miti-EM STATES PATENT @Flillltlm WILLIAM H. UMBEL, OF UNIONTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
RAILROAD-TIE.
Application led May 23, 1916.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that l, VILLIAM H. UMBEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Uniontown, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain useful Improvements in RailroadTies, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had therein to the accomw panying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in railroad ties, one object of the invention being the provision of a metallic tie which dispenses with the use spikes and bolts for attaching the rail thereto, and which is provided with a plurality of removable chair blocks which are held in rail engagement by wedging members which will permit the rail the necessary contraction and expansion and at the same time will lock the same firmly in place.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a tie of this character which is thoroughly efficient and practical in use, and which is comparatively inexpensive.
ln the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete tie, one of the block chairs at the nearer end of the tie being separated from the rail.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through one end of the tie with the rail locked.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the blocks per se.
Figs. 4l, 5 and 6 are detail views of various parts.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1G designates the body of the tie which has formed integral therewith the attaching plates 11, each one of which is provided with a transverse channel 12 for the reception of the supporting I beam 13, which is extended at right angles to the body of the tie as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, bolts or any-other means being provided for attaching the I beams to the proper supporting structure for the tie.
The tie as shown, is a channel member and is provided with the two transverse partitions 14 which provide the two open end compartments 15 and the center compartment 16, said center compartment being provided with the drain outlets 17.
Specification of Letters Patent.

serial no. 99,358.
Upon the upper edges as at 18, are recesses for the reception of the base' 19 of the rail 20. lDisposed through the walls of the tie body below and centrally of the rail base receiving recess, is the tie bolt 20, while adapted to fit within the compartment at opposite sides of the tie bolt and also the two elliptical projections or bosses 21 of the tie, are the blocks 22, each one of which is constructed similarly and is provided at the inner ends thereof with the recesses 23 for engaging the bosses and the transverse recess 24, that accommodates the tie bolt. Each one of the blocks carries the covering portion and the rail plate 26.
"lach block is further provided with a transverse wedge receiving channel 27 which is preferably rectangular in cross section and which is adapted to aline with the respective slots 28 and 29 which permit the tapering wedge 30 to be inserted and thus act to move the block toward the rail to clamp the chair portion thereof tightly in place and thus secure the rail to the tie without piercing the same or without the use of spikes or bolts. A cotter 32 is employed to hold the wedge in place.
From the foregoing description, it is evident that with a rail tie and chair constructed according to and embodying the present invention, the rail will be properly supported and be permitted the necessary contraction and expansion intermediate of its ends or at the joint, and with a tie constructed according to this invention, an eX- ceedingly rigid and durable tie is produced.
What l claim as new is:
i1 railroad tie, including a body open at its ends and top, two blocks removably mounted in each open end, cooperating means carrie-Tl by both blocks and the tie for limiting the inner movement thereof and for holding the blocks from upward movenient, coperating wedging means carried by the blocks and tie body for holding the blocks from longitudinal movement, a rail chair provided by each block, and a cover for the tie body carried by each block.
In testimony whereof l affix my signature.
WILLlAM H. UMBEL.
