CARL B. CHEEK, F ENTERPRISE, IOWA.
LIFE-SAVING surr.
Application filed December 28, 1915. Serial No.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL B. CHEER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Enterprise, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Life-Saving Suits, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in life saving suits, and has for its primary object the provision'of a suit which will be constructed in such manner and formed of such material as to be water proof and enable the party wearing the same to float in water an unlimited number of hours. The invention has for another object the provision of a suit of this character which will be of. such construction that it maybe readily secured in position and fastened upon a party before entering the water, the suit being protected at its seams to prevent entrance of the water.
The invention has for another object the provision of a suit of this character which will be of such construction that it may be readily adjusted and securely fastened around the neck and limbs of the wearer.
The invention has for a further object the provision of a suit of this character includ ing inflated members at tions of the suit, and means for supporting a life belt around the waist of the wearer With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination, anolarrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth in the specification, pointed out in the claims, and shown in the drawings, in which Figire 1 is an elevation of the complete suit with the outer section of the front partially closed;
Fig. 2 is a transvei on the plane of line Fig. is a transv tron substantially on the plane of line o-3 of Fig. l; and
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary detail view showing the lower portion of the tongue for the front of the suit.
Fig.5 is a cross sectional view on the line 5-5 of one of the proved suit.
Referring more particularly to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 designates the body of the suit having sleeves 2 projecting from its section substantially 2 of Fig. 1;

predetermined porcured upon .the outer face of the leg portions of the imfeet to the knees to make the device comfortable. Suitable tongues 9 aresecured to the divided portions of the.
legs 5 to prevent water from entering the suit at this point. It will also be evident that by constructing the suit in this manner, one size'suit may serve forparties of various he suit is also provided with sure means such as the fastener shown in the drawings by the numeral 11. The front of the suit is provided with an inner member 12 also divided and provided with fastener 13 and a tongue 14: is secured by its opposite edges to the inner member 12 along the divided portion of the same to prevent water from reaching the wearer of the suit. Between the separable closures 11 and 13 is positioned an inflated chest member 15 having a Suitable valve 16 for connection with a pump or the like. The neck of the suit is also provided with an interior inflatable member 17 having a projecting valve 18 similar-to the valve 16, whereby the suit may be readily tightened around the neck of the wearer. The. entire suit is provided with a lining 19 of any suitable material to protect the wearer of the suit from the effects of the cold water.
Suitable belt supportingstraps20 are sebody of the suit to support a life belt 21 around 'the waist of the life belt being fastened in the usual manner, as shown at 22. Y
From the'foregoing, it will'be readily apparent that this suit may be readily secured upon a party about to enter the. water and any party wearing this suit'will be able to remain in the water an indefinite number of hours. It will therefore be seen that this suit is especially adapted for use as alife- 5 enlarged at their Patented Apr. 3, 1917. I
leg portions of the a separate 2 wearer, as shown in 1, the
saving suit to be carried upon a. vessel and tions terminating respectively in integral gloves and feet covering, each of said leg portions being divided longitudinally and having secured to the edges of said division to prevent the entrance of water thereinto a flexible tongue, lacing means for drawing the edges of said divided portions together, a division extending from the ulist line of the suit upwardly to the neck at the front thereof having a flexible tongue on the inner side secured at its edges to the edges of said opening closure means for said divided portion and inflatable members within the suit at the neck thereof.
2. A life saving suit comprising a body portion, integral arm portions having integral gloves at the extremities thereof, leg portions having enlargements on the ends to receive the feet of the wearer, said suit being divided at the front from Waist line upwardly to the neck, closure members on the edges of said division to secure the same together, an inner member secured at its ends to the body portion in rear of the division formed therethrough, said inner member being also vertically divided and having fastening members on the edges thereof. a flexible tongue secured-"at its edges to the edges of said inner member to prevent the passage of water into said suit, an inflatable "member between the front of the suit and the inner member, and an inflatable member encircling the neck of the suit.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
