Description

tnonconnn, or s'r. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
HAT-PROTECTOR.
naaasaa;
, Specification of Letters Patent. I
Patented Apr. 10, 191W.
, Application filed September 2, 1915. Serial-No. 48,717.
To, all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEON'COHEN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and usefullmproveinents in Hat-Protectors, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof My invention relates to improvements in hat protectors, wherein two covers are employed, one to overlie the crown and brim of the hat and the other placed within the crown and. underlying the brim.
The object of my invention is to produce an economical and sightly protection for hats, which snugly conforms thereto both inside and outside, to the end that soiling by dust or handling is obviated; and further to provide a protector having the abovevcharacteristics and by which the material of the hat may be determined Without removing the protector. O I
,With theabove object in view, my invention consists in certain novel details of the construction and arrangement, of parts, hereinafter fully set-forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows in plan a hat provided with my improved protector, a portion of the outer protector being broken away; and
- Fig. 2 is a side elevation, a portion of which is sectional and taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Referring by numerals to the accompany 1 ing drawings:
5 designates a hat crown and 6 the brim thereof. The hat shown is constructed of straw braid and shaped by being pressed between blocking dies, but it is to be under stood that the material designated and the shape shown may vary. I
' The numeral 7 designates the crown portion of a protector element which fits into the hat crown and which has an integral outstanding flange or brim 8 whose margin 9 is brought around to overlie the margin of the brim of the hat and is secured thereto by stitching as shown at 10.
The numeral 11 designates the crown portion of a protector element'which fits over the hat crown and which has a flange or brim 12 arranged to overlie the upper surface of the hat brim and of substantially the same dimensions as the hat brim, and has at its free margin astrip 13 secured to the protector brim by stitching.
' By preference the protectors are constructed of impervious material such as sheets of wax paper which are pressed between the dies from which the hat they are to fit is blocked. I find that wax paper is best adapted for mypurpose in that it is not only impervious to dust, soiling by handlin greases and the like, but is a material rea ily formed by'the dies and which will best retain its shape after forming.
By shaping the protectors between the same dies which block or shape the hat, all manual labor for such shaping is obviated, and the protectors fit snugly to the hat crown and brim to exclude dust.
The reinforcing strip when made of a piece of the braid or other material out of which the hat is formed, identifies the material and. color of the hat, without removing the Protector, as well as stiffens the brim of the protector and causes it to hold its shape and remain in snug fitting placement on the hat brim. i
In addition to the uses heretofore described for my improved hat protector, it is obvious that it may be applied to any hat, and when so applied it not only protects the hat in the manner heretofore described, but also it may be used for protection of a hat against moths, etc.
Having thus described my invention, what 'I claim as new therein and desire to secure 1. A protector for hats, comprising two' sheets of impervious material, one of which is conformed to fit and cover the interior of a hat crown and the lower surface of the brim, the other conformed to fit the exterior of the hat crown and upper surface of the brim, and means for holding the outer edges of the two sheet margins in conformity with the margin of the hat brim.
2. A protector for hats constructed of impervious and imperforate material, and shaped to conform with the crown and brim of the hat, and to cover both the exterior and interior of the hat, and an element carried by the protector for designating the material of the hat covered byjthe protector.
3. A hat protector comprising'an element constructed of imperforate material and shaped to conform with the hat crown and brim and arranged to be placed within the hat crown and underlying the hat brim; a In testimony whereof, I have signed my second element constructed of imperforate name to this specification, in presence of two material shaped to conform with' the hat, a subscribing witnesses.
portion of which is arranged to cover the LEON COHEN. 5 outside of the hat crown and oi erlying the Witnesses:
hat brim, and means for uniting the margins E. L. WALLACE,
of said elements. I EDWARD E. LONGAN.
