Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 20, 1917.
Application filed February 25, 1916. Serial No. 80,470.
.with a pointer and a removable calendar' leaf, by which a calendar covering any month of any year may be produced.
A further object of the invention is to provide a calendar having a compartment to receive. a current removable calendar leaf or sheet and another compartment to re ceive leaves or sheets of back periods for future reference, together with means for indicating upon the sheet. in a manner visible through thcface plate, memoranda pertaining to accounts, etc, whereby an accurate record may be kept of all household or other expenditures during the current month, the totals calculated at the end of the month, and a record kept of all transactions of such character from mouth to month in a ready and cmivenient manner.
' A still further object of the invention is to provide a calendar which. with the use of removable and interchangeable sheets, is adapted for perpetual use. which may also be employed as an advertising medium, if desired.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a front view of a memorandum calendar constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal transverse section on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a face view of one of the calendar sheets with its backing detached.
Fig. 5 is a view of the sheet in an outspread or unfolded condition.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a frame of suitable form and construction and made of any suitable material. In the present instance the frame is shown as being of oblong rectangular form, and provided at its upper portion with a calendar casing 2, below which is a space or panel 3 in which may be printed or otherwise exposed directions for using the calendar, etc. If desired, a space 4 may be arranged below the space 3 to receive a picture, mirror or other suitable pictorial or ornamental matter or article of utility. Below this space at may be provided a space 5 to receive advertising or other matter.
The 'asing 2 comprises a front or face plate (3. a back or rear wall 7, side alls 8, and a bottom wall 9, said casing being open at the top and subdivided by a transverse partition l0 into a front chamber or compartment 11 and a rear chamber or compartment 12. The back 7 is preferably provided with a short upward extension having an opening 13 formed therein, whereby the device may be supported upon a wall from a nail or other suitable hanger.
The front or face plate 6 is provided with a central panel or dial portion 14, which is of circular form. and has arranged therein a pivoted dial or pointer 15, which is adapted to sweep around the surface thereof. This dial or pointer adapted for cooperation with a circular space or field 16 surrounding the dial and provided with radial divisions corresponding in number to the number of days in a long month. the numbers fro'ir to 31 inclusive, being-arranged in regular and consecutive order within the divisions of said space and around the circumference of the dial. Upon the dial, or some other suitable portion of the faceplate, appears a table. of the months of the year. together with a statement of the number of days in each month of an ordinary year. The hand 15 is intended to be adjusted from day to day into registry with the day numeral of the current month, which is designed to appear upon a removable calendar sheet or leaf and to be exposed through an observation slot or opening 17 in the face plate. At a suitable point upon the face plate is a holder 18 for a pencil, pen or like writing instrument, for the convenience of the user in making memoranda, as hereinafter' fully described.
Formed within the face plate 6 concentrically with relation to each other and to the space 16, are other inner and outer annular spaces 19 and 20 provided with radial divisions coinciding with the radial divisions of the month numeral spaces, said di- -visions being cut out in the form of slots or openings, as shown. At a point above the dial and annular spaces above mentioned, the face plate is also provided with a transverse series of slots or openings 21, nine in number in the present instance, above which at the top of the face plate, are numerals designating certain values or indications, the numerals being arranged above and in alincment with the slots 21 and consisting in the present instance of the numerals 1, 2, 3, l, 5. 10, 15, 20 and 25, which, for convenience of illustration and description, may represent certain monetary values, as cents or fr: ctions of a dollar. Above this the face plate may be provided with a linger recess 22 for the purpose of exposing the upper edge of the calendar and memorandum sheet and its backing.
The calendar and memorandum sheet 23 is designed to have its active portion exposed through the slots in the face plate so as to indicate matter which may be Written or printed thereon, and at the same time to permit matter to be Written or impressed thereon by means of a pencil or other instrument inserted and brought into contact therewith'through the aforesaid slots in the face plate. Each sheet is preferably of double the dimensions of the face plate and is folded, to provide leaves 241: and 25, formed by folding the sheet along a central transverse line upon itself. This sheet is preferably used in connection with a backing 26, composed of cardboard or other suitably still material, Which is disposed between the leaves of the sheet, the free edges of which are held in proper position by a clip or other fastening 27. By this arrangement the leaf 24 first be exposed and used, and the sheet then reversed and the leaf 25 used, and if desired theopposite surface of the sheet may be employed in like manner, thus giving from 2 to t calendar leaves or pages upon each sheet, each designed to represent and to he used during the current month period of a year.
It will be evident that when a sheet is arranged in position for use, with the current month and year marked thereon so as to be visible through the slot 17, a calendar for the current month is produced, and that the days during this period may be indicated by adjusting the pointer 15. At the end of this months period, another leaf may he brought into position with the new month marked thereon, and after one sheet has been used it may be detached from the backing and another employed in its place, and the used sheet transferred from the front compartment 11 to the back compartment 12 in which it may be stored with other used leaves for future reference.
The object of providing the slots in the face of the calendar is to enable data to be marked upon the current. calendar leaf for the purpom of keeping a record of financial or other transactions and it will be understood that through the slots 19 in line with any of the day numerals matter may be marked upon the leaf 24 indicating an 0bligation which should be met on that day and through the registering slot 20 the lent dots under the numeral 1 indicating can those underthe numeral 5 five cents, an
those under the numeral 25' twenty-five cents each, as will be readily understood, and at the end of the month period these items may be totalized and the totals set down at the bottom of the exposed spaces, so that at the end of the month thetotils of obligations and expenditures may be readily and conveniently foundv and pro 1 erly indicated upon'the sheet, so that't e record, which may be preserve d forfnturo use, of his househbuld or othencxpens'es for the period of any month of a current year. After each sheet is used the sheets w'illjbe transferred to the rear compartment 12,30": that a record of all the accounts, itemized B by day, may be kept for reference at any 'future time.
Itwill thus be seen that the invention ro;
vides a calendar which embodies indicating means adapted for use in connection. with removable sheets to provide a perpetual *cal endar, and which is also adapted for memorandum purposes in the ready and convenient manner set forth, whereby an article of this character ofi maximum value is produced.
