MARY AMELIA POTVIN, or DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OFONEHALF TO EUGENE n. ROBB, or DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
COMBINED TAG AND TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 20, 1917.
Application filed May 20, 1916. Serial No. 98,819.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY AMELIA Por- VIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Tags and Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends an improved novelty and has as its primary object to provide a device of this character which may be employed as a symbolical identifying tag to be sold to the purchaser with a View to raising funds for charitable or other purposes and which will be adapted to provide a toy after having served its purpose as a tag.
The invention has as a further object to provide a device of this character employing a figure representing the human hand, which figure may be used as a tag to symbolize a helping hand for the purposes above mentioned and wherein the said figure will be provided with an elastic bouncing cord to form a toy with the cord adapted to return the figure toward the hand of the operator when the figure is struck by the hand.
And a still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be of such simple character that it may be easily manufactured and placed upon the market.
Other and incidental objects will appear as the description proceeds and in the drawing wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention and wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of myimproved device, showing the use of a padded figure in the form of a human hand, which figure is provided with a bouncing cord;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view more particularly showing the construction of the figure;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 and illustrating the use of a flat figure with the bouncing cord attached thereto; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the cord attached to the figure to provide a tag. In carrying out the invention I employ a figure 10 preferably of a form to represent the human hand. This figure may, as more particularly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings be constructed of mating top and bottom cloth sections between which is interposed a suitable filling or padding 11 or may be constructed from a fiat piece of cardboard as shown at 15 in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings, it being understood that I do not wish to limit myself in this regard since the said figure may be formed of wood, rubber, metal, or any other suitable material and may be hollow. if desired. Mounted upon the back of the figure at a point substantially midway the ends thereof is a suitable loop or eye 12, and connected to the wrist portion of the said figure is a similar loop or eye 14:. Associated with the figure, is a cord 13 which may be of any approved length and is preferably formed of elastic. This cord, when the device is to be used as a tag, is connected at its extremities with the loop 14: with the said cord forming a 100 for attaching the tag to the clothing of the wearer. As will now be seen, by employing the representation of a hand, the device may be designated to symbolize a charitable or helping hand to be sold as a tag identifying the purchaser as having extended a helping hand to the raising of a particular fund for charitable or other purposes. Such tags are usually worn on a particular designated day and the present invention therefore contemplates that the tag may be used as a toy after such day has passed. To accomplish this end, the cord 13 is detached from the eye ll and is connected at one extremity to the eye 12. The cord 13 will then provide a bouncing cord which may be grasped at its free extremity in a hand of the operator when the figure 10. may then be struck to cause the said figure to bounce away from the hand to be returned by the said cord. I thus provide a toy which will be found very amusing for children or others, and in this connection, it will, of course, be understood that the attractiveness of the toy may be easily governed by the character of figure employed. In this way, an inducement may beoffered to purchase the device as a tag in View of its desirability to be subsequently used as a toy.
It will, therefore, be seen, that I provide a very simple and eflicient construction for the purpose set forth and wherein but a single cord is employed Which not only forms an attaching loop When the device is used as a tag but is also adapted to provide bouncing cord When the device is used as a toy.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patout is:
1. A device of the character described including a tag comprising a figure formed to represent a human hand and adapted to be Worn for identifying purposes, and an elastic cord forming an attaching loop for the tag and adapted for connection to said figuie whereby to provide a toy.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a symbolic figure adapted to be Worn for iden tifying purposes and having a cord connected thereto to provide a tag With the said cord forming an attaching loop for the tag and adapted to provide an element for bouncing the figure whereby to produce a toy.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
