To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE H. GIDDINGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ilion, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Split Safety- Posts and Indicators for Double-Barrel Guns, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improvement 1914, Serial Number 821,9 l7 and which was allowed March 25, 1915.

The invention relates especially to that portion of the mechanism connected with the safety post and indicator, and cooperat ing with the hammer and the sear.

The device relates to double-barrel guns and the objects of the invention are to allow one hammer to be cooked and made safe while the other side or hammer is uncooked and off safe. This .is desirable in (iase one side of the mechanism is out of order, permitting the operation of the other side and use of the other barrel, and still permit operation of the safety device. This also enables the person using the gun and who wishes to use but one barrel to make the other barrel safe thereby making certain that the use of one barrel will not jar off the other as is sometimes the case when the notches'become worn. This feature of my device I term an emergency safe. These objects are secured by forming the safety post and buttons in two parts, thereby forming a split safety post, while the position of the buttons act as a safety indicator.

The invention also consists of the novel features of construction hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings in which:

Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the right hand lock plate with hammer and sear attached, and with right hand safety post and button in forward or off safe position.

Fig. 2 is a similar view with the hammer half way back to cocked position, the post and button being also in half position.

Fig. 3 is a similar view, the right hand hammer being all the way back and the right hand post and button being in safe position, with the left hand post and button remaining in forward or olf safe position, as in F igs. 1 and 2.

Fig. 4: is an inverted plan view of the tang showing the springs and split safety post both in forward position.

Fig. 5 is a detail section on the line 5-5 of .Fig. 1.

Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the springs, safety post and button, one button and post being in forward position and the other being in rear or safe position.

Fig. 8 is an end view of the two buttons fitted together.

In these drawings 1 indicates the gun frame and 2 the tang which is provided with a suitable slot 3 over which the button works and upon its under side and to the rear of the slot the tang is provided with notches &. A look plate 5, hammer 6 and sear 7 are also provided. Instead of a solid post the post is split longitudinally thereby forming right and left hand posts 8 adapted to work side by side. Each post has its spring 9 and each spring is provided with a roller 10, these rollers cooperating with the notches 4 as indicated in the drawings. The button 11 is also split longitudinally, each half of the button having a shank 12 which works in the slot 3 and each spring 9 is suitably slotted to receive a reduced portion 12 of one of the shanks 12, as shown most clearly in Figs. 4, 5 and 6.

From Fig. 2 it will be noted that the right hand hammer is half way back, that the right hand safety post, its spring, its roller and the right hand half of the safety button are also half way back to safe position, and that in this position the right hand safety post is engaged by the upturned rear end portion of the scar, and that the rear end of the sear prevents further rearward movement of the button and post.

This is due to the fact that when the hammer is in this position a cam 6 which is formed upon the hammer adjacent the hammer notch 6 bears upon the forward end of the sear and holds it elevated at the rear end until the hammer is entirely back when the cam 6 will clear the forward end of the sear thereby permitting the rear end to drop so that the post will clear it, or will pass into position immediately above it, p reventing the rear end of the sear from rising i While the button is in safe position, the forward end'of the sear engaging the hammer notch 6". This cam projection 6 is an essential and important part of the present improvement as it is this feature which prevents thepost being moved back when the hammer is half cocked.

With the solid safety post with; one ham mer down it is impossible to put the safe on the side with thehammerdcocked, dueto the sear on the uncooked side being higher at the rear end than the one that is cooked, but with thesafetyposts acting independent of each other, one hammer can be cooked and made safe, while the other side is uncooked and off safe. a

It will also benoted that in addition to having a safety devicel have-also an indicator of the position occupied by each ham,- mer, as pressure of ,the thumb on thebutton will show. the positionof either hammeryfor if the button will not go back .to safe posi- I tion it, showsconclusivelythat the hammers are not cocked. If one half of thebutton will move ,back it will show exactly the position of one hammer with respect to the other. The .advantages and operation of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which it relates.

What I claim is 1.
