LOUIS R. KRUGER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DRAWING-BOARD ATTACI'IIIIENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2%, 1917.
Application filed March 18, 1914. Serial No. 825,722.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Louis B. KRUGER, a citizen of Switzerland, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Drawing-Board Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for use by draftsmen in supporting a drawing board upon a table or desk.
Ordinarily, the drawing boards usechby draftsmen are mounted upon the supporting table or desk so that their upper surfaces, to which the drawing paper is attached, are horizontal. In using a board thus arranged, it is necessary for the draftsman to assume a bodily position which is cramped and uncomfortable. It is my purpose to provide a supporting device which is adapted to set the drawing board in any desired angle to the desk top and maintain the same effectively therein, so as to accommodate the board to the different positions which the user may desire to assume while at work in order to be comfortable and able to work with case.
A further object of the invention is to provide a supporter of the character set forth which is constructed in such a manner that it may be operated readily to adjust the board to the desired angle, and which is extremely simple in construction so as to be light and durable, yet sufliciently strong for the purpose, and so that it may be manufactured at a small cost.
The invention consistsin the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a perspective View of the device in use for supporting a drawing board upon a. desk;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the same;
Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of one of the supporting members on line 33 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional View through one of the supporting members on line 4% of Fig. 2;
Fig. is a similar sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 6 is a detail side elevation of one of the securing pins; and
Fig. 'Z' is a detail perspective view of one of the attaching plates.
In the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the drawing board which is adapted to be arnnged at a vertical angle tothe desk 2 with its lower edge resting upon the same and its upper edge supported in spaced relation to the desk by means of a pair of supporting members, each of said members being disposed adjacent to one end of the board.
Each supporting member includes a base plate 3 which is adapted to be secured detach ably to the desk by means of the screws 4i, and which is provided medially with an upwardly bulging, apertured portion 5 forming a socket for the reception of the ball 6 provided upon the lower end of a pin 7. The pin 7 and the base plate are preferably constructed of metal, such as steel or the like, and the former is engaged securely within a fiber sleeve 8, which latter extends into the lower end of the tubular telescopic section 9 of the supporting member and is provided with a knurled flange 10 upon its lower end for engagement with the said end of the member 9. Manifestly the sleeve 8 together with the pin 7 can be removed from the section 9, to permit the supporting members to be removed from the table when desired. For this purpose .the board is also detachably connected with the supporting members at their upper ends in the manner to be hereinafter described. The uppermost telescopic section 11 of the supporting memher, which is slidably engaged within the companion section 9, is provided with a plurality of longitudinally spaced openings 12 which are adapted to aline with the longitudinally spaced openings 18 of the section 9. A locking pin 14: is adapted to be engaged within one set of registering openings of both sections for the purpose of securing the sections against relative longitudinal movement and is provided with an annular head 15 by which it may be grasped when manipulating the same. The hollow boss 16 of an attaching plate 17 detachably receives the upper end of the section 11 and is provided marginally with a plurality of upwardly projecting teeth 18 for engagement within the under face of the drawing board 1. By reason of this construction, it will be noted that the board can be instantaneously separated from the vertical supports, when it desired to work with the board lying substantially flat upon the desk.
Owing to the fact that the lower end of the lowermost telescopic section of each sup porting member is connected with the desk by means of a universal joint and that both the telescopic sections are adapted to be adjusted relatively and secured detachably in adjusted position the drawing board may be set at any desired angle to the upper surface of the desk top by proper manipulation of both supporting members. The drawing board may thus be positioned so as to suit the draftsnian using the same and will permit him to work comfortably with a minimum amount of exertion in reaching the different parts of the drawing sheet mounted thereon.
What is claimed is:
In a drawing board attachment, the combination with a base, of a supporting rod comprising hollow telescopic sections, providing means for adjusting the length of said rod a universal member mounted upon the base and provided with a slip connection with the lowermost section of the rod, and an attaching plate'secured to the underside of the board and having a. hollow boss depending centrally therefrom to provide a' slip connection between the uppermost section of the said rod and the plate, whereby the telescopic rod may be removed from the board and base.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
