Definitions

  • This invention relates to a new process of preparing gold for dental purposes, and to a new method of making blocks of gold from prepared foil. It consists, first, in making the foil pliable by subjecting the same to heat between layers of paper or other fabric. It also consists in forming the prepared gold into blocks by superposing a suitable number of sheets of foil and annealing them, when soft, spongy blocks of suitable size can be cut from the collected material.
  • Gold-foil thus prepared, or in other manner, is, according to the second part of our invention, placed in layers, one upon another, and then annealed under slight pressure to form a spongy mass of gold, which can be cut into minute blocks for practical use, each block being of a size to be used whole.

Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD G. KEARSING AND LEONZO KEARSING, OF SPRING VALLEY, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN PROCESSES FOR PREPARING GOLD FOR DENTAL PURPOSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,029, dated December 19, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD G. KEARSING and LEONZO KEARSING, of Spring Valley, in the county of ltockland and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Process of Preparing Gold for Dental Purposes; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new process of preparing gold for dental purposes, and to a new method of making blocks of gold from prepared foil.
In the treatment of gold-foil we proceed as follows: We place the sheets of foil into a suitable box or frame which is sufliciently close to protect its contents from direct action with the fire. Between every two sheets of foil we interpose a sheet of paper or other soft fabric. A weighted cover is placed upon the contents of the box to prevent them from expanding in a vertical direction. The box, with its contents, is then subjected to a degree of heat which will suflice to shrink the paper, as it is apt to under such influence. The motion thereby produced in the various particles of paper is conveyed to the foil, which is drawn and shriveled so that its smooth surface is broken, and it becomes sufliciently soft and pliable for practical purposes. The paper is now removed and the foil ready for use.
Gold-foil thus prepared, or in other manner, is, according to the second part of our invention, placed in layers, one upon another, and then annealed under slight pressure to form a spongy mass of gold, which can be cut into minute blocks for practical use, each block being of a size to be used whole.
The tearing of gold and consequent injurious handling by the dentist is thus made unnecessary, and the material furnished to market in superior quality and most convenient shape.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The process of surface-roughening gold-foil, to prevent two or more sheets thereof from consolidatin g when brought together, by heating and shrinking it between paper, as described.
2. As an article of manufacture for dentists use, a block of gold-toil formed of a series of previously surface-roughened and annealed sheets superposed upon one another, as described.
EDWARD G. KEARSING. LEONZO KEARSING.
