2 SHEETS-SHEET 2' EDWARD C. HENRY, OF IVIISSOULA, MONTANA.
CHIMNEY AND STOVEPIPE ATTACHMENT.
Application filed November 29, 1916. Serial No.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD C. HENRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Missoula, in the county of Missoula and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney and Stovepipe Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a chimney and stove pipe attachment and has for its primary object the provision of means for looking a stove pipe in the stove pipe hole of a chimney, preventing the stove pipe from slipping or withdrawing from the stove pipe hole and obviating the danger of fires caused by stove pipes becoming detached from chimneys.
Another object of this invention is to provide an element connected to a stove pipe and extending through a stove pipe hole of a chimney and engaging the inner wall thereof for holding the pipe against accidental withdrawal therefrom.
A further object of this invention is to provide a pair of arms connected together and detachably secured to the stove pipe and adapted to extend through the stove pipe hole of the chimney and have their free ends bent at right angles for engagement with the inner wall of the chimney whereby the stove pipe will be held against accidental displacement.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a chimney and stove pipe attachment of the above stated character, which shall be simple, durable and eflicient,
and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in View, as it will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features in construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed' For a complete understanding offmy invention, reference may be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a chimney and stove pipe attachment constructed in accordance with my invention, illustrating it applied to a chimney and to a stove pipe,
Specification of Letters Patent.
direction of the interior of Patented Mar. 27, 1917. 134,071.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is an end view looking from the the chimney,
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional View illustrating the means for securing the arms to the stove pipe,
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary elevation of the adjustable securing means for a band surrounding the stove pipe,
Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view of the locking plate and the means for supporting the same.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a chimney having a fine 2 with a stove pipe opening 3 in communication therewith for receiving a stove pipe 1. The stove pipe 4 is of the ordinary construction and to which my invention is applied.
A sectional band 5 consisting of sections 6, 7 and 8 surround the stove pipe as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. The sections 6 and 7 are secured together by a hinge 9 and the section 8 is secured to the other end of the section 6 by a hinge 10. The free end of the section 7 is bent at right angles to form a bracket 11 which is apertured to receive a threaded rod 12 having a T-shaped head 13 which is pivotally secured to a locking lever 14 as illustrated at 15. The screwthreaded end of the rod 12 which extends through the apertured bracket 11 has a nut 16 threaded thereon for retaining a spring 17 upon'the rod 12 and which bears against the bracket 11 as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4:. The free end of the section 8 is bifurcated as illustrated at 18 forming a pair of relatively spaced arms 19 which are bent to form hooks or curved bearings. The locking lever 14 has one end thereof bifurcated to form a pair of relatively 'spaced arms which are also curved to fit within the hooks or bearings formed by the relatively spaced arms 19 for hingedly securing the lever 14. to the section 8 and which will permit the lever 14: to be detached from the section 8 when moved into an unlocked position. When the locking lever 14 isswung to a locking position as illustrated in Fig. 4, the rod 12 extends through the bifurcated end of the section 8 and the locking lever and is prevented from any lateral movement with relation to the sectional band 5. A lock nut 20 is threaded upon the rod 12 and engages the bracket 11 whereby the tension upon the spring 17 may be regulated so as to increase and decrease ceived within the stove pipe the clamping action of the sectional band 5 upon the stove pipe 4.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that by swinging the locking lever 14 away from the section 8, the sectional band 5 will be expanded or enlarged so that the same may be readily slipped over the pipe 4 or the locking lever 1 1 may be detached from the hooks or bearings of the section 8 so that the section 8 may be swung rearwardly upon the hinge 10 so that the section 5 may be slipped over the stove pipe 4 and by swinging the locking lever 14; in the direction of the section 8,the section 5 will tightly clamp the stove pipe t, but will be prevented from crushing or mashing the same by the spring 17 upon the rod 12 as this spring will permit the rod to move within the bracket 11 over a. predetermined pressure of the sectional band 5 upon the stove pipe.
A pair of relatively spaced arms 21 are secured to the sectional band 5 and are rehole 3 of the chimney 1 and have their right angles as illustrated at 22 for engagement with the inner wall of the chimney or within the flue 2 as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1. The arms 21 are connected by a substantially semi-circular band 23. A. bolt 24 is carried by the band 23 and extends through an elongated slot 25 of a locking plate 26 for slidably-securing the locking plate 26 to the band. The locking plate 26 is provided with a plurality of notches 27 which are adapted to be engaged by an L-shaped plate 28. One of the arm portions of the L- shaped plate 28 is forced into engagement with the notches 27 of the locking plate 28 at all times by a coil spring 29 mounted upon ithe bolt 22!: and the other arm portion of the L-shaped plate 28 is adapted to abut the end of the stovepipe for limiting the movement ofthe stove pipe within the stove pipe hole 3 of the chimney 1. The locking plate 26 has its free end bent at right angles to form a hook 30 adapted to engage the outer wall of the chimney 1. By sliding the plate 26 in the direction of the fine 2 of the chimney 1 until the hook 80 thereon engages the outer wall of the chimney, the arms 21 are tightly clamped to the chimney as the L-shaped plate 28 engages the teeth upon the locking plate :26 preventing longitudinal movement of said plate in the, direction of the stove pipe, thus it will be seen that the arms are efficiently and permanently secured within the stove pipehole 3 of the chimney, obviating any danger of the stove pipe 1 from be- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the free ends bent ating accidentally withdrawn from the stove pipe opening 3.
If desired, the hook 30 of the locking plate 26 may be provided with an aperture for the purpose of receiving a wire or like element for further tying the stove pipe to the chimney.
The usual collar 31 is placed about the stove pipe t and in engagement with the outer wall of the chimney for the purpose of preventing any escape of the smoke and fumes between the stove pipe and wall of the stove pipe hole 3.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it may be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A chimney and stove pipe attachment comprising a sectional band consisting of a fixed section and a pair of movable sections, means for hinging said movable sections to the fixed section, a bracket formed on the free end of one of said movable sections, a 'T-shaped rod adjustably secured to said bracket, the free end of the other movable section having its ends bifurcated and bent to form bearings, and a locking lever pivoted to the T-shaped rod and engaging the bearings, and means for securing the band to a chimney.
2. A. chimney and stove pipe attachment comprising a sectional band consisting of a stationary section and a pair of movable sections, means for hinging the movable sections to the stationary section, a T-shaped rod slidably secured to the free end of one of said movable sections, a coil spring mounted on said rod and bearing against the free end of one of said movable sections, the other movable section having a bearing formed on the free end thereof, a locking lever having a bearing formed on one end and resting within the bearing of the second mentioned movable section and pivoted to the T-shaped rod for clamping the band upon a stove pipe, and means for connecting the band to a chimney.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD C. HENRY.
