength in the key construction.
It apparent that I may modify or alter dimensions or constructions shown without affecting the operation of my invention and I do not wish to be restricted to the form shown and described beyond the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In combination, a yoke having inwardly directed lug portions, a coupler havplacement of said key block members, said means being arranged to prevent spreading of the arms of said yoke adjacent said lug portions, said last named means comprising wings integrally formed with and extending between the arms of said yoke.
2. In combination, a yoke having inwardly directed lug portions, a coupler having a shouldered butt, the butt of said coupler being of such size as to permit the insertion thereof between said lug portions, key block members located between the shoulders of sai-al coupler butt and said lug portion, means to normally prevent displacement of said key block members, said means being arranged to prevent spreading of the arms of said yoke adjacent said lug portions, said last named means comprising wings integrally formed zvith and extending between the arms of said yoke, and means coacting with said coupler butt and said wings to substantially prevent rearward movement of the former relative to the latter.
In testimony `whereof, I have subscribed my name.
