To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, EDWARD A, DAY and ALEXANDER W; WHITE, citizens, respectively, 0f the United States and ,Canada, and residents, respectively, of Oda'nah, in the county of Ashland and State of Wisconsin, and Robertville, in the county of Gloucester,'Province of New Brunswick, and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and Improved Amusement Apparatus, of which the following is a full clear, and exact description.

This invention relates generally to the class of amusement apparatusand has particular reference to a device which is designed to test the skill of a contestant, in

maintaining his equilibrium during the operation of the same.

The invention primarily contemplates the provision of an apparatus which when in use, closely simulates the usual log rolling contests, which at present consist in attempts of the contestants to balance themselves on a log placed in a body of water.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which is comparatively simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and which is strong and durable in its structure.

With the above recited and other objects in view, some of which will. appear more clearly as the nature, purpose and operation of the invention are better understood, reference is had to the following specification, the appended claims and the accompanying drawings, in which;

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, a supporting frame is provided which includes a base comprising a longitudinal beam 10 mounted on transverse beams 11. A pair of vertical standards 12 are secured to the longitudinal beam 10, the same being preferably constructed of tubula-r pipe sections received at their lower ends by the members 13 which are secured to the longitudinal beam 10. A cylindrical member14 simulating a log is yieldably supported at its opposite ends by the standards 12' annular end plates 15 each provided with trunnions 16 which are secured by suitable fastening elements 17 to the opposite ends of the cylindrical member. The trunnions are adapted to bereceived by the annular bearing members 18 having a depending apertured lug 19 which is received between the apertured furcations of a bifurcated bracket 20 through which a pivot pin or bolt 21 is passed for connecting the bearings and bracket together. The brackets 20 are each provided with a depending circular shank 22 which is designed to be telescopically re ceived by the upper extremities of the standards 12. In order to provide means for yieldably supporting the cylindrical member 14 from the standards, a coiled expansion spring 23 is arranged within the standards and the upper end of said springs bear directly against the lower ends of the shanks 22.

In use of the apparatus, the contestants mount the cylindrical members 14 and at tempt to rotate the same with their feet while in a standing position, at the same time endeavoring to maintain their equi librium. The yicldable body let closely simulates the action of a log placed in a body of water, in that the pivotal connection between the bearing members 18 and the brackets 20, permit of independent vertical movements of the opposite ends of said cylindrical body.

Where the cylindrical member 1 1 is dis posed an appreciable distance above the ground or floor level, it is desirable for the safety of the contestants, to arrange therebeneath a safety net 25. As illustrated said safety net is supported on the upper ends of the vertical standards 26, the lower ends of which are received by the members 27 which are secured adjacent the opposite ends of the transverse beam 11. Brace rods 28 are provided for each standard 26, the same being secured respectively in the eyes 29 and 30 which are provided on the standards and the transverse beams. The opposite ends of the brace rod are reversely threaded as at 31 and receive the turn buckles 32 for the purpose of adjustments. In connection with the device any suitable platform or platforms may be used and arranged at the opposite ends of the cylindrical member 14 together with suitable ladders for the purpose of gaining access thereto.

While there has been illustrated and described a single and preferred embodiment of the invention, no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details which may be varied in so far as they -fall Within the scope and meaning oi? the appended claims.

'VVe claim:

1. An amusement apparatus including a cylindrical member and vertically yieldable means for rotatably supporting the same at its opposite ends to permit of independent vertical movements of the extremities thereof, whereby the cylindrical member will simulate the action of a log in 'Water.

2. In an apparatus of the characterdescribed, a substantially cylindrical member having trunnions at the opposite ends thereof, a frame including vertical standards,

brackets yieldably carried by the upper ends bearing members, as and for the purpose specified.
