Be it known that I, ADOLF P. Wrr'rn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Garbage-Cans, of
which the following is declared to be a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to garbage cans, and its primary object is to prov de 1mproved means for disinfecting and deodorlzing the can and its contents; another ob ect is to provide improved means for automat1- cally cleaning the can, and thus mproving its sanitary condition. The invention consists in the novel features hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
The invention is clearly illustrated 1n the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a central vertlcal section through a garbage can embodying a simple form of the present invention; Fig. 2 1s a detail vertical section through the control and regulating valve of the device; Fig. 3 1s a horizontal section taken on the lever 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a fragment of the lower end of the can body and bottom and Fig. 5 is a detail vertical section through the filler hole and cap.
Referring to said drawing, the reference numeral 10, designates a cylindrical can body open at the top and bottom and having a curled edge at each end as shown. Secured to, but spaced away from each end of the can body on its inner face is a ring 11, between which and the can body is a resilient ring 12, preferably made of rubber.
The rubber ring is held tight against theinner face of the can body by the ring 11, and the parts may be riveted together by rivets 13.
Slidably held in the hollow of the can body is a movable bottom, 14, which may comprise a flat, circular bottom piece 15 to the edge of which is permanently secured a ringlike flange 16, which fits loosely in the can body, and projects on each side 0f the bottom piece 15. The arrangement 1s such that irrespective of which end of the can body is held uppermost, the bottom will fall by gravity to the lower end of the can body with the flange 16, resting on the rubber ring 12, thus making a tight joint and prethrough a valve venting leakage at the bottom. A handle or bail 17, secured on cars 18, fastened to the can body near its middle furnishes means for carrying the can about regardless of which end is held uppermost.
The cover 19, has the usual down turned annular flange 2O adapted to fit around either end of the can. A handle 21, secured to the top 22, of the cover furnishes means for raising and handling the cover; Below the top 22, of the cover is an inverted, cone shaped or dished bottom piece 23, which is soldered or otherwise secured to the top piece 22 near the flange 20. Said top piece 22, and bottom piece 23, form a chamber or able liquid disinfectant and deodorizing substance whlch is permitted to escape slowly point of the bottom piece. The drip regulating and controlling means comprises a tubular member 24, which extends between and connects the top and bottom pieces of the cover, and is soldered or otherwise secured thereto.
The wall of the tubular member has one or more openings 25, formed therein through which the contents of the chamber may enter the tubular member. Within the tubular member 24, is a valve 26, which has a tapered end 27, at the bottom that is adapted to seat on a tapered valve seat 28, formed at the bottom of the tubular member. Above controlled port at the lowest receptacle for containing a quantity of suitthe tapered end, the stem 29, of the valve is between said. end and the tapered seat, the
flow being regulated by adjusting the valve with respect to its seat. The upper end of the stem is screw threaded as at 30, and said upper end is threaded in the upper end of the tubular member, whereby by turning the valve, the tapered end may be adjusted with respect to its seat. Preferably the extreme end portion is knurled or otherwise finished to provide a. finger hold for the stem. If desired, the upper end of the tubular member may project above the top piece of the cover, and may be externally screw threaded for the reception of a screw cap 31,- to .cover the end of the valve. In use the chamber is sup lied with a suitable liquid disinfectant an deodorizing substance, the filler plug replaced and the valve ad usted to permlt the desired flow through the valve opening. The garbage can may nowbe used for the ordinary and usual pur oses and the contents are constantly su jected to the effects of the dripping disinfectant. .To empty the can, the cover is removed, and the can inverted, whereupon'the contents are discharged, and the bottom falls to the lower end, at the same time scraping out any of the contents adhering to the inner face of the can body. The can may now be used in its inverted condition sincethe bottom rests upon and seats against the lower rubber rmg. By reason of the flange on the bottom piece, any liquid matter which accompanies the preventing its escape at t e lower end'; the oint between the flange and rubber ring further prevents leakage.
From the above it is readily apparent that a reversible garbage can is had which is self cleanin and which is-constantly kept in disinfecte and deodorized condition.
