To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that 1, PnnsIroR F. SMITH, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Locomotive-Pilots, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication.
Hy invention relates to pilots for locomotives, the principal object of my invention being to provide a pilot which by virtue of its construction, makes it possible 'for the locomotive to which it is applied to be used for both road and switching service, and said pilot being constructed and equipped so as to comply with all of the requirements of the Interstate Commerce' laws relating particularly to locomotive pilots, their construction, equipment, etc.
Further objects of my invention are to provide a comparatively simple combination road and switch engine pilot'which can be easily'and quickly applied to or removed from the pilot beam, and further to construct a pilot so thatit can be readily adjusted vertically upon' its supports, thereby varying and regulating the distance between the base .of the pilot and the plane occupied by the tops of the track rails.
With the foregoing and other` objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully' described, claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of a combined road and switch engine pilot ofmy improved construction, the same-being applied to a locomotive pilot beam.

base comprises a pair of side members 10 Y with the outer ends vof which are formed kintegral forwardly projecting f end vplates 11.
Formed integral with or fixed to the inner ends of the side members 10 are forwardly projecting plates 12 and formed integral with or fixed to the forward ends of -said members 12 are central base members 13, the inner ends of which are rigidly or integrally connected. These base members 13 are inclined with respect to the plane occupied by the members 10 so that their connected inner ends occupy a point or plane a substantial distance in front of the front ends of members 11 and 12.
The upright or vertical portion of the pilot frame includesa pair of vertically disposed end plates 14 and a pair of vertically disposed intermediate plates 15. The lower ends of end plates 14 are formed integral with or fixed to the rear ends of end plates 11 and said plates 14 are provided with vertically disposed slots 16 which receive bolts utilized for attaching the pilot to the pilot beam.

ends of said plates 15 are connected to the rear ends of plates 12 by vertically disposed slats or rails 18.
Connecting the central portions' of intermediate slats 18 with the upper portions of end plates 14 are horizontally disposed rails 19, the same occupying substantially the same vertical plane with the rear portions of basemembers 10 and connecting said rails 19 and base members 10 are vertically disposedslats 20.
Connecting the lower portions of plates 15 is a horizontally disposed rail 21 and extending therefrom downwardly to the in* Vclined base members 13 is a series of inclined slats 22. Owing to the inclined or angular arrangement of the base members 13, the position of rail 21 which occupies a vertical plane substantially to the rear of said base members 13 and the inclined positions of slats 23, the middleportion of the pilot is substantially pyramidal in fo'rm with the apex centrally arranged at a point a substantial distance in front of the sides of the pilot and with the faces of the pyramidal structure inclining rearwardly toward the top and likewise rearwardly toward the sides of said structure, thus following the lines of the accepted types of pilots and complying with the requirements of the Interstate Commerce laws respecting pilots which are used on road engines.
Fixed in any suitable manner to the horizontally disposed plates 11 and 12 to the sides of the central pyramidal structure of the pilot are horizontally disposed foot boards 23, the same serving as steps or supports for trainmen who are obliged to mount the pilot while the locomotive to which the latter is attached is being used in switching service, and fixed in any suitable manner to the lower portions of uprights 14; and rails or slats 18 and immediately to the rear and above the foot boards 23 are toe boards 24 which serve to prevent the feet of the trainmen from slipping rearwardly off the foot boards 23.
In the drawings, I have illustrated the pilot frame as being cast in a single piece and while such construction is very desirable, it will be understood that in some instances it may be advantageous to construct the frame in a number of parts which can be readily assembled and secured to each other in any suitable manner.
Projecting rearwardly from upright members 14- and preferably at points between the slots 16 therein are lugs 25 which are adapted to enter recesses 26, the same being formed in brackets 27 and which latter are fixed to and depend from the underside of the pilot beam 28 to which my improved pilot is attached.
The front wall of the pilot bneam and the lower portions of the brackets 27 are provided with apertures which receive the bolts 29 utilized in securing the pilot to said beam, said bolts passing through the slots 16. Corresponding attaching bolts 30 pass through the slots 17 in the upper portions of plates 15 and through suitably located apertures in the front wall of the pilot beam.
The constructions just described permit the pilot to be easily and quickly applied to or removed from the pilot beam, and likewise permit said pilot to be vertically adjusted upon said beam so as to regulate the distance between the base of the pilot and the tops of t-he track rails.
The lugs 25 which occupy the recesses 26 in the brackets 27 tend to remove all shearing strains impressed upon the bolts which fasten the pilot to the pilot beam and likewise said lugs will serve to hold the pilot in proper position on the beam even though one or two of the attaching bolts become detached.
Suitable bars 31 extend downwardly and forwardly from the central portion of the pilot beam, the lower forward ends of said bars being secured in any suitable manner to the connected inner ends of base members 13. These bars serve as braces for the central pyramidal portion of the pilot in addition to serving .as supports which imite with the bolts 29 in maintaining the entire pilot factured, meets all of the requirements of the interstate commerce laws respecting locomotive pilots, performs the functions of an ordinary pilot while the engine is in road service, and likewise serves `as a switch engine pilot while the engine to which it is applied is used in switching service.
1t will be readily understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved pilot can be made and substituted for those herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scopeof which is set forth in the appended claims.
l claim:
1. The herein described locomotive pilot comprising a substantially pyramidal central portion, a pair of straight side portions, and foot boards on said side portions.
2. The herein described locomotive pilot comprising a pair of substantially straight side portions, foot boards positioned thereupon, and a substantially pyramidal middle portion arranged between said straight side portions, the lower portion of which middle portion projects a substantial distance in front of the straight side portions.
8. The herein described locomotive pilot comprising a pair of side members which are substantially L-shape in cross section, foot boards positioned on the horizontal legs of said side members, and a substantially pyramidal central member arranged between the side members and the foot boards thereon.

The herein described locomotive pilot comprising a pair of vertically disposed skeleton side members, base members projecting forwardly from the lower portions of said side members, foot boards on said base members, and a pyramidal shaped skeleton central member arranged between the side members and the foot boards, a portion of which central member projects a substantial distance in front of the side members and foot boards.

The herein described locomotive pilot comprising a pair of vertically disposed side members, foot boards projecting forwardly from the lower portions of said side members, a substantially pyramidal central portion arranged between said side members and foot boards, and the lower portion of which pyramidal central member projects a substantial distance in front of the foot boards on the side members. l
7 The herein described locomotive pilot comprising a pair of vertically disposed side members, each of Which includes top and bottom rails, and a series of vertically disposed slats, foot boards'carried by and projecting forwardly from said side members, and a substantially pyramidal central member including a top rail, a pair of inclined base rails and a series of inclined slats oonnecting said top rail and inclined base rails.
8. The combination with a locomotive pilot beam, of brackets fixed to and depending from said beam, a locomotive pilot co-mprising a pair of substantially vertical side portions which .are adjustably secured to said beam and brackets, Jfoot boards projecting forwardly from saidside members, and
a substantially pyramidal central member arranged between said side members and the foot boards carried thereby.
9. The herein described locomotive pilot comprising a pair of vertically disposed side members, foot boards Xed to and projecting forwardly from the lower portions of said side members, toe boards on said side members to therear of said foot boards, and a substantially pyramidal central member arranged between said side members and the foot and toe boards thereon.
