To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, JAMES B. BAUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Junction, in the county of Mesa and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail- Joints; and I do hereby declare the followj ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The primary object of this invention is to prevent relative movement between the meeting ends of the rails of a track, so as to effect smooth travel of the rolling stock thereover and the prevention of noise.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a rail joint comprising a novel type of angular or sh plates, which lie on opposite sides of the meeting ends of adjacent rails, and novel types of fastening means to take the place of bolts for con- 'fleeting the plates and the rails.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of base plate for the rails, which has associated therewith novel types of clamps for preventing spreading of the rails.
Other objects will appear and be better understood from that embodiment of my invention of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof, in which:
Figure 1 is a detail view of abutting rails with one of the plates removed,
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, taken through the rails and the plates, and
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 3--3 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the numerals 1 and 2 designate abutting rails. the meeting ends of which have alined terminal slots 3, and each rail is provided, at a point spaced from the meeting ends, with another longitudinal slot 4.
Located on opposite sides of the rails 1 and 2, and extending across the meeting ends thereof are angle or fish plates 5 and 6. The plate 5 has the inner surface of the vertical side thereof provided, at spaced points, with lugs designated 7 8 and 9. The slots 4 in the rails 1 and 2 receive the lugs 7 and 9, and the said slots are of Specification of' Letters Patent.

lengths exceeding the widths of the lugs 7 and 9 so as to admit of contraction and expansion ofthe rails. The intermediate lug 8 is of a width exceeding the width of the lugs 7 and 9 and when the plate 5 is in operative position the said intermediate lug 8 is received by the alined slots 3; formed in the meeting ends of the rails 1 and 2 and prevents relative vertical movement of the abutting rails so as to eliminate noise during the passage of rolling stock over the rails.
The plate 6 has the inner face of the vertical side thereof provided at spaced points with recesses 10, 11 and 12, the intermediate recess 11 being of a width exceeding the widths of the recesses 10 and 12, and the said recesses 10, 11 and 12 register with the respective slots 7, 8 and 9, as shown in Fig. 2. When the plates 5 and 6 are in operative position, the free ends of the lugs 7 8 and 9 on the plate 5 terminally extend beyond the opposite side of the rails and are received by the respective recesses 10, 11 and 12 formed in the plate 6. The horizontal portions of the plates 5 and 6 rest on the upper surface of the base flange of the rails 1 and 2, and each has its longitudinal edge lying flush with the adjacent longitudinal edge of the adjacent base flange.
Base plates 13 underlie the rails 1 and 2 and each has its opposite ends provided with raised portions 14, the inner ends of which are beveled, as shown at 15. Rail clamps are located on the opposite ends of each base plate 13 and each clamp consists of a plate 16 which has its'under surface provided with a cut-out portion 17, for receiving the adjacent raised portion 14, the said plate being secured in place by means of fastening elements 18 which may be. as shown, spikes. or if desired lag screws. The inner edge of each plate 16 abuts against the adjacent longitudinal edge of the base flange of the adjacent rail, and-each plate has associated therewith a clamping flange 19, which extends toward the rails and the said flange has its inner side provided with a shoulder 20 for engaging the adjacent edge of the horizontal portion of the adjacent fish plate. The flange 19 engages over the horizontal portion of the adjacent sh late and underlies a longitudinally extend ng sib al :formed on the vertical side of the adjacent fish plate at the upper edge thereof, the terminal of the flange being straight and engaging the outer surface of the vertical side of the adjacent fish plate.
Having thus described my invention What I claim as new, is:
A rail joint comprising a pair of abutting rail sections, plates mounted on opposite sides of the rail sections, ribs formed on the plates, a base plate underlying the rail and having its opposite ends extending beyond thev side of the rail and provided with raised portions, the inner edges of the, raised portions beingbeveled, plates located at the opposite ends of the base plate and having cutouty portions therein for receiving the raised portions on the base plate and to provide shoulders for engaging the beveled edges on the raised portion, clam-ping members carried by the last-mentioned plates and operatively engaging the first-mentioned plates and fastening elements extending through the last-mentioned plates and the base plate and located on the opposite sides of the clamping members.
