To all whom it may concern:

'Be it known that I, XVILLIAM S. MULLER, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Cedar Rapids, in the county of Linn and State-of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Piano-Seats and Music-Cabinets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to combined piano seats and music cabinets and has for its object the production of a piano seat and cabinet of economical construction and increased capacity, wherein the music is read ily accessible to the performer without the necessity of leaving the seat.

A further object of this invention is the production of a piano seat and music cabinet provided with trays of very thin metal of peculiar construction whereby a greater number of sheets of music may be stored therein.

ith these objects in view, theinvention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,

Fig. 2 is a similar view to Fig. 1 excepting the seat being raised and the doors open for exhibiting the interior thereof, one of the trays being withdrawn and resting against one of the doors.

Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the device showing the arrangement of the slides having one of the trays arranged thereon within the same.

Like reference characters denote similar parts throughout the several views of the drawings and reference being had to the same, 1 denotes the piano seat supported by the four posts or legs 2 and arranged at the rear thereof and supported between the rear legs 2 is the upper rail 3 and to which rail the seat 1 is secured at one side edge thereof by the hinges or other connections 6 and arranged adjacent the lower end of the legs 2 is the bottom rail at and mounted between the rails 3 and at and the rear legs 2 is the panel 5. Arranged at the ends of the seat 1 and at the upper portion of the legs is the top rail 7 and also adjacent the lower ends of the legs 2 is the complement rail 8 and between the rails 7 and 8 is also mounted an end panel 9. At the upper front portion of the seat 1 and extending between the front legs 2 is the upper rail 10 corresponding with the rail 3 at the rear of the seat and also arranged adjacent the bottom of the front legs 2 is the bottom front rail 11 corresponding with the rear lower rail 4. Arranged between the upper rail 10 and'the lower rail 11 at the front of the seat 1 are the door frames 12provided with the panels 13 having arranged thereon the harps 13 or any other musical design. The. doors 12 are each secured to the respective contiguous legs 2 through the medium of the hinges 14, the doors 12 being also provided with theknobs 0r handles 15 for opening and closing the same.

Arranged within the seat 1 and in a plane with the upperedges of the bottom rails 4,

'8 and 11 is the bottom 16 and above which bottom 16 adjacent the upper, portion of the seat is arranged a s jlpplemental bottom 17, the space betweent e'bottom 1'6 andthe supplemental bottom 17 providing a compartment 19 for the current music, the space between the supplemental bottom 17 and the seat 1 providing an auxiliary compartment for the reception of the music after the playing of the same.

Arranged within the compartment 19 at the front and rear of the center portion thereof are vertical strips 21. Upon the inner sides of said vertical strips and the inner sides of the ends of the seat frame, are

parallel horizontal strips or slides for sup porting a plurality of trays 25 adapted to rest and slide thereon.

These trays are formed of sheet metal for economizing space and each tray is provided with an upwardly extending rear flange 26 to form a follower for the sheets of music, an upwardly extending side flange 27 obviating the necessity for a solid vertical partition at 21, and a depending flange 28' and panels forming parts of my invention are secured together by dove tailing or rabbeting or any other suitable manner for securing the parts together which oints are illustrated at 29 in Fig. 2 of the drawing, and which figure also shows the music 30 arranged upon the trays 25 within the compartment 19 and also the music 31 as placed in the auxiliary compartment 20.

My combined piano seat and music cabinet may be constructed of any material suitable for the same and may be ornamented in any desirable manner. For practical use the performer sits upon the seat 1 while in the act of playing and should it be desired to change to another sheet of music all that is required is to simply rise, open one of the doors l2 withdraw the proper tray 25 having a number of sheets of music arranged thereon in either classified or alphabetical order and after withdrawing the desired sheet of music the one played may be deposited in the auxiliary receptacle 20 by the raising of the seat 1 after which operation the seat may be lowered to its closed position and the playing resumed. It is, therefore, cle rly obvious that by my invention the necessity for the performer leaving his seat in order to secure another sheet for playing is wholly obviated, my device being also an ornament of furniture for parlor use as well as for the purpose for which the same is designed.

while I have shown the preferred form of my invention, I hereby reserve the right to make such variations and alterations therein as I may deem expedient and which do not depart from the spirit of this invention or conflict with the scope of the claim.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A combined piano seat and music cabinet comprising a main body provided with a central compartment having vertical strips at the center of the front and rear thereof, parallel horizontal supports connecting the strips, similar parallel, horizontal supports secured to the inner sides of the ends of the compartment, and trays of thin solid material slidably supported on said horizontal strips, said trays having vertical upwardly extending flanges at their inner ends, downwardly extending flanges at their outer or front ends and upwardly extending flanges on their sides which are located at the center of the compartment.
