Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,370, dated January2, 1872.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved umbrella-holder for attachment to the seats of buggies or other wagons, which shall be simple in construction, inexpensive in manufacture, and convenient in use, and which shall at the same time be so constructed that it may be readily adj usted to hold the umbrella inclined at any desired angle; and it consists in the construction and combination otA the various parts of the holder, as hereinafter more fully described.

A isthe base piece of the holder, which is inade with two arms projecting' horizontally, and at such a distance apart as tb receive the seat-board or other suitable support between them, to which they are secured by a handscrew, B, which passes up through the lower arm, and the end of which presses against the said board or support. The forward end of the screw B may have a pronged disk or button swiveled to it to rest against the said support and prevent it from being injured by the end of the said screw. To the upper end of the clamp A is attached, or upon it is formed, a short post, C, having a hole or socket lformed in its upper end to receive a round tenon formed upon the lower end of the post or rod l), where it is adjustably secured in place by a hand- Y screw, E, so that by simply loosening the screw E the post or rod D may be turned or adjusted as desired. Upon the upper end ofthe rod or post D is formed a semicircular cross-head, d1, which enters a slot in the lower end of the rod or post F. The cross-head d1 is made'with an upwardly-proj ectin g lu g, d2., through which and through the lower slotted end of the rod or post F passes the rivet, screw, or bolt that pivots the said rod or post Fito the rod 'or post D. The rod or post F is secured in place when ad'- justed by the hand-screw d3, which` passes through one or both parts of the slotted lower end ot" the'sa-id rod or post F and into arecess or hole formed in the cross-head d1, several recesses or holes being formed in the said crosshead to receive the said screw to enable the rod or post F to be secured at any desired angle. Upon the upper end ot' the rod or post F is formed, or to it is attached, a two-armed bar, G H, the arms of which project at right angles with the rod or post F and with each other. as shown in Figs. l and 2. To the outer end of the longer arm G is attached, or upon it is formed, a plate or jaw, I, which is concaved upon its inner side to lit upon the handle of the umbrella. J is a plate or jaw, the outer side of which is concaved to lit upon the umbrella-handle. In thelmiddle part of the side edge ot' the plate or j-aw J is formed a notch to receive and tit upon the arm G. The arin Cr is slotted longitudinally to receive a screw, K

which screws into the edge of the plate or jaw J to hold it close up to the said arm Gr. L is a hand-screw, which passes through a screwhole in the arm H parallel with the arm G, and i its forward end is swiveled to the plate or jaw J, so that by turning the screw L in one direction the jaw J will be moved outward to clamp the umbrella-handle between the jaws I and J, and by turning the said screw in the other direction the jaw J will be moved back to release the said handle.

By this construction the umbrella will be held secure-1y, and may be `conveniently ad justed or inclined in any direction as the dii rection of the wind may render necessary.
