LAND-MARKER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, CHARLES A. HANSON and ALBERT L. Hanson, citizens of the United States, residing at Munising, in the county of Alger and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Land-Marker, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to an improved land marker having novel characteristics and advantages. Among the objects of our invention is the provision of a land marker which is indestructible so that in case of fires a re-survey will not be necessary, while at the same time not being of excessive weight or costliness. An important object of our invention is the provision of a novel base member for such a land marker including a novel raised portion disposed on a median line through the base member, whereby the marker is prevented from being turned unless it is taken up intentionally from its location. It is a further object of our invention to provide a novel cap member for such a land marker which may be readily marked and which has direction indicating designations on the cap member there being a predetermined relation of such designating direction mark to the raised portion on the base member. It is further our object to provide quarter designating markings on the cap member of suitable character. Another object of our invention is the provision of a novel construction whereby effectively to secure the base member to the main stem of the marker to insure the permanence of the construction.

o attain the objects of our invention by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section on line 11 of Fig. 3; Fig. 2 is a top plan of the cap member; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line 33 of Fig. 1 looking toward the base; and Fig. 1 is a side view of the base member.

Like characters of reference designate like parts throughout the several views.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, we provide an indestructible hollow stem 1, of galvanized pipe. The lower portion 3 of stem 1 is embedded in a cast base member 2. Portion 3 of stem 1 is provided with a converging annular flange 8 which is adapted to permanently secure the stem 1 to the base 2. It will be observed further that Specification of Iietters Patent.

portion 9 of base 2 extends to a height within the stem parallel with the opposite raised portions 4, on base 2, as shown in Fig. 1. Raised portions 4- are disposed on a median line of base 2, and are very important inasmuch as they prevent turning accidentally of the land marker. Without such means for obviating accidental shifting of the marker its usefulness is greatly impaired. Secured to the top of stem 1 I provide a novel brass and copper cap member 5, having a hollow portion 6 engaging over the upper portion of stem 1, and secured thereto by a suitable metal fastening member 7, to insure the permanence of the marking member. Cap member 5 is provided with novel designating markings 10 consisting of an arrow, four lines at right angles one of which terminates in the arrow, and an inner circle from which the four lines radiate, whereby to divide the cap member into quarters. Suitable land marking designations differing in character for each individual marker may readily be stamped on the respective quarter portions set ofl by theabove described designation markings, inasmuch as the cap member is of brass. The construction disclosed makes it possible to provide land markers of light weight, which may be readily transported; insures their permanence and obviates re-surveys in the event of fires; and prevents the accidental displacement of the land marker which would destroy its usefulness. Its operation is apparent from the accompanying drawings, the base being embedded in the earth at the corner of a section, the projection or raised portions at preventing its turning. It is disposed with the arrow on the cap member pointing toward the north. In consequence the section markings on the four quarters set oii by the lines at right angles to each other are properly disposed to designate the respective sections. The cap member being of brass suitable section markings as desired are readily inscribed by means of suitable stamping dies, the designation markings indicated by 10 on Fig. 2 only being claimed as our invention. The marking being disposed on top of the cap member in an approximately horizontal po sition and not vertically, are readily examined by the surveyor or cruiser or forester.

What we claim is:

1. An indestructible land marker of light weight adapted to be readily transported by hand, comprising a fiat base flanges on its upper portion, a tubular metal stem having bent ends'embedded-in*the base, and acap member having direction markings on its top riveted over the metal stem.

2. A light, easily-transported and Permanent land marker comprising a metal cap bearing direction markings, a light tubular metal stem bearing the metal cap, and a fiat base member adapted to becompletely concealed beneath the surface of the ground and having HPWHFClly projecting flanges to vanized pipe stem'over Whichthe cap memher is riveted, the pipe member terminating in a converging annu ar flange, a broad base member in wv hidhthe-aforesaidfiange is em bedded, the base member having opposite projections normally concealed beneath the surface of the ground and adapted to hold the marker against accidental displacement and to necessitate unearthing the base member to permit of turning the landmarker, whereby to prevent tampering with :or disturbance of 'the 'landmarker Without the ileaving of vevidences of such disturbance.
