Description

, Y J F. 0 00mm I 1 DRAW BjAR AND DRAFT YO KE CONNECTING MEANS 1N RAILWAY CAR DRAFT RIG GING APPLICATION FILED JULY 26, I916.
Patented-Mar. 27,1917.
A TTORNEY JOHN F. OCONNOR, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR T0 WILLIAM H. MINER, 0F
' CHAZY, NEW YORK.
DRAW-BAN, AND DRAFT-Y UKE CONNECTING MEANS IN RAILWAY-CAR DEAFT-RIGGING.
To all whom it may concern."
- Be it known that 1. Joey F. OCoxzvon, a citizen of the United States, residing at .Chicago, in the county of Cook and State full, clear, concise, and exact description,
reference being hadto the accompanying drawings,- forming a part of this specification. I l
My invention relates toimprovements in draw bar and draft yoke connecting means in railway car draft rigging.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide an efficient means for connecting a draft yoke and a draw bar in draft rigging for railway cars. Other objects will appear from the description of my invention herein following.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in vertical longitudinal section, of a draw bar and draft yoke embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on line of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 4: designates a draw bar. having the usual butt 5 and the upper and lower shoulders 6 and 7, respectively. The draft yoke is indicated by the numeralv 9. the said yoke having an upper limb 10, a lower limb 11, a rear connecting member 12 and a hollow head 13, which is preferably integral with the said limbs. \Vithin the head is provided an upper gib 14, adapted to engage the upper shoulder 6 of the draw bar and the lower portion of the head is provided with a draw bar locking lever 15. which is provided with a shoulder 16 adapted to engage the lower shoulder 7 of the draw bar when the draw bar locking lever is inlocking position. as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The said lever is swingingly connected at its rear end 17 to the yoke. as for instance by the hinge member 18, including the pin 19 and the cotter 20. which. with the head 21- thereof. prevents the accidental displacement of the said pin.
The arm 21 ofthe draw bar locking lever 15 is forwardly extended along the underfa'ce 22 of the draw bar. and in preferable construction is of substantially the same Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 27, 1917.
Application filed July 26, 1916. SerialNo. 111,365.
I width asthe draw bar, the forward" end 23 of said lever being sufliciently extended to permit the said lever to ride between the draw bar it and the draw bar'carry iron '24, which is secured by suitable means, such as bolts 25, to parts of the car above the draw bar, as for instance the buffer block 26. Other parts of a car underframe, as the end sill and center sills, are not shown in'the and assumes the position indicated by the dotted lines at 28 in Fig. 1 of the drawing, during the insertion of the draw bar within the yoke head. It will be understood that the space between the face 27 of the lever 15 and the lower face of the gib 14: of the yoke is sutiicient to permit the rearward passage of the butt 5 of the draw bar 4: therethrough. hen the draw bar has been forced rearward sutiiciently} to aline the up per shoulder 6 rearwardly of the gib 14, the draw bar locking lever is then pulled upwardly, the said lever serving to lift the draw bar until the upper shoulder 6 thereof is in engagement with the gib 11 of the yoke, whereupon the shoulder 16, provided upon the lever. will be in engagement with the lower shoulder 7 of the draw bar, and the arm 21 of the lever will be extended along the under face of the draw bar 4. The draw bar carry iron is then placed .in position and secured in the usual manner by the bolts 25. It will thus be apparent that the draw bar locking lever not only serves the function of lifting the draw bar into hood. In this open 'position, the extension 21 is inclined forwardly and downwardly, thus providing an incline to facilitate insertion of the draw bar and to act as a guide in pushing the draw bar butt within the "yokeJ'I-lt is evident thatthe yoke itself will be "suppartea b the gear when the draw bar is being'ins'erted or removed.
I claim: 7
1. A yoke for draft riggings having means at its forward end for cooperation with the upper shoulder of a draw bar, said yoke having a displaceable locking member adapted to cooperate with the lower shoulder of a draw bar when the locking member is in operative position, said member having a forward extension and the yoke having means to limit the degree of displacement of said member from operative position, whereby said member is positioned with its extension extending forwardly and downwardly to thereby facilitate insertion of a draw bar to cooperate with the upper shoulder of a draw bar, said hood having a locking member pii'otally mounted therein at the bottom, said member. having a shoulder arranged to cooperate with'the lower shoulder of the' member having. also draw bar, said lockin f arm; the lower wall a forwardly extende of the hood limiting the downward movement of the locking member to" thereby position said arm so as to extend forwardly "and downwardly to thereby facilitate insertion of a draw bar within the hood.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 22nd day of July 1916.
JOHN F. OCONNOR.
