IMPROVEMENT IN ANlMA-L-POKES.
V Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,392, dated January 2, 1872.
. Specification describing a certain Improved Poke, invented by STEPHEN (J. LEONARD, of Rushville, in the county of Yates and State of New York.
Figure 1 represents a front view of my improved tether. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on the line 0 0, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same on the line k k, Fig. l. 1
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
This invention relates to a new animal-poke, which is provided with a spring cushion concealing the prongs or pokes and with contrivances for adjusting the throat-latch in suitable position.
The poke consists of a yoke or bow, A, of a crossbar, B, secured to the edge of the yoke, a movable shield or cushion, O, and throatlatch I). From the cross-bar B project the prongs a a, of which a suitable number -may be used. From it project, also, guide-pins b b, on which the shield or cushion O can slide. Spiral or other springs d d are interposed between B and O to hold the latter outward,
making it conceal and protect the points of the pins a, as indicated in Fig. 3. Ears or lugs e pressure by the animal against the shield to reach them. The poke is prevented from slipping from the neck of the animal by the throatlatch D, which is made of leather or, other suitable fabric, or a chain, or equivalent flexible article. It is, by snaps ff or other means, se-
cured to staples E E, which are firmly fast- The staples are preferably made in sections,
with several transverse bars, allowing the ends of the throat-latch to be secured at suitable height to fit larger or smaller animals.
The ,top of the bow may be cushioned by means of leather wound around or applied against it.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A poke composed of a bow, A, cross-bar B, movable shield (J, and throat-latch D, all combined substantially as herein shown and described. I
2. The cross-bar B having the adjustable prongs a, and combined with the springs d, guide-pins b, lugs e, and movable shield O, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The sectional staples E E applied to the outer edge of the bow A for securing the ends of the adjustable throat-latch l), as specified.
STEPHEN G. LEONARD.
