lmprov ementin Coal Mining Tool s.
N0. 122,035. I Patent ed Dec. 19,1871.
bittorn-eyg PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC LAMPLUGH, OF PEORIA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN COAL-MINING TOOLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,035, dated December 19, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC LAMPLUGH, of Peoria, in the county of Peoria and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool for Mining Goal, 850.; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a tool for mining coal andfor other purposes, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a side view of my mining-tool.
A A represent the outlines of a shaft in a coalmine. B represents a post provided at one end with feet or projections act, which are sharpened so as to be inserted and held in the coaLbed. In the other end of the post A is a set-screw, b, with a sharpened holder, d, placed loosely on a pin or tenon at the end of the screw. Thus, by turning the screw 1), the post is held firmly in the top and bottom of the shaft. On the side of the post B is a clamp, C, which secures a bar, 1), to the post. This bar is notched on its upper edge, as shown. Two posts maybe used, it so desired, with a notched bar between them. D represents a metal holder, in one end of which is inserted a handle, E, and at the other'end a pick, G, or other mining instrument. The handle and mining instrument may be secured in the holder by setscrews, or by any other suitable means, only so as to be readily removed when desired. A chain, c, is attached to the holder D and thrown over the bar and, by a hook at its other end, fastened at any height desired. By this means a swing ing pick or mining-tool is obtained.
The operator with one hand takes hold of the handle E and with the other on the chain near the holder, and thereby guides or directs the tool.
It is, of course, evident that the tool-holder may contain one or more tools at a time, or a drill may be inserted and used in the same way,
The holder may be made of wood, in which case it should be surrounded by a metallic band for attaching the chain. In this case the holder may be revolved for drilling.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The bar D clamped to the adjustable post B and notched at'itsouter end for supporting a swinging drill-holder with drill or drills, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The holder D provided with a removable handle, E, and removable mining-tool, G, and suspended by means of a chain, e, from the notched bar D, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of August,
Witnesses:
A. N. MARE,
FRANK BAILEY. (124)
