(No Model.)
JAMES J. ROSS, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE THREE RIVERS RAILWAY SUPPLY COMPANY, OF THREE RIVERS, MICHIGAN.
ALARM-SIGNAL.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 666,067, dated January 15, 1901.
Application filed March 26,1900. Serial No. 10,174. (No model.)
To ail whom it may concern" (shown in full lines, Fig.2) and includes the Be it known that I, JAMES J. ROSS, a citizen battery D, circuit-closing relay E, and the of the United States, residing at Detroit, in normally open breaks S and S.
the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, I" designates an auxiliary circuit which inhave invented certain new and useful Imcludes between the pointsaandbthebranches 55 provements in Alarm-Signals, of which the H and I, before described in connection with following is a specification, reference being the alarm-circuit,the battery and relayE,just had therein to the accompanying drawings. referred to, and the normally open break T.
The invention relates to certain improve- The several circuits and their arrangement IO ments upon the electric signal apparatus having been thus described, the operation of 60 shown and described in Letters Patent No. the mechanism is as follows: Upon the en- 522,431, which issued to me July 3, 1894; and trance of a train in the block A the trackit consists in the novel arrangement of the battery B therefor is short-circuited, the circuits, whereby but one battery and a less track-relay C out out, and its armature pernumber of contact-points are required to promitted to drop, thereby closing the nor- 65 d nce the desired results. mally open breaks J and S. The break K be- In the drawings, Figure 1 is a diagrammatic ing normally closed, the short-circuiting of View showing the general arrangement of the the track-battery B establishes the alarmcircuits and the electrical appliances, the circuit through its branch H, as plainlyindi- 2o alarm -circuit and its two branches being cated in Fig. 1, and the bell is caused to ring. 70 shown in full and broken lines, respectively. Upon the entrance of the train into the block A Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic view of the main from the block A the track-battery Bis shortcircnit, and Figs. 3 and 4. are similar views of circuited and the track-relay C out out. The the auxiliary circuit. armature of said latter relay drops and closes In the drawings thus briefly referred to the the normally open breaks S and M. The 75 reference-letters A A designate two trackbreak S having been closed upon the shortsections upon opposite sides of a crossing, circuiting of the battery B, the closing of the which are properly insulated in the usual break S establishes the main circuit through manner. the relay E and the two normally open breaks B Bare the track-batteries for the blocks S and S, as plainly indicated in the full lines, 80 described, and C O are the track-relays, pro- Fig. 2. Upon the passage of the train onvided, respectively, with armatures O and O tirely out of the block A into the block A the D represents the single battery common to relay 0 is again energized by its track-batall the circuits. tery, the breaksJ and S opened, and the aux- E is the locking-relay, and F represents the iliary circuit P is established through its 8 5 alarm-bell, which is located at the crossing. branch I, as indicated by the full lines in a The letter G designates the alarm-circuit, Fig. 4. This latter circuit is maintained unwhich includes the battery D, alarm-bell F, til the train passes entirely out of the block of any ordinary type, a normally-closed break A, when the relay E is deenergized, the break K, controlled by a switch in the form of an K closed, the track-relay O energized by its 90 armature Lof the circuit-closing relay E, and battery, and the breaks S and M opened. two branches H and I between the points a, The parts of the mechanism are thus restored and b. The branch H (shown in full lines, a to their initial position in readiness to signal Fig. 1) includes a normally open break J, conthe next train.
trolled by the armature of the track-relay C. It will be obvious from the description of 5 The branch I (illustrated in dotted lines in the mechanism that if a train should enter the same figure) includes the break M, northe insulated track-sections by way of the mally open, which is controlled by the armablock A the operation just described would ture of the relay C. be practically repeated, with the exception The letter P represents the main circuit that the auxiliary circuit would be estab- I00 lished through the branch H, as indicated in by the track-relays, and an auxiliary circuit Fig. 3, and the alarm-circuit through the branch I.
What I claim as my invention is- In an electric signal for railway-crossings,
the combination of an alarm-circuit having including the circuit-closing relay, a normally open break controlled by said latter relay, and having two branches each including a normally open break controlled by one of the track-relays.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
