COLLAR.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Mar. 27, 19117- Application filed February 2, 1914, Serial No. 815,968. Renewed September 14, 1916. erial No. 120,034.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Gnonen O. SANBORN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collars, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has for its primary aim to provide a. collar capable of variable adjustments which will be efficient and satisfactory in protection from storms as well as of a practical construction.
Other objects will appear as the description progresses and those features of construction and arrangements of parts on which protection is requested will be succinctly defined in the appended claims.
It may be preliminarily stated that in the preferred embodiment of the invention, which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, there are employed a set of fasteners disposed on one end portion of the collar in triangular arrangement and adapted for varying engagements by the component parts of the fasteners arranged on the opposite end portion of the collar to thereby alter the size and shape of the collar which is itself peculiarly fabricated to afford a plural adjustment.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following specification and the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a view of the collar applied to a garment.
Fig. 2 is a view of a fragmentary portion of a garment with the collar in normal position.
Figs. 8, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11 are similar views disclosing the varying adjustments of which the collar is capable of assuming.
Employing like characters of reference for like parts throughout the several views, 1 denotes a garment of any style or material and 2 the collar secured thereto.
The forward edges 3 of the lapels 4 extend in alinement, when unfolded, with the border edges 5 of the garment for a'distance and then are joined to the collar edge proper which is formed with a com-pound curve comprising a central concaved or incurved portion 6 joining the spaced convexed or outcurved portions 7 The incurved portion of the collar forms a reduced rear portion to provide a neat and snug fit of the latter atthe back of the head while the side outcurved portions extend up over the ears and cheeks.
Along one border of the garment is arranged a set of buttons, the upper one 8 being preferably engaged by the button hole 9 when the collar assumes any of its adjustments.
Substantially in alineinent with the border set of fasteners, and on'the contiguous lapel 4, is disposed a pair of buttons 10, 11, and backwardly from button 10, and substantially in the horizontal plane thereof, is a button 12. The buttons are thereby ar ranged in triangular relation. On the op posite lapel, a set of three button holes, 13, lt and 15 are provided and disposed in inverted triangular arrangement relative to the buttons, the button 11 being adapted for selective engagement with holes 18 and 14,
'and the button hole 15 engaging either of the buttons 10 and 12.
Fig. 2 shows the collar in its normally turned down position with none of the fasteners employed except button 8, as above set forth, and Fig. 5 illustrates the collar in its normally turned up position in which the ears and cheeks are inclosed.
To form a tight fitting collar buttons 11 and 12 are respectively engaged in holes 13 and 15, shown most clearly in Fig. 3, while a slightly large neck opening is provided by simply utilizing one fastening means namely, button 12 and hole 15, disclosed in Fig. 4. In this latter position, the collar is permitted of being further folded or turned down in front and also adjusted to a lower height.
A. position similar to Fig. 1, with the collar turned up, is disclosed in Fig. 6 in which, by employing the same fastening means, the neck and ears are warmly fitted with the chin exposed, whereas in Fig. 7 the opening is enlarged, by utilizing only button 10 and hole 15, to provide ample room to receive the chin.
Continuing from the position of Fig. 7, the uppermost button 11 is engaged by hole 1 1, button 10 being previously engaged by hole 15, to cover' or inclose practically the entire face with the exception of the nose and upwardly from the eyes. By turning down or back the collar from a position as in Fig. 8, one similar to that of Fig. 9 is formed making a maximum high neck opening wherein the lapels are overlapped,
copies of this patent may be obtained for and by loosening or unfastening button 11 a maximum low neck opening is provided, the same being clearly disclosed in Fig. 10.
Engaging holes. 14 and 15 with buttons 11 and 12, respectively, a position similar to that'shown in Fig. 3 is obtained with the exception that the upper portion of the collar is larger in the former position, the lower or base portion remaining the same.
The collar may be detachable, if desired, and used alone as a muffler. It is intended to use the collar wherever applicable, as on coats, vests, overcoats, shirts, sweaters, etc. Furthermore, the terms button and buttonhole are employed for ease of description, it, of course, being understood that any suitable fastening means may be used.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no undue limitation is to be understood therefrom, but the appended claims are 'to'be construed as broadly as is permissible in view of the prior art. 1
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by 7 Letters Patent of the United States of America, is p 1. In an article of the character described in combination, a garment, a collar secured thereto and having overlapping end portions, spaced fasteners arranged on one end portion substantially vertically, and another fastener disposed on the end portion latcrally of the other fasteners, the other end portion of the collar having spaced means for selective engagement by the uppermost of said fasteners and a single means for engagement by either of the other fasteners.
2. An article ofthe character described comprising a collar having meeting end portions; laterally spaced fasteners on one end portion of the collar when the same is upturned and another fastener on the specified end portion spaced upwardly from the 111st fasteners; the opposite end portion of the collar being provided with a single means, adapted for selective engagement with either of the laterally spaced fasteners, and spaced means provided above the single means for being selectively engaged by the upper fastener on the opposite end portion.
Signed at Seattle, Washington this 26th day of January 1914.
