a citizen of the. United States, residing in- Ilartford, in the county of Hartford and State of connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writingr Machines, of which the following: is a specification.
This invention. relates to the case-shift mechanism of typewriting machines, and particularly to keys which lock: and unlock the case-shift mechanism.
In the Underwood typewritiiur machine, to which my improvements are illustrated as applied, a shiftkey is provided at the left-hand side of the keyboard, for the usual purpose of shifting the u'lechanism to capi tal printing position; and at the right-hand side of the keyboard. it is custon'iary to provide a similar shift-key. which upon being depressed. will not only shift the mechanism to capital printing positiolnluit will also look it in such position, a release of said lock being effected by depressing the shift-key at the left-hand-side. oi. the kevhoard.
It is found desirable in practice. thatthere should he not only a key at the left, but also one at the right of the keyboard for effect ing: a temporary shift of the mechanism to capital printing position, so that the operator may depress, by either his left hand or his righthand, a capital shift-kev. and so that upon releasing either of said kevs. the mechanism will shift back to its normal position.
The object of this present invention is to provide for the purposes mentioned. a mech anism, not only simple and inexpensive; but
i also extremely compact: adaptable for use in connection with existing machines with little or no change in the standard parts thereof; neat. in that the operating connections thereof do not encumber the plainly visible'parts of the keyboard or key levers; and reliable in that it is certain in operation.

To make it possible to lock down the right-hand shift key, there is provided a separate kc v whit h is mounted upon the trip to lift the, same t inellective position so that it cannot restraii the latch or look from catching over the pin on said shift-key lever. This trip, which may be in the form of a lever arm. is ca] able of limited movement upon the main sh ift-key lever; serving in its normal, depressed position to render the latch ineffective. and also serving when lifted by depressi m oi. a finger key to.-release the latch to enable it to catch over the pin. The key for this trip also serves to shift the platen. The lock or la eh for the shift lever may be of the identical style and mounting common in the Unlerwood typewriting machine; that is t( say, may be an upstancling one-armed swing-controlled hook. To adapt the presert invention to use in connection with such a latch, the lever which carries the foil ir stop, (for interposition in the path of the hook when a temporary shift, only, of ti 1e platen is desired) is of novel C0115t1'nCti(n in that it is pivoted at an intermediate point ther of to the right hand shift lever so that tiepression of the lock key causes the stop or foil controlled thereby, to be lifted above and out of the path of a cooper: ting pin or shoulder on the latch arm when the lock is to be rendered operative; and so that, although the stop or foil is so lifted, the lock keyitself, is depressed in the usual manner to cause the foil-carrying lever, as soon as it sets the foil, to pick up, and carry with it, the shift lever on which it is mounted. The lock lever is pivoted to the shift lever at a point of the latter sufficiently removed from the front of the machine to cause it to be substantially concealed frun front view, and it is so (IODStl'llCtl-Ed and positioned as to be free from injury and interference. In mechanism constructed according to the present invention, the pin or detent on the shift lever, which cooperates with the latch, may also serve not only as a means for camming hack the latch to permit the latch to pass the pin for engagement over the same; but ma serve as a stop which, by cooperation witi the foil or interponent, determines the normal position of the foil lever on the shift lever; and may also serve as a stop, to limit the throw of the lock key lever on the shift lever when the lock key is depressed, thereafter causing the two levers to move as a unit in' the shifting operation.
The latch may be released by the means usual in the Underwood typewriting machine, a pin upon the left-hand key lever engaging a cam, and the latter fixed on a rock shaft which extends across the machine, and carries the latch heretofore mentioned, whereby said latch is rocked away a m1 releases the right-hand shift-key lever, so that the same returns to nor a1 position together with the platen.
Thus by a simple provision, the operator is enabled to shift the platen temporarily and quickly up or down, with either the right or left hand, while at any time he may c. the platen up for writing a line of ainpitals, and release the same by the Yigsual .CF'V.

Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view in side perspective of the parts shown in Fig. 3, together with the left-hand shift key and the mechanism controlled thereby for unlodring frame by means of a roller 8 which rides' along the rail as the platen has its. letterfeed movement. The rail with the platen is shifted by means of vertical extensions 9 and 10 on the shift levers 11 and 12 respectively; the platen framebeing griiled in its shifting movement by arms 14 on a. rock shaft 13 mounted in the carriage frame.
The key levers 1]. and 12, which are fulcrumed on the shaft 15, are held normally elevated as by springs 16, and are providedv at their forward ends with the usual keys 17 and 18, one shift-key being at each side of the keyboard.
Either key 17 or 18 may be used to shift the platen to upper-case position for the writmg of capitals or other upper-case characters. In the present invention, however, the platen is notlocked in upper-case position by depression of either of these keys; whichever of these two keys is operated must be held depressed by theoperator, and upon its release, the platen assumes its normal or lower-case position.
The advantage of this feature is that occa-- sion for temporary shift may occur when one. or the other of the operators hands may be more conveniently used for actuating the shift lever.
One of the shift levers, however, to wit, lever 11, is provided with means whereby it may at will be locked in upper-case position i for permanent or sustained use in that position. This locking means is normally inoperative; that is to say, is i'no rative when the shift lever 11 is actuated y its ke 17.
For operating the lever 11 when the p atom is to e locked in upper-case position, the lever 11 carries a second key 19. The key 19 is directly mounted on a short lever 20,- ivoted at 21. to the shift lever 11. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a shiftable platen, of a shift lever, a lock therefor, means for automatically shifting said lock to a predetermined position at each actuationfiof the shift lever, a second lever pivoted at an intermediate point thereof to said shift lever, a key carried by one arm of saidsecond lever, a stop carried by the other arm of said" second lever, a projection on the shift lever, a spring for normally holding said stop-carrying lever against said projection in such angular position on the shift leverthat operation of the latter to effect temporary shift of the platen causes said stop to be interposed in the path of the look after said lock has been so shifted, so .as to render the I lock inoperative, means whereby the stopcarrying lever may be held in driving con nection with the shift lever in such angular position thereon as to withhold the stop from the path of the look when the shift lever is operated for a sustained shift of the platen, and means for throwing the lock when the stop is so withheld from the path thereof.
