Be it known that I, PATRICK J. ROGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ilion, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scaffold- Brackets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in scaffold brackets and the principal object of the invention is to provide a folding bracket adapted to bereadily attached to structures upon which scaolds are to be used.
Another object of the invention is to provide a bracket which may be readily released in order that the position thereof may be changed.
A further object of the invention is to provide a bracket which -may be readily.-
folded to a compact bundle so as to occupy a minimum amount of space when being transported.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the. novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view illust-rating this improved bracket in use.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view illustrating the bracket in its folded position.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4-4 of Fig. l, and
Fig. 5 isa sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates the supporting arm of the bracket consisting of an angle bar provided at one end with an angularly extending flange 2. This flange is bifurcated as at 3 to receive the rod of the clamping hook which will be more fully hereinafter described. Formed.
at the end of the supporting arm 1 opposite the flange 2 and in the underside of the vertical leg of said supporting arm is a notch 4 forming a shoulder 5 against which the bracing arm which will more fully hereinafter described abuts.
The bracing arm above referred to is designated by the numeral 6 and comprises an angle bar having the forward end of its flange cut away as at 7 to form a forward extending tooth 8 on the vertical ange which engages against the shoulder 5 on-the supporting arm 1. The rear end of the vertical flange of the bracing'arm is inclined as at 9 so that the same when in use will extend parallel with the vertical support against which it engages.
Pivotally connected at 10 to the outer end of the supporting arm 1 is a link 11 provided in its opposite end with a slot 12 through which the rivets 13 carried bythe bracing arm 6 is slidable. It will thus be seen that a pivotally slidable vconnection is formed between the arms 1 and 6 thereby permitting the arm 6 to swing into the position shown in Fig. 3 when the device is folded. Connected between the rear ends of the supporting and brace arms is a vertical leg designated generally by the numeral 14 consisting of a long link 15 which is pivoted as at 16 to the free end of the brace arm 6 and a short link 17 which is pivoted as at 18 to the rear end of thev supporting arm 1. These links are pivotally connected together at 19 and are adapted to fold as shown in Fig. 3 when the device-is in its collapsed position. n
In order to provide a supporting means to hold the bracket in various adjusted positions on the structure in connection with which it is used, a suitable lever 20 is pivotally mounted as at 21 'to the vertical web of the supporting bar 1 and is provided with an angular extension 22 to which is pivotally connected as at 23 the rearwardly extending rod 24. This rod extends through the bifurcated portion 3 of the flange 2 and beyond the rear end of the suppor'ting arm 1 and is provided at its rear terminal with the hook 25 formed with the tooth 26 which isA adapted to engage behind a vertically extending column or supporting structure of the building on which the deviceis used. As shown in 'the drawings it will be noted that the rod 24 is provided with a plurality of openings for the reception of the pivot pin 23 so as to allow the device to be used where the studding varies in thickness.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that in use the device is assembled in the manner shown in Fig. 1, by swinging the arm 6 downwardly and engaging the tooth 8 in the notch 4 and against the shoulder 5. When in this position it will be seen that the links l5 and 17 will be in longitudinal alinement thereby forming a jointed arm 14 which will hold the arms l and 6 in the position shown. Vhen in this position, it will be seen that the rod 24 may be positioned behind the vertical support and upon moving the lever 2O into the p0- sition shown in Fig. 1, the rod will be thrown outwardly thereby causing the hook 25 to frictionally engage the support and hold the bracket in place. It will also be noted that the end of the handle will engage against the rod and tend to prevent the same from moving out of proper position as illustrated in Fig. 5.
`While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred e1nbodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be niade in the cornbination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is l.' A scaffold bracket comprising a supporting arm, a vertical downwardly entending iiange formed at one side edge of the supporting arm, the lower edge of said flange being provided with a notch adjacent its outer end, a link pivotally connected to the outer face of the downturned Harige, a brace arin, an upwardly extending vertical iiange formed on one side edge of the brace arm, the outer end of the vertical flange of the brace arm being provided with a longitudinal slot, a pivot pin extending through the slot and through the link to pivotally connect the inner face of the vertical fiange of the brace arm to the link, the eXtreme outer end of the vertical iiange of the brace arin being beveled to 5t into the notch in the supporting arin when the device is in operative position, a relatively long link pivoted to the brace arm adjacent its inner end, a relatively short link pivoted to the end of the long link and adjacent the inner end of the supporting arm, said link when in extended position forming a brace to hold the supporting and brace arms in extended position, an outturned guide flange formed on the vertical flange of the supporting arm and a clamp attached to the supporting arin and slidable through the last mentioned guide flange to secure the device to the side of a vertical support.
2. ln a scaffold bracket, the combination with a horizontal supporting arm and a diagonal brace arm, said arms being held in foldable position, of a laterally extending ear formed at the inner end of the horizontal supporting arm, said ear having a slot extending thereinto from one side edge, a lever pivotally connected to the supporting arm, a rod slidable through the slot, a lateral extension on the lever, a pivot connecting one end of the rod with the lateral extension whereby movement of 'the lever will move the rod longitudinally and a hook at the end of the rod opposite that which is connected to the extension on the lever, said hook being adapted to engage around a vertical support whereby when the lever is actuated the bracket will be secured to the support.
