FURNITURE-CASING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 13, 1916.
7 Application filed January 26, 1914. Serial No. 814,408.
To all whom it may concern:
: Be it known that I, ALBERT T. VVniss, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of'New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furniture- Casings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereonl My present invention relates to furniture and more particularly to metallic furniture of the type used in office and library, such as bookcases and filing cabinets, and it has for its object to provide a sheet metal casing or shell of simple and economical construction that can be assembledv or knocked down with ease, the improvements being more particularly directed to the construction and mode of attachment of a lateral wall of the casing.
1 A further object of the invention is to fit such a casing for use as a sectional unit for the so-called elastic or sectional furniture. 7 --To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts, all as will :be hereinafter more fully described, themdyel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective .view of a sheet metal casing constructed in accordance with and illustratmg one embodiment of my invention, the point of view being rearwardyFig. 2 is a similar enlarged but fragmentary view showing the rear wall detached and with a portion of the end wall removed; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective View of the back wall, the'point of view being from the inside; Fig. 4: is a vertical sectional view taken from front to rear, substantially on the line JP-4 of Fig. 6; Fig. 5 isa fragmentary horizontal section taken through an end wall and art of the back wall; Fig. 6 is a vertical 7 tion through an end wall taken substantially on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5, and Fig? is a fragmentary top planview of a corner of the casing.
Similar reference numerals throughout the several figures indicate the same parts. I have illustrated my improvements in the as embodied in a sectional furniture unit of a sha e known as a horizo ntal unit because or its greatest dimenragmentary sec-- sion being horizontal, which'type is often used as a single book shelf, but it will be understood that the invention' relates only t -o theshell and the interior may be fitted up as desired. In this view, 1 indicates the top wall, 2 the bottom wall and 3 the ends walls.
The first mentioned or horizontal walls.are both secured to the end walls, preferably by. means of extensions or tongues 1 that extend through the latter and receive wedges 5 (Figs; 2 and 5) all of which is described in detail and claimed by me as a separateinvention in another application filed Janumy 26, 1914, Serial N0. 814,407. The end walls have outstanding marginal flanges 6 covered by facing plates 7, secured by tie rods 8, as will also be disclosed in the said additional application.
At both front and rear, the bottom wall 2 is flanged downwardly at 9 and thence horizontally at 10 to constitute supporting elements so that the said wall is raised or spaced in the manner of a false bottom when the section is resting upon an adjoining section or surface.
The top wall is flanged upwardly at 11 at both its front and rear edges and thence horizontally or inwardly at 12 and upwardly again at 13 to constitute seats for the portions 91O of a similarly formed superposed section to rest upon and at the front this seat is preferably reinforced by an angle plate 11 welded or otherwise'secured to the flange 13 and to'the body of the wall 1. At the rear, the upstanding flange 13 is provided with a plurality of slots or openings 15 at its base in alinement with the bottom 'versely of the top and bottom walls, as
shown. in Fig. a. At its top edge, an in wardly or forwardly turned flange 19 has forwardly extending fiat projections 20 which cotiperate with the slots or openings 15 by a forward movement of the top edge of the back in 'adirec-tion transversely to the plane of the llatter- -and parallel with the plane of the top wall while the flange 19 passes into the seat l213 and is interposed between the latter and the superposed sec tion. It will thus be seen that to apply the back it is only necessary to interlock it at the bottom by an upward movementand then swing the top edge forwardly. \Vhenthe extensions :20 have passed through the slots 15 they may be secured in other ways so far as some features of my invention are concerned, but I prefer to give them a lateral twist, as clearly shown in Figs. -l and 6, as this a si p operation and at the same time tends to draw the parts more closely together. i I A lining wall 21 having offset flanges'22 at .top and bottom may be applied to the back ,wall with the said flanges held between the latter and the flanges 9 and 11, as shown in Fig. 4, and a filling 23 of heat insulating material supplied between the wall and its lining.
The ends of the back wall are preferably turned inwardly at 24 and thence flanged" laterally at 25 which last mentioned flanges are secured between the flanges of the end walls 3 and their facing plates 7, as will be dealt with in the said additional application heretofore mentioned. I I
I claim as my invention:
1. In a metallic furniture casing, the combination with-a wall provided with an outwardly projecting marginaL flange having openings therein, of an adjoining wall cooperating therewith and having an inwardly turned flange parallel with the first mentioned wall provided with extensions passing through the openings in said first mentioned flange and secured therein. a 2. In a metallic furniture casing, the combination with a wall having a marginal flange thereon proceeding outwardly and thence inwardly parallel with the wall and thence outwardly again, said last mentioned portion being provided with slots, of an adjoining wall cooperating therewith and having an inwardly turned flange superposed upon the said inwardly turned portion of the first 1 mentioned flange and provided with extensions passing through the slots in the latter and secured therein. v
3. In a metallic furniture casing for sectional furniture, the combination with a horizontal wall having a marginal flange turned vertically and thence inwardly in a horizontal direction and thence vertically again to provide a seat for the wall of an adjoining section, said seat being spaced from its said carrying Wall. v
4. In a metallic furniture casing for sectional furniture, the combination with a horizontal wall having a marginal flange turned vertically and thence inwardly in a horizontal direction and thence =vertioally 5. In a metallic 'furniturebasing; the com-I bination with two opposite: parallel walls respectively provided withbutwardly, pro
jecting marginal flanges, one of which has openings therein, of an intermediate lwall having a flange at one side adapted to interlock with that on the other of said first mentioned walls by a lateral movement in a direction in the plane of said intermediate wall and having inwardly projecting extensions at the other side adapted to' enter the open-. ings in the flange of the opposite wall by an inward movement in a direction transversely of the plane ofthe intermediate wall and to be secured therein.-
6. In a metallic furniture casing, the combination with two oppositeparallel walls respectively provided with outwardly projecting margmal flanges, one of which proceeds outwardly and thence inwardly and finally outwardly 'again, the last mentioned portion being provided with openings, of an intermediate wall having a flange at one side adapted to interlock with that on the other of said first mentioned walls b movement in a direction in, theip ane of said intermediate wall and an inwardly projecta lateral I ing flange at the other side arranged to lie against the inwardly proceeding portion. 'of the flange of the opposite wall and provided with extensions adapted to enter the openings in the adjacent portion of said flange by an inward movement in a direction transversely of the plane of the intermediate wall and to be secured therein.
ALBERT 'r. WEISS.
