OSCAR S. SWITZER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DISPLAY-RECEPTACLE.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented May I, 1917.
Application filed. February 1, 1916. Serial No. 75,515.
To all whom t may] concern.'
Be it known that I, Oscar: S. SWITZER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to display receptacles and has especial reference to devices of this character wherein the receptacle, as. a whole, constitutes the cover of another and larger storage receptacle.
l One of the objects of my invention is to provide a receptacle underlying a transparent top or cover for another and larger receptacle wherein to display samples, or smaller quantities of the goods that may be contained or stored in the partly filled larger supply receptacle, for inspection, by the purchasing public.
Another object of my invention is to provide an ornamental tray or pan, secured to the underside of a glass plate cover and f movable therewith, wherein to display articles of food or like commodities, for sale and to provide removable partitions in said tray, whereby to divide it into a plurality of compartments within which to display as many different sorts of articles.
Other and further objects of my invention will become readily apparent to persons skilled in the art, from a consideration of the following description whentaken in conjunction with the drawings, wherein t-f Figure 1 is a central vertical section, taken on line 1-1 of Fig. 2, of a storage receptacle showing my cover receptacle applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
In all the views the same reference characters are employed to indicate similar parts.
In my former Patent 7 51,881 dated February 9th, 1904, for cover attachment for receptacles I have described and claimed the glass plate cover and means for hinging it to a receptacle as herein shown, and it is in association with this, or similar covers, that my present invention is intended to be used.
5 is a storage or supply receptacle within which it is desired to contain commodities or articles to be sold to the public. A glass top 6, which is preferably octagonal shaped, covers the receptacle 5, being secured to a handle 7, which is hinged, as at 8, to an encircling wire 9 that holds the top in position on the receptacle.` A wire projection 8 serves as a4 stop to limit the backward movement of the cover. A iiat metal plate is bent into U form to provide a clip 9', the base of which rests against the outside of the receptacle and the legs of which are perforated to receive the wire 9 and aid in positioning the same. rIhese parts constitute the subject matter of my former patent, to which reference has been made. Underlying the glass plate 6 is a tray or pan 10, preferably corrugated around its edges, as at 11, partly to give it an ornamental appearance and partly for the purpose of securing the partitions v12, in place. The tray 10 is relatively shallow and is preferably smaller in diameter than the diameter of the receptacle 5. It is held in place by a wire 13, which underlies the bottom of the tray, and which has an integral clip 141C, at each of its ends which overlies the edge of the plate at opposite sides, and holds the tray in place thereon, so that when the top or cover 6 is lifted on its hinge 8 the tray is lifted with it. The articles to be displayed are placed in the tray 10 and are visible through the glass cover 6. In order that a number of different separated articles may be exhibited in the tray, I provide partitions 12, which consist of flat metal strips, substantially equal to the depth of the tray, having their ends entering corrugations 11 in the edge of the tray, to prevent them from shifting. The strips are bent into two L shaped pieces meeting at a central point, where they are riveted together, as at 12. These partitions may be quickly and easily removed from the tray and may be of such number as to divide the tray into any desired number of separated receptacles or compartments.
The articles in the display tray 10 are tightly covered by the overlyingglass plate 6, and thus protected against dust and other objectional matter and the incursion of obnoxious insects, and the like. The ornamental display receptacle also adds ornamentation to the package, as a whole, and presents a more attractive appearance than if the receptacle 5 were partly filled with a heterogeneous assortment of articles not symmetrically and*l tastily displayed and located in a deep, dark receptacle ,"practically out of sight of the observer.
To remove the contents from the display tray l0, it is only necessary to remove the Wire brace 18 and the tray then Will fall away from the top or cover 6 When both the cover and the'tray may be cleansed and the tray replaced.
My receptacle and cover may be applied to barrels, drums, boxes on other receptacles, ot any suitable configuration, andvvhile it, is a great convenience it adds considerable to: the, generalg appearance of. the store in whichl it; is contained.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
l. The combination With a supply receptacle, of ar Hat glass cover` plate hingedly connected tothe receptacle and adapted to -restv directly upon the upper edge' thereof,
a, relatively shallow tray underlying said plate Within` the receptacle, andA means for detachably securing. the tray to said glass f cover plate.
2, The combination with a supply receptacle, of aA flat glass. cover plate hingedly connectedt to the receptacle and adapted to rest directly upon the upper` edge thereof,
a relatively shallow tray underlying said glass plate Within the receptacle, and a Wire rod underlying the bottom of the tray and flattened at its'ends to pass outside of the receptaolebetyveen the edge thereof andthe cover plate, the ends of the Wire being hook shaped to engage the periphery of the glass cover plate and secure the tray in position.
3, T hecombination with a supply receptacle, of a Hat glass cover plate hingedly connected to the receptacle and adapted to rest directly upon the upper edge thereof, a relatively shallow tray" underlying said plate Within the receptacle, means for detachably securing the tray to said glass cover plate, the peripheral Wall of said tray being vertically corrugated, and a. removable partitionl structure, the outer ends of which are adapted to engage the corrugated Wall of the tray and thereby positively position the partition structure With respectL to the tray.
I- n testimony whereof:` I hereunto set my hand in the presence oftWo Subscribing Witnesses.
