Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 17, 1917.
Application filed October 11, 1915, Serial No. 55,345. Renewed January 31, 1917. Serial No. 146,024.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn D. COUGHLIN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Dorchester, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toggles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toggles and has for its object the production of a device of this character which will be simple in construction and very eflective in its opera tion.
The invention consists in a metal plate having struck therefrom midway of its length a locking tongue adapted to be jammed upon the end of a flexible member positioned in a transverse groove in the face of said plate opposite said tongue.
The invention further consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be fully understood by reference to the description of the drawings and to the claim hereinafter given.
Of the drawings:
Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a toggle embodying the principles'of the present invention.
Fig. 2 represents a plan of the same.
Fig. 3 represents an end view of the same.
Fig. 4 represents a transverse section of the same on line H on Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 represents a rear elevation of the plate showing the tongue struck therefrom, and
Fig. 6 represents a longitudinal section of the same on line 6-6 on Fig. 5.
Similar characters designate like parts throughout the several figures of the drawm s.
in the drawings, 10 is a thin metal plate having struck therefrom midway of its length a tongue 11. The portions of said plate 10 on opposite sides of said tongue 11 are provided with the alined depresslons 12 extending transversely of said plate.
One end of a flexible member 13 is positioned in said depressions 12 and then the tongue 11 is forced downwardly thereon causing a bend in the flexible member as indicated at 14, thereby locking the member 13 to the plate 10. When the flexible mem ber 13 has been secured to the plate 10 in the manner described, its center will be in the same plane with the center of the thickness of said plate so that any strain upon the flexible member will pull the edge 15 of the plate 10 against the material in connection with which the toggle is to be used, while retaining the side faces of the plate parallel with the center line of said flexible member.
The depressions 12 are formed in the plate 10 at the same time that the tongue 11 is struck therefrom.
The entire device is constructed in a simple manner from a minimum number of parts, and is readily assembled.
The material forming the depressions 12 and the tongue 11 may be compressed into the flexible member 13 to any desired decenter of the plate and opposite from thedepression, whereby when a rope is placed in the depression and the tongue forced down, the toggle will be held firmly upon the rope.
Signed by me at 4 Post Office Sq., Boston, Mass, this 2nd day of October, 1915.
JOSEPH D. GOUGHLIN. Witnesses:
