BURGLAR-A'LARM SYSTEM.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 24, 1917.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMON B. Hess, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burglar-Alarm Systems, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to burglar alarms and contemplates the provision of a simple and efiicient means which may be associated with any burglar alarm circuit and which is adapted to automatically control an auxiliary circuit. For example, a circuit in Which is included an alarm signal, without the necessity of electrically shunting out the last exit for the purpose of enabling the user to leave the protected structure after the alarm has been set.
In the construction of alarms of this class heretofore, one particular means of exit has been designated as the exit to be equipped with a device, such for example, as a lock switch, by means of which the circuit wiring of such designated exit is disconnected or shunted out of circuit before the alarm is set, and after the alarm is set and the designated exit door closed,
it is necessary to operate the circuit shunt-- ing device in order to connect the exit into the protective circuit. In practice, considerable disadvantage and risk attend the employment of these shunting devices for governing the operative and inoperative status of the system, as applied to an exit, as under such conditions, the protective operative status of the system has a dependency upon the actual manual operation of the door shunting means.
It is an object of my invention to eliminate the use of a door shunt and the usual wiring connections and devices previously used therewith.
It is a further object of this invention to so construct an alarm system, that the person using the same may select and use any means of exit as the last exit.
It is a further object of this invention to provide means whereby an alarm may be set with all exits ajar, so arranged that the closing of the last exit will automatically set the alarm circuit for the actuation of a signal, upon the occurrence of a change of status from normal in the protective circuit after the last exit has. been closed.
This invention is set forth in detail in the following description and is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which there is diagrammatically represented a conventional burglar alarm circuit, embodying my invention.
The circuit may be traced from the generator 1, wire 2, to the contact 3 on the door frame 4, thence to contact 5 on door 6, thence by wire 7 to flexible wire 8, wire 9, to contact 10 on door frame 11, thence to contact 12 on door 13, wire 14, to contact 15 on door 13, to contact 16 on door frame 11, then by Wire 17, to main electromagnet 18, wire 19 to second electromagnet 20, wire 21, to contact 22 on door frame 11, to contact 23 on door 13, thence by wire 24, to contact 25, to contact 26, wire 27 to flexible wire 28 on door 6, wire 29, to contact 30, to door frame contact 31, thence by wire 32, back to the opposite side of generator 1.
It will thus be seen that when the system is in its normally set status, the effect of either a break or cross in the wiring which has just been traced will denergize electromagnet 18 and cause its armature 35 to fall. I
. The alarm circuit is traced as follows:
From battery 41, by means of conductor 46, to relay armature 35, its coiiperant contact 36, conductor 45, to shutter 38, contact 39, conductor 44, switch contact 34, switch member 33, conductor 43, to signal 40, conductor 42, to the opposite side of battery 41.
In the drawing the system is diagrammatically represented as at rest. Now assuming that the user desires to set the system, the user leaves such exits ajar as he desires to use in leaving the guarded structure, then closes or sets switch lever 33 on its cooperant contact 34. As the last exit is closed the protective circuit is completed. Main electromagnet 18 attracts its armature 35 out of engagement with its associated contact 36. Second electromagnet 20 attracts its armature 37 thereby releasing its associated shutter 38, and allowing it to fall into engagement with contact 39. Now assuming either of the exits just described as closed, to have been re-opened, or otherwise interfered with to disturb the protective circuit, main electromagnet 18 will release its armature and cause it to fall into engagement with contact 36 and actuate the signal 40. The signal circuit may now be traced as follows: from the battery 41 current may be said to flow by wire 42, to signal 40, by wire 43, through switch lever (now closed) 33, and switch contact 34, wire 44, contact 39, drop shutter 38, wire 45, to contact 36, armature 35 and wire 46, returning to the opposite side of battery 41.
To restore the system to normal, switch lever 33 is moved 01? its associated contact, drop shutter 38 is manually restored, and the system is again at rest.
I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the detail arrangement of circuits herein shown and described, as it is manifest that variations therein may be resorted to, in the adaption of my invention to varying conditions of use, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
I therefore reserve the right to all such variations as properly fall within the scope of my invention and the terms of the followin" claims:
I-Iaving thus describe-d my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a system of the class described, a protective circuit, and an auxiliary circuit. controlled thereby, said protective circuit including a source of energy, a first electromagnet and a second electromagnet, said second electromagnet being adapted, when energized, to condition said auxiliary circuit to be energized upon a subsequent deenergization of the electromagnet first mentioned.
2. In a system of the class described, a protective circuit and an auxiliary circuit, the protective circuit including a source of energy and an electromagnet, a second electromagnet in said protective circuit having a shutter adapted to be released by actuation of its armature upon the closure of the protective circuit, thereby closing one break in said auxiliary circuit, and an alarm adapted to be operated upon the closure of a second break in series in said auxiliary circuit by said first named 'electromagnet.
3. In a system of the class described, a protective circuit including a source of energy and two electromagnets, arranged to control an alarm circuit comprising a second circuit serially including an armature and cotiperant contact member associated with one of said electromagnets, a shutter and cooperant contact member associated with the second electromagnet, said second electromagnet being adapted to be actuated to release said shutter upon the closure of said protective circuit.
4. In a system of the class described, a protective circuit including a source of energy and two electromagnets, arranged to control an alarm circuit comprising a second circuit serially including an armature and coiiperant contact member associated with one of said electromagnets, a shutter and cooperant contact member associated With the second electromagnet, said second electromagnet being adapted to be actuated to release said shutter upon the closure of said protective circuit, to close one break in said second circuit, thereby to prepare the said second circuit for the operation of a signal, upon the occurrence of a decrease of current flow in said protective circuit.
5. In an alarm system, a protective circuit, and an alarm circuit serially including a source of energy, a manually operable switch, an alarm signal, an armature controlled switch adapted to be closed upon retraction of its armature, and a drop shutter controlled switch adapted to be closed upon attraction of its armature, said last two mentioned switches being controlled by said protective circuit.
6. In a system of the class described, an alarm circuit comprising a signal and a source of energy, one conductor including one terminal of said signal, a source of energy and the armature of a main electromagnet in series connection with a second conductor comprising the coiiperant contact of said armature, a drop shutter and its cooperant contact, a manually operable device, and the second terminal of said signal.
7. In any alarm system, an alarm circuit having two breaks in series therein, and a protective circuit having means operated upon an increase of current flow for closing one of said breaks, said protective circuit also having means operated upon a subse: quent decrease of current flow for closing the second break to complete said alarm circuit.
