Description
PATENT QEETCE.

IMPROVEMENT INLAsTs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,338, dated January 2, 1872 ;V antedated December 16, 18'7'1.
To all fwhom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN C. TOOT, of Clear- A field, in the county of Gleariield and State of means for fastening the instep-block in its seat 011 top of the foot-block of'a shoeina-lrers last and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the fastening-button, now to be described.
This fastening device or button consists of a rotating cylindrical body, a, through which the pivot-screw b passes, and the curved arm c, which extends from the highest part ot the wall e of the countersink in the top of the body a in a radial line outward and slightly upward, its under edge d taking the curve of the upper end h of the instep-block. The upper end of the journal a is beveled in such a manner that, while the countersink has little or no wall at one side, it has quite ahigh wall on the other. The letter A of the drawing designates the foot-block, and B the instepblock of the last. The brad which secures the lower end of the instep-block is lettered m. The button C is pivoted to the foot-block by the screw b passing vertically into the upper face 'u thereof in such a manner that the cylindrical exterior of the journal a shall project somewhat beyond the straight angular corner u of the foot-block toward the adjacent edge "w of the instep-block, in which a circular recess, a, is formed to receive the journal a, the said recess being made of the proper size to lit neatly the exterior of the saidjournal. When the arm c of the button C is thrown forward upon the instep-block it will eifectually pref vent vertical movement, while the engagement of the projectingportion of the journal a, with the recess a in the edge of the instepblock, will prevent lateral movementbetween the two blocks of the last. Vhen it is required to separate the blocks, in order to get the last out of a boot or shoe, the arm c is turned to the rear. This will bring the bevel of the countersink toward the recess a, and it will then be found that the beveled edgezhas the same inclination as the bottom s of the recess in the top ot' the foot-block, in which the instepblock is seated. obstructions to the free passage of the instepblock, which may now be drawn out readily from between .the foot-block and the leather of the boot or shoe.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combina-tion, with the foot-block A and the instep-block B, recessed at a, of the button C, constructed with the journal a and the beveled top z, substantially as specied.
In testimony that he claims the above he has hereunto subscribed his name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN C. TOOT.
