To all whomc't mag/onccm: c 4
Be it known that I, ALBERT jLorTsGAAR- DEN, citizen of the United States, residing at Powell, in the county of lPark yandfState of Wyoming, have invented certain new and useful AImprovements in DoorfClosers, of which the following is a specication:
My present invention hasj relation` to spring-actuated means for closing hinged oors.
The object of the invention is `to provide a simple, inexpensive and easily installed d evice, designed more` particularlyfor use 'in combination with a screen door, at theouter side thereof, and constructedl and arranged in ysuch manner that the spring is 4put under tension by the opening of thedoor, and serves when the door isthe door.y Y a Other objects andadVantages of the invention will'be fully understoodv from the following description and claims when the plane through the spring and between the arms of the device and the door.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
The door 1 may be and l preferably is of conventional construction,
5 also be observed that the arm 7 is provided closed, to exert a ,o leverage against and thereby promptlyclose K is suitably secured on and fis 1 hinged in` the ordinary ywell known man-ner to the cas-` with aninner` end portion 10 which extends beyond the pivot point 8 and is constructed with aiview to bringing up against the outer edge of the arm 6,-therebyfobviating the possibility of the arms 46 and'7 being alined and the spring located4 in improper position on the door.
.In the present 'and' preferred embodiment of my inventionand for `the vsake of attaining lightness, of the arms .6 and 7 is formed of a single piece of sheet-metal bent upon itself with the bight 11 of the bend outermost or remote from the door as shown. The outer end portions of the arms are bifurcated tov straddle the flanges 5 of their respective brackets 3, 4', and the inner end portion of .the arm 6 is bifurcated forthe reception and play of the extended end portion 10 of the arm 7.
One end of the spring 9 is connected `in any approved manner to the outer side of the door 1, and the other end of the sprinv' a nut 12. The sai nut 12 receives a threaded bolt 13 which takes through one in the bight of the arm 7 and has its head 15 opposed to the outer side ofthe said bight. The nut 12 and bolt 13, arranged as stated', constitute a highly efficient regulating means for the spring as will be readily o appreciated when it is stated that mere turning of the bolt 13 will be attended by tightening or loosening of the spring according to the direction in which the bolt is turned. The plurality of holes 14 is provided in order that the spring may be'positioned as various conditions require relatively to the arm7.
In the practical-use of my novel device, it will be manifest that openingvof thedoor 1 will be attended'by flexing of the connected arms G and 7 and expansion of the spring .9, and that consequently when the opened door is released the spring by contracting to its normal state will operate to promptly return the arms 6 and 7 to their normal positions and by so doing will securelyclose the door; f
also, that normally the spring-controlled device will serve to yieldingly hold the door in closed position as is desirable.
The arrangement of my improvement at the outerside o f the door and adjacent to the hinged edge thereof, is materially advantageous inasmuch as it precludes the poscheapness and strength, eachy of a series of apertures 14 sibility of the improvement interfering with the usual manipulation of the door.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A springeactuated door-closing device, comprising brackets adapted for connection to a door casing and a door, respectively; said brackets having outwardly extending flanges, an arm formed of a strip of sheet-metal bent upon itself and having a bifurcated outer end portion receiving and pivoted to the door-casing bracket, an arm formed of a strip of sheet-metal bent upon itself and having a bifurcated outer end portion receiving and pivoted to the iange of the door bracket; the said arms being pivoted together adjacent to their inner ends, and one arm having an inner extended end portion movable in a bifurcation of the other and adapted to bring up against the back edge of such other, a retractile spring adapted at one end for connection to a door, and a connection between the other end of said spring and the arm complementary to the door-bracket; said connection being ar- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for ranged in an aperture in the bight of the arm.
2. A spring-actuated door-closing device, comprising brackets adapted for connection to a door casing and a door, respectively, an arm formed of a strip of sheet-metal bent upon itself and pivoted at its outer end to one bracket, an arm formed of a strip of sheet-metal bent upon itself and pivoted to the other bracket; the said arms being pivoted together adjacent to their inner ends, and one arm having an inner extended end portion movable in a bifurcation of the other and adapted to bring up against the back edge of such other, a retractile spring adapted at one end for connection to a door, and a connection between the other end of the spring and one arm; said connection being arranged in an aperture in the bight of the arm.
In testimony whereof l affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT T. LOFTSGAARDEN.
