PANEL STRUCTURE.
Specification of Letters fatent.
- Application filed April 5,1915. Serial No. 19,151.
bad to the accompanying drawings, forming I a part of this specifications j My lnvention relates to panel structures and is of particular-utilitywhen embraced I in Fig. 8.
Like parts are indicatedby similar char in the formation of counters. One of the features of my invention includes adjacent pilasters which carry clamping devices at their rear sides for forwardly pressing a panel into engagement with these pilasters.
The material of which the panel is formed is desirably translucent or clouded glass and is therefore fragile. the panel in a box, which box is therefore directly engaged by the panel holding clamping means, the box itself having some suitable panel holding agency such as a lining of putty upon its upright bottom. ,The-
counter is-provided with rails at its top and bottom, the forward rails engaging the glass panels and cooperatingwith the putty to hold them in place. v I
The invention hasother features and characteristics and will be"fullyfexglainedv by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred embodiment thereof and in which Figure 1 is a cross sectional view of a counter embracing the invention; Fig. 2 is a front view taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a viewon' line 3 30f Fig. 1; Fig. 4: is a view on line 4: 4 of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a view on line 5 5 of Fig. 2; Fig. 6 is a plan view of the counter with the top or counter shelf removed; Fig- 7 is a view on line 7 7 of Fig. 6; Fig. 8 is a view on a larger scale of a part of the structure as illustrated in Fig; l"; and Fig. 9' is a rear view of a part of thepilaster portion shown acters of reference throughout the different figures.
The counter or'table the form of translucent or glass, is supported upon the top -1, preferably in metal castings),
sirably arranged close to the inner or rear I desirably mount partin defining the same.

ters are removed a considerable distance from the front edge of the counter top. tach forward pilaster therefore desirably carries a forwardly projecting bracket 3 (preferably in the for engaging and supporting the front overhanging portion of the counter top 1. A metallic molding 4 is carried upon the bottom side of the'countertop and has a ledge 5 which'is received in recesses in the tops of brackets 3so that the ledge 5 and the tops form of a metal casting) of'thebrackets 3 are flush so as to engage the bottom of the counter top. The ledge 5 is screwed to the forward end of the bracket 3 instead of to the counter top. Each forward pilaster is desirably accompanied by a rear pilaster which is in the same plane therewith, such two pilasters intervening between adjacent counter sections and taking Each counter section includes forward and rear top rails 6 engaging the bottom of the counter top 1, the rails of a section being joined by a strut 7 screwed thereto. Adjacent alined rails 6 of. adjacentcounter sections arejoined by struts 8 that are screwed thereto and which are located where the pilasters are disposed. The pilasters are provided, at their mid portions, with insetting lugs 9, the forward and rear pilasters of each pair being joined by a strut 10 screwed to the lugs 9 thereof. The lower'portions of'the front and rear pilas- 'ters' of each pair are united by a strut 11 screwed'thereto. Each pilaster may termifoot carries a leveling bolt 18 accessible for operation through an opening 14 whereby side'of the pilaster. Each counter section includes forward and rear bottom rails 17 which rest upon the lugs 15 and are themselves beneath the lugs 16 whereby these botfto'm-rails are positioned, with respect to the pilasters. .Therailsl'? are of angular formation, being also preferably of metal, the horizontal branches of. these rails. resting upon the tops of'the feet 12. The front panel of each counter section'includes a wall 18 which is desirably in the form of a rectangular body of translucent or clouded plate glass which is disposed within a sheet metal pan 19 having outsetting sides thatv closely approach the edges of the glass panel 18, the .upright bottom of the pan that is beat its lower end. Each hind the glass being desirably faced with putty 20 to hold the glass and pan together. The bottom rails 17 have insetting horizontal ledges 17 the bottom sides of the boxes 19 resting upon the ledges 17 of the forward rail 17 instead of directly upon the feet 12 whereby the bottom edges of the pans have supporting engagementthroughout and are prevented from sagging. The forward rail 17 is provided with an insetting ledge 21 for engaging the front face of the glass panel near the lower part thereof, the upper front rail 6 of each panel desirably also similarly engaging the glass, the layer of putty 20 thus being cooperated with to pre vent separation of the glass and the glass holding pan 19. Each forward pilaster 2 carries two insetting threaded bolts 22, one located near the top of the pilaster and the other near the bottom thereof. Each bolt has a wing nut 23 adapted to be brought into engagement with a clamping plate 24 that may be clamped against the rear of the box 19 of adjacent panels, these plates being quite loose upon the bolts readily to adapt them to adjacent panels. The pilasters are provided with lugs 2 whose inner faces deline with the side faces of the pilasters angular pockets for receiving the rails 6 and locating them in position whereby the struts 8 do not have to be relied upon altogether for this purpose.
The spaces between the rear pilasters 2 are generally not filled in whereby ready access may be afforded to the spacing belowthe counter top and back of the front panels. There the spacing beneath the counter top is to be occupied by goods, an intermediate shelf 2& is mounted upon the shelf supporting rails 25 that extend lengthwise of the counter and which supporting rails are in turn supported by the insetting lugs 9 to which they are screwed. The rails 25 are desirably in the form of angle irons disposed to have one wall of each horizontal to support the shelving 24: and the other wall thereof vertical and placed outwardly to rest against the structure of the p'ilasters in the case of the rear rail 25 and against the upright bottoms of the glass holding pans 19 in the case of theforward rail 25. These Copies of thispatent maybe obtained'for vertical walls of the angle irons 25 are cut to protect the glass from the impact of objects carelessly thrown upon the inner shelvmg.
While I have herein shown and particularly described the preferred embodiment of my invention I do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction shown as changes may readily be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, but
having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following l. A panel structure including a number of spaced apart pilasters defining a plurality of adjacentpanel spaces, said pilasters being provided near their bottom ends with lower and upper lugs; and a bottom rail resting upon the lower lugs and disposed beneath the upper lugs.
2. A panel. structure including spaced apart pilasters V defining adjacent panel spaces; inwardly extending threaded bolts carried by the pilasters; clamping plates upon the bolts; clamping nuts upon the bolts adapted to be moved against the clamping plates; and panels in adjacent panel spaces held in place between rear portions of the pilasters and the clamping plates by the clamping nuts, said clamping plates being loosely disposed upon the bolts to enable the clamping plates readily to be adapted to adjacent panels with which each clamping plate may be engaged.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 29th day of March A. D.,
WILLIAM SIEBERT. Witnesses:
