To (112 whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD W. Sonnsnnn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Friday Harbor, in the county of San Juan and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pie-Grimpers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to pie crimpers and has for its principal object the production of a device provided with a wheel, said wheel having teeth upon its outer periphery, whereby indentations may be placed around the outer edge of a pie.
Another object of this invention is the production of a pie crimper provided with a handle formed from a single strand of wire.
A still further object of this invention is in the production of a handle formed from a single strand of wire, one end of which is bent so as to form an axle upon which a crimping wheel may be mounted.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a top planview of the device, showing the wheel partly in section.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary end elevation of the device, showing the wheel partly in ele vation.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail perspective view of one end of the handle.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view of the wheel, showing how the same is mounted upon its axle.
By referring to the drawings by numerals it will be seen that 1 designates the handle of the device which is formed from a single strand of wire and is bent intermediate its ends so as to form a grip portion 2. It will be seen that one portion of the handle extends parallel with the crimping wheel 3 and extends beyond the periphery of the wheel so as to form a cutting point 4;. The upper portion of the handle extends parallel with the crimping wheel 3 as far as the axle opening 5 provided in said wheel, at which point the device is bent so as to form the loop 6 which loop extends parallel with the adjacent edge or side of the wheel 3. The portion is then bent so as to form the stub-axle 7 which extends at right angles to the wheel 3. The stub-axle is then bent so as to formthe retaining lip 8, this lip, of course, extending parallel with the adjacent side of the front wheel 3.
The crimping wheel 3 is provided upon its outer periphery with the transversely extending teeth 9. It will be seen that when this wheel 3 is rotated around the outer edge of a pie that the same will be efficiently crimped. It should, of course, be understood that this wheel 3 is mounted upon the stub axle 7 and is held in place by the retaining lip 8 and the eye loop 6.
When this device is in use it will be understood that the portion provided with the point i is adapted to slide along the outer edge of the pie plate and will at the same time cut away all superfluous dough which may be hanging over the side edge and will also act as a guide for the crimping wheel 3. It should also be noted that the retaining lip 8 and more especially the eye loop 6 will efficiently prevent any tendency of the wheel 3 wabbling or otherwise being displaced from the stub-axle 7.
it should also be noted that if it is desired to have the crimped portion of the pie closer to the center thereof or to have the same larger the crimping wheel 3 may be drawn toward the center and owing to the fact that the point 4; will bear upon the outer edge of the pie plate the arm will give, as is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
From the above description it will be seen that a very simple and efficient device has been produced the handle of which may be formed from a single strand of wire, and that the necessity of washers, nuts, and other such means will be obviated, thereby producing a device which may be .mani factnred with the least possible material and cost.
What is claimed is In a device of the class described, the combination of a-wheel, said wheel provided with transversely extending teeth upon its outer periphery, a handle adapted to be formed from a single strand of wire, said handle being adapted to be bent intermediate its ends, a cutting point provided upon one end of said handle, said pointed end adapted to be sprung away from said wheel so that pie may be crin ped as close to the center as desired, a stub aXle formed upon the outer end of said handle, a retaining lip extending parallel With the adjacent edge of said Wheel provided upon one end of said axle and an eye loop formed upon the other end of said axle and adapted to extend parallel with the adjacent edge of said Wheel, whereby any tendency to Wabbling on the part of the Wheel Will be obviated. 10
