IMPROVEMENT IN BALE-TIES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.121,988, dated December 19, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FLOYD G. BRowN, of Brenham, in the county of Washington and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Buckle; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved buckle. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same taken on the line as 0:, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a face view of the plate from. which my buckle is made.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to a new buckle or tie for holding the ends of the bands of cotton-bales; and consists in forming the same with two arms or ends, both of which are doubled, and in forming thereby a hole in the tie for receiving one end of the band. The object of the invention is chiefly to prevent the loss of the buckle from the band while the latter is loose, and also to facilitate the fastening of the band to the bale.

A in the drawingrepresents my improved buckle or tie. It is made of sheet metal or equivalent material, of the form shown in Fig. 3-that is to say, it is made of rectangular form, with two nearly-square apertures, f g, near the ends and with a transverse slot, h, in the middle. The device thus formed shows two bars, a a, at each end, connected by bars 0 c with two middle bars, I) b, on either side of slot h. Each bar a has a hook, d, with slanting edge, while an arm, 6, projects toward said hook from each bar 1). Thus, clefts 0 0 are formed between the hooks d and arms 0 to admit of the introduction of the baletie or band. The buckle is formed from this plate by doubling the same in line with the slot h, so that it will appear as in Fig. 1. One end of the band B, after being bent, is fitted through the aperture It, so as to be held between the bars b b, as shown. The band is then laid around the bale to be bound and all the slack of the band issecured, when the operator makes fast the outer end of the band .by doubling all the surplus of same, so that it can be hooked over the bars a. The slope on the hooks d facilitates the application of the band over the bars a.

This tie will be absolutely secure and prevent the spontaneous Working loose of the band under all circumstances, except by breakage.

Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The bale-tie buckle herein described, consisting of the plate A provided with the openingsf g, clefts 0 o, and sloth, constructed and arranged to operate, substantially as specified.
