Specification of Letters Patent.
PACKAGE-TIE.
Patented Mar. 27, 1917..
Application filed August 1 1, 1916. Serial No. 114,435.
I '0 all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, HAROLD S. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Package- Ties, of which the following is specification.
This invention relates to package ties.
One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a package tie of simple construction and operation by means of which the same piece of twine, or other tying medium, can be used a number of times. A further object is to provide a tie which can be made in large numbers at comparatively small cost.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention as used.
Fig. 2 is a plan view, and
Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal sectional view.
In constructing the tie, a rectangular plate 1 of sheet spring metal, or other suitable material, is used. This plate is stamped with a central opening 2 and longitudinally extending inwardly directed tongues 3 the in ner ends of which are turned upward, as at 3. The space left between the sides of the tongues and the body of plate 1 is such as to permit the insertion of twine without cutting the same. 7
In using the tie, the plate 1 is placed flat with one end at the centerof the upper surface of the box or package A. The twine B is then given several turns about one of the tongues 3, being inserted under the upturned inner end 3 thereof, and drawn outward along the tongue so as to be tightly gripped between the same and the body of plate 1. The twine is then given one or more turns longitudinally of the package, after which it is turned around the other tongue 3 and wrapped about the package transversely, as at C. The free end of the twine is then given several turns about this latter tongue and firmly secured between the same and the body of plate 1, as at D.
The opening 2 at the center of the plate provides means whereby the twine may be easily and quickly inserted under the tongues 3 and, also, whereby the plate may be hung upon a suitable hook or the like, when not in use.
In using my device it is not necessary to have the twine of any particular length, nor is it necessary to form any knots in the twine. For this reason, the same piece of twine may be used over a number of times for different packages.
What is claimed is In package ties, the combination of a plate having a central opening, and flat inwardly directed tongues formed integral with the plate and positioned at each side of the opening, said tongues being in axial alinement and each of said tongues lying in the plane of the plate for the major portion of its l gth In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
