UNITED swam I cnARLEs HQMANN, oF-nELrnomo,
h REVOLVER.
Be it known that I, GHARLEs-I-LMANN, a
. citizen of the United States, residing at 'Delta, in the county of Fulton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Revolvers, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
My invention relates to improveinents'in firearms, partlcularly wlthreference to lock devices for the hammer to preventaccidental discharge of the fire arm, and alsowith reference to means for cooking the hammer, my said improvements being particularly adapt-' ed for use in revolvers but also adapted for use in other fire arms, and the said invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
I notches 4 In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is partly an elevation and partly a longitudinal sectional view of a revolver of the hammerless type provided with my improved locking and cocking devices. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a revolver of the hammer type provided with my improved locking and cooking devices. 7
The hammer 1 of the fire arm, which is here shown as provided with a pin 2 but which may be of any suitable construction, is provided in its lower edge, which is semicircular and concentric with its pivot 3, with 5 providing shoulders 67. The usual spring 8 which is fastened at one end, a at 9, inthe stock, has its free end engaged wlth a notch 10 in the rear side of the ham- 1 v mer near its lower end. In the front side ofthe said hammer, at a point about opposite the notch 10, is a notch 11.
My improved. locking device 12 for the hammer is in the form of a bell crank providing arms 13-44:. Said arm 13 which extends forwardly in the stock under the hammer, isprovided, on its upper side near its front end, with a shoulder 15 to engage the notches l5 and bear against either of the shoulders 67. The pivot of the hammer locking device is indicated at 16. The arm 14 is provided at its lowerend with a'forwardly extending finger piece 17 which operates in and extends from the front side of an opening 18 in the front wall of the hollow handle portion of the stock. A spring 19, which is here shown as substantially U-shaped, has one of its arms secured in the stock and its other arm bearing under 'the front end of the arm 13 of the hammer V Specification of Letters Ifatent. Application filed May 23, 1907. 7 Serial No. 375,285.
Tatented Dec. 15,19Q8. I
The operation of my invention is as follows: In order to cock the fire arm,'the trigleased to discharge the fire arm by pressing a finger against the finger piece 17 to cause the shoulder 15 of the locking device 12 to disengage the notch 4 and the shoulder 6 of the hammer, as will be understood. It will be observed that the shoulder 15 of the looking device by engagement with the shoulder of the hammer prevents movement of the latter in either direction until after said A spring 26,
locking device has been pressed to disengage said shoulder 15 from its hammer.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is r I In a fire arm having a hollow stock, the combination of a hammer having cocking notches and also having a front notch, a spring to actuate the hammer when the latter is released, a locking device for the hammer comprising a bell-crank having a horizontal arm extending from the stock, and a vertical arm, said horizontal arm extending under the hammer and having a shoulder on its upper side and said vertical arm having a forwardly extending finger piece protruding from the stock, a spring acting on said bell crank to normally engage the shoulder of the horizontal arm thereof with one of the cooking notches of the hammer, and a cooking mechanism for the hammer comprising a pivotally mounted trigger and CHARLES H. MANN.
