EXERCISING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1?, 12117.
Application filedJune 20, 1916. Serial No. 104,766.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES A. BOYD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Margaretville, in the county of Delaware and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Exercising Devices, of which the following is a,'specification.
This invention relates to improvements in exercising devices and has particular application to a leg exerciser.
In carrying. out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide an exercising device of the class described which will be found especially useful to promote calisthenics for the development of the muscles of the lower limbs.
It is also my purpose to provide a device of the type set forth which will embody in its construction, among other features, vertical standards spaced apart in parallelism and a block slidably mounted between the standards and adapted to be held at any desired elevation and equipped with an outwardly projecting horizontally disposed tongue adapted to be kicked by the user to determine the height of the kick whilev developing the muscles.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawing;
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of an exercising device constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view therethrough.
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional View through the same.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, 1, l designate vertical standards suitably spaced apart in parallelism and held in spaced relation by means of blocks 2 arranged between the standards at the ends thereof. Connected to the respective blocks 2 are transverse bars 3 arranged across the rear edges of the standards 1 and adapted to be fastened to a wall or other support to hold the standards in upright position. 5 designates a block arranged between the standards 1 and having the opposite sides thereof formed with vertical grooves 6 that receive the respective standards so as to hold the blocks in proper position between the standards and permit the blocks to be moved vertically between the standards. Connected to the block is one end of a chain 7 and secured to the other end of the chain is a pin 8. Formed in the standards 1 are openings 9 spaced apart vertically and the openings in one standard aline with the respective openings in the other standard and these alining openings are adapted to interchangeably receive the pin 8 so that the latter may be secured below the block 5 to hold the block in adjusted position. Pivotally connected to the front side of the block 5 is one end of a tongue 10, while rigidly secured to said side of the block above the tongue 10 is a lug 11 and interposed between the lug 11 and the inner end of the tongue is an expansion spring 12 acting to hold the tongue 10 normally in horizontal position.
The standards 1. 1 are of any desired height say, for instance, five feet and may be secured to a wall or other support with the lower ends thereof at a distance of about three feet from the floor. The standards 1 may be graduated to indicate the height from the floor to the respective graduations and in the use of the device the block 5 is adjusted to the desired elevation and the pin 8 passed through the alining openings below the block to hold the latter in proper place. The user may now kick the tongue 10 to develop the muscles of the lower limbs and whenever the tongue 10 is struck by the foot, such tongue swings upwardly against the action of the spring 12 to relieve the impact.
While I have herein shown and described the preferred form of my invention byway of illustration, I wish it tobe understood that I do not limit or confine myself to the precise details of construction herein described and delineated, as modification and variation may be made within the scope of the claims and without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. An exercising. device of the class described comprising vertical standards spaced apart in parallelism, a block slidably mounted between said standards, means for holding said block at the desired elevation, and a horizontal tongue pivoted to said block scribed comprising vertical standards spaced apart in parallelism, a block slidably mount,- ed betvveen said standards, means for holding said block at the desired elevation, a
horizontal tongue pivoted to said block and capable of swinging movement, and a spring 16 acting upon said tongue to holdthe latter in normal position and restore the same to such position.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
CHARLES ALUERSON BOYD.
