ENOCH OHNSTRAND, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO U. S. STEEL FURNITURE COMPANY, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
FURNITURE-DRAWER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. to, rear.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ENOGH OuNs'rnANn,
following specification and shown in the. ac-
companying drawings.
The present invention relates to furniture drawers and an object of the same is to provide a construction which may be inexpensively formed from sheet metal and in which the parts thereof may be quickly and easily assembled;
To these and other ends the invention consists in certain parts and combinations of parts all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the body of the drawer with the front wall removed;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the inner face of the outer section of the front wall;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one face of the inner section of the front wall;
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional View showing the manner of connecting the front wall to the drawer bottom;
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of the dralwer showing the front wall in position; an
Fig. 6 is a horizontal front wall of the drawer.
The drawer body may be of any suitable construction but is preferably formed from a single piece of sheet material bent to provide the bottom wall 1, side walls 2 and 3 and a rear end wall 4 the side walls and rear end walls being bent vertically with reference to the bottom wall 1 and the rear edges of the side walls 2 and 3 being connected to the rear end wall 4. stance this connection embodies laterally turned tongues 5 on the rear ends of the side walls 2 and 3 overlapping the rear face of the end wall 4 and being provided with lips 6 which extend through slits 7 in the rear wall 4, said lips being bent laterally over the inner face of the rear wall. The bottom section through the wall, preferably, is depressed or dropped at 8 longitudinally along its opposite sides to provide portions which cofiperate with the guides on which the drawer slides, thus elevating the intermediate portion of the bot- In this in-.
tom and reducing the friction on the bottom of the drawer.
The front wall of the drawer is formed preferably of two sections, an outer section 9 and an inner section 10. In this instance, this front section is connected to the drawer body by forming angled flanges on the side and bottom walls of the body, said flanges having portions 11 extending at right angles to the walls by which they are carried and having forwardly deflected flanges 12 at their outer edges parallel with the said walls. On the bottom wall, the angled flange is provided only between the dropped or depressed portions 8. To cotiperate with these angled flanges, the front section 9 may be provided on its inner face with a marginal pocket formed by bending the sheet of metal rearwardly at 13 at right angles to the plane of the wall, and thence inwardly at 14 parallel with the plane of the wall, this pocket receiving the angled flanges 11, 12 on the bottom and side walls of the drawer bottom.
The inner section 10 of the front wall may be provided with marginal flanges 15 along its sides and with a marginal flange 16 alon its bottom edge, the flanges 15 and 16 being straight or. flat and the flanges 15 having their lower ends cut away or beveled to permit the flange 16 to yield slightly when the inner section is being fitted to the front section. At its upper edge, the inner section is provided with an angled flange formed bya portion 17 extending fromand arranged at right angles to the plane of the section 10, a portion 18 extending from the portion 17 and parallel with the portion 10, and a portion 19 extending from the outer edge of the portion 18 and parallel with the portion 17. The angled portions 18 and 19 are adapted to be fitted within that portion of-the marginal pocket along the upper edge of the outer section 9, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, so that, when the lower end of the inner section 10 is brought up to the outer section 9, the inner section will abut the inner face of the drawer body and hold the outer section in place.
Arranged on the front faceof the front wall is a handle 20 which is preferably secured in place by two bolts. These bolts may have heads 21 and are loosely passed through openings 22 in the inner section, being provided with shoulders 23 which ed to be projected. Extending forwardly from the attaching plate is the barrel 27 of the lock, provided with the key opening, said barrel being adapted to project slightn through an opening 28'formed in the front section 9.
A drawer constructed in accordance with this invention has special advantages for resisting fire. Its frontwall is formed of two members or sections which are spaced apart so as not to provide any two wide abutting portions adapted to transmit heat from one section to the other. The angled flanges on the drawer body serve to increase the width between the two members of the front wall, and, at the same time, permit the drawer to simulate a wooden construction having a surrounding projection on its front wall to exclude dust; The lock is only secured to the inner section of the front wall and, in this way, may be more readily assembled while permitting a knock-down construction. The handle is connected to the drawer without tying the two sections or members of the front wall into abutting relation.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1. In combination in a drawer for furniture, a body having angledflanges on the forward ends of its bottoin and side walls, said flanges extending outwardly with reference to said walls and then forwardly; and a front wall embodying an inner and an outer section, the outer section having a marginal pocket formed by portions extending rearwardly and inwardly, said pocket receivin the flanges on the side and bottom walls 0 the body, and the inner sec tion coiiperating with the inner face of the body and having a ortion fitted in that portion of the margmal pocket along the 'upper edge of the front section.
2. In combination in a drawer for furniture, a body having angled flanges on the forward ends of its bottom'and side walls, said flanges extending outwardlv with reference to said walls and thence forwardly parallel with said walls; and a front wall formed of an inner and an outer section, the outer section having a marginal pocket formed by portions extending rearwardly and inwardly, said pocket receiving the angled flanges on the side and bottom walls of the body, and said inner section having straight flanges on its vertical side and bottom edges and an angled flange along its upper edge, the angled flange extending forwardly at right angles to the plane of the section, thence upwardly parallel with the plane of the section, and thence forwardly at right angles to the plane of the section, the last-named forwardly extending portion and the outwardly extending portion being received within that portion of the marginal pocket along the upper edge of the front section.
